Good morning everyone. Now that we are home from the cottage, the weather has turned sunny and warm. Murphy's law, I guess.
I am looking forward to Jayne's challenge on Thursday.

Hi, just had an email from DIL, she arrived home last night and her leg still hurts, her stomach is bruised really badly from the heparin injections and she has three hospital appointments.
She is exhausted from the journey from Australia and overslept so was late for work! Not even one day off after all that!

We are enjoying our time with GS, exhausted but fun, a rest day tomorrow as DIL is off.

Woohoo! OK so I tried to breathe in one of my fries(chips) while having fish n chips with my son. But I am OK! No that is not the excitement. Grumpy and sweet pea are getting engaged! Sweet pea was waiting for her relationship with her parents to be better.the father wants sweet pea to marry a Korean man. Sweet pea does NOT like Korean men, she likes grumpy whom is a Canadian mutt. Her father has finally conceded to meet and get to know grumpy! Yeah!

Oh.. Her grandfather thinks grumpy is great!

I am so frustrated! I have been having issues with my fitbit one for over a month. For the past week I have been rebooting and resetting it. Finally gave up. Grumpy was over and it was working like a charm!

Is she Koren? If so seem the older Asian generation was like that, it was tradition . They wanted and it was expectations of their children to marry within their own race. I suppose that's how they kept there race to become superior and not Die out. Basicly like another version of Romeo and Juliette.
We still have many Asians here in Hawaii who parent are like that especially the Dads.

Yes she is Korean. Yes her dad is very much like that. Everyone else likes grumpy. Sweet peas friends love that they get driven around by grumpy on a regular basis.

When grumpy was growing up I told him that if he brought a female friend with him that he was responsible for her around the guys. He knew quits well what the guys could be like if they were drunk.

Whoohoo...that's awesome news Lynn. Congratulations to the happy pair. I have 2 close friends here and one friend's 2 sons have married chinese descent (Australian) ladies. My other friend's 2 daughters have also married Asian descent (Australian) men...Indian and also Chinese. The families sometimes prefer them to marry from within their culture but it is good to have integration. Look at me...I married an Aussie LOL.

I see wedding bells and then Lynn with poppets...exciting time for you all.

Now I have to think about my challenge and stop thinking about engagements.

Jan, your DIL works so hard and really should have been given a day off to recover from the flight..it's a long way from Australia to the UK.

Happy day everyone.

Well ladies it's Thursday again and our dear Ina deserves time out...so here's my challenge for you this week. Don't get too excited now...LOL...

S2S19KK - We are going DIY

Let’s stamp or stencil and make some yummy textured backgrounds using items to be found in your home or hardware/dollar store.

If you would also like to try something different, print onto greaseproof paper.....I think it’s known in the States and Canada as baking, deli or parchment paper.

All you need are paints or inks
A brayer or rolling pin
A gel plate….if you don’t have one, add your texture straight onto your paper after inking up your items or spray directly onto them
Gesso...optional

Have a look around you and see what you can find. Some ideas are...

screws, bubble wrap, loo rolls/paper rolls (they feature everywhere lol), q-tips, egg shells, rubber bands, string/twine, drywall tape, jars, drawer/cupboard lining, a comb, plastic knife/fork, feathers, leaves, teabag, coffee, salt, some of which we used recently in DTGD. Look around you and see what you can find that will give you some texture or pattern.

The technique is fairly easy....3 options....either

  • Ink your plate, add your texture, print it
  • Add your texture directly to your paper...ink it first or spray it
  • Add gesso to your paper....then add your texture/pattern. Then spray it.

Those who know me, know I don’t stop here.....if you want more...read on...

Once you are happy with your BG, cut it up. Yep...go on cut it up, but carefully. Cut it into strips, panels, die cut it and add it to your card, scrapbook LO or add it into your art journal...whatever takes your fancy. If it’s very yummy...leave it as it is and so we can see it.

Here’s some videos that will give you some ideas and which I found useful:

The most important thing is have fun.

