This week's challenge is.... Metal Dry Embossing.

Here is my creation:
Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

I created this for the Trash to Treasure challenge for the JULYVSN. I used a (clean) disposable aluminum pie plate. See below for a variation using plain old aluminum foil.

Stamp with black ink or staz-on on one side of a piece of the pie plate. Regular household scissors work well to cut it. Black ink will smear a little but it doesn't matter since the stamped side is actually the back.
Set the stamped foil on a cushy mouse pad or a piece of fun foam with the stamped side up. Using a stylus for paper dry embossing (or a ball point pen), trace over the major lines of the stamp. You can press firmly for deep lines and lightly for more faint lines. Flip your work over to check for any missed lines.

Once you have it all embossed, flip it over and GENTLY run your fingers over the piece. This will push a little bit of the foil back down and allow the embossed lines to 'pop' more. You can also run the stylus gently around both sides of each embossed line to further define it.

At this point, you can use regular scissors to cut around the image as desired and use on your card. You can also use Sharpie markers to color the image if desired.

If you don't have a disposable tray/pie plate lying around, you can also do this method with a sheet of heavy duty aluminum foil from the kitchen drawer. I took a sheet and folded it until I had four layers. You might want to spread a thin layer of ordinary glue in between the layers to keep it together when you cut it out (ask me how I know this one! ). Amy (my 7 yo DD) and I made one with the pumpkin from Fall Whimsy this way and it turned out pretty cute, if I do say so myself! I will load it later today.

Questions? Suggestions? please post them here.
I look forward to seeing all of your creations!

That is exactly what the children in Vacation Bible School did last week at my church (except that they drew instead of stamped).

Here is mine. My image was a bit busy, so I tinted the metal with StazOn.

Sounds great! What do you use to cut out the metal? Would you use tin snips, or your craft scissors? I get a little nervous about damaging them, just curious what everyone else does... Thanks for the challenge!!!!!

Default embossing metal

I am way too tired to start this challenge tonight, but when I saw Beth's card Saturday night using the embossed metal, it reminded me of some projects I did in high school art class. I loved doing it at the time, and now FINALLY something I learned in high school will come in handy.
I have attached them, because I thought you all might like to see some ancient artifacts!

Wow Becky-great artifacts! I haven't had a chance to check the challenge until now. I guess I'm going to have to root through the kitchen to find something aluminum. May be tomorrow before I can post.

Here is one Amy and I created using 4 layers of aluminum foil. This was easier for her to emboss than the pie plate. Didn't she do a great job??

Here is my card for the challenge.. I had some copper sheeting that i bought for another craft project several years ago and thought I could use it. It cut very easy with my sissors and I could even punch holes in it with my punch. I see lots more possibilities with it. I did end up leaving the leaf stamped side out as it was prettier and the black didnt wipe off as I was embossing. This card is so neat in person. The scan does not show up the black stamped leaf. I played around with the weaving as I needed something on the right side along with the the copper strip. Poo, I also forgot to add copper paper to my list of paper on the card recipe. Teal paper was about the only color I could see going with the copper color. It was fun to work with the metal,,, thanks for the challenge and for getting me to use my old craft stuff. I am finding all sorts of stuff. LOL

I used a disposable pizza pan to create the metal pieces of the gumball machine. I thought it came out quite cute!

That was fun! I didn't have a foil pie plate and didn't really want to do the foil, so in looking around my kitchen, I grabbed an empty pop can, cut it up and tried it. I like the results. I also used my piercing tool for the center of the flower. It is not something I would do every day, but I am pleased with the results.

Take a look:

I can't get over all the incredible cards there are here. I've got to cut back a bit on the recycling because I know I got rid of a pie plate a while ago! Going to scrounge around for something to do this with...

Thumbs up TLC21

Finally got to play this week. Great challenge Beth. I kinda cheated by using embossing foils that I purchased some time ago. They called out to my love of copper. Here is my contribution. Please show Amy I had to copy her idea with the brads in the corner. Just loved hers

Hi Beth, I finally got to make my metal dry embossing card. I used a pop can. Easy to cut with regular scissors and not too sharp. I also smeard my flower and leaf with stazon ink using Leslie's favorite tool.... TP! Thanks again for a fun technique. Nancy

Okay I'm sliding in at the last minute here but after seeing all the neat ideas from everyone I just had to give it a try.
I started out with a mixed nut can bottom which my husband helped me tear apart and it wouldn't emboss, to heavy! So I settled for a pie pan bottom and DH wants to know if I'm going to use them all up. He likes to cook and always saves a few. I don't think he has much to worry about, it won't be an everyday thing for sure, but I did try it!

Default Better late than never???

I've been having trouble with my camera or my computer or the combination of both, so I haven't been posting. But I'm still creating! I think this picture came out okay.

I first saw metal embossing at a CTMH party over 2 years ago. (My neighbor, who is one of my best customers, got railroaded into hosting, so I went for moral support only.) SU had nothing like it (and they still don't!) so I bought it and have felt like a traitor ever since! Would you know, this is the first time I've used it since the day I got it? Thanks for giving me the freedom!!! Enjoy...
