Where do I read about image size and limits?

Ok...I've searched around for a couple days now and I just can't find what I had a few weeks ago. (I know, I know, I should have printed it out). So, now I have to ask this....
Where do I find a thread or instructions on image size limits, etc on posting images to the gallery? I must be pixel dumb. Cuz I just don't know how to figure the math on these.
I had no problem when I was taking photos, cuz I could set the limits when I was taking my pictures. Now, I have a new scanner and I'm not sure what size Dpi to use when scanning. I've used a pretty low setting (100) but my files are still pretty big. Suggestion?
Where's the best place to read about this?