Our dear friend, Melissa, has kindly agreed to be sample maker for me this week. Check out the beautiful scrapbook pages she made using this technique in the next post. I will also post my samples separately. Thank you Melissa...your samples are awesome.

Happy day and DIYing ladies...I can't wait to see what you come up with....look around you and just play and have fun.

Here's Melissa's samples...

First sample: MSM's S2S 09.18.19 firehole falls

Supplies: 12 x 12 gel plate, textured white cardstock, assorted acrylic paints, brayer, bubble wrap, child / toddler eating utensil (fork)

This page has TWO textured prints. One was die cut for the title lettering. The second was used for the main paper.

Brayer assorted acrylic paints on 12 x 12 gel plate surface. Lay bubble wrap on gel plate, bubble side down. Remove. Swirl fork tines from child fork to create wavy patterns. I went to town with the fork on the main paper. Notice the bubble wrap circles on the titling, as well as the waves from the fork. Just be certain your fork is blunt! This was a child / toddler fork.

Here's Melissa's 2nd sample.....

Second sample: MSM's S2S 09.18.19 Grand Tetons

Supplies: 12 x 12 gel plate, textured white cardstock, assorted acrylic paints, brayer, bubble wrap, child utensils (fork)

Brayer assorted acrylic paints on 12 x 12 gel plate surface. Lay bubble wrap on gel plate, bubble side down. Remove. Swirl fork tines from child fork to create wavy patterns. Stamp random small images on print to create textured pattern paper look using the 12 x 12 MISTI - due to the texture, you will likely need to stamp images more than once. Colored elements on the stamped print are Copic colored die cuts. Leaves are stacked for dimension and covered in Glossy Accents.

Aren't they awesome? You don't have to make a card. You can use this technique on any project as Melissa has proved.

Also, remember if you use utensils, make sure they are plastic otherwise they could damage your gelli plate. Enjoy

Here's my samples.

Sample 1 are all the sample prints I took. I used a number of items....plastic knife, fork, screws, drywall tape, string, elastic bands, combs, toothbrush, golf ball (yep I did LOL), golf spike repairer (yep its on there), plastic bottle tops, mesh, bubble wrap, wall plugs, etc...did I have fun.

Some of these will be added to other challenges. I also printed on normal CS, greaseproof paper and photo paper. The photo paper was tricky but I still managed a print.

Have fun everyone and thank you for playing.

Jayne - your cards are so lovely! Gorgeous! When I grow up, I want to make mixed media cards like you.

The hardest thing about this technique for me was...IDK...I did my prints on 12 x 12 papers. So, it took a lot of 12 x 12 - I still have a few samples I have to remember to use. And I feel like I need WD-40 on the wheels creaking in my head as I choose colors. LOL. Maybe. IDK. That tells me I need to do this more. Jayne & I both purchases the small circle, triangle & square gelli plates seen in one of the videos she shared. Looks like she used hers, but I have not. So I need to remedy that! It's all about moving out of your comfort zone. I've got to practice.

This was great fun. Bubble wrap? Yes, please. This was the jumbo bubbles! That child's fork, itself, has a story attached. It is a Lego fork from my GREAT nephew's birthday party a few years ago, part of a spoon / fork set that snaps together. It always makes me smile to see it in the utensil drawer. Now it will make me smile to see it on my desk and in my craft tools drawer. Use the back of a spoon to "skip" across the gel plate. Gorgeous.

Thanks Jayne for letting me make samples for your challenge! I only dipped my toes. As Jayne says - the sky's the limit.

Happy Thursday!

Melissa you went out of your comfort zone and you rocked the challenge. What I love is that you’ve shown me that this technique and others that we learnt during DTGD can be used on scrapbook pages. Use your spare panels for tags on pages and cards, or die cut out of them. Don’t throw them away...like the bears they will come in handy.

Thank you for playing and being sample maker. It was such fun. Hugs

Jayne that’s a great challenge and lovely samples from you and Melissa, just got me itching to get messy, I have a drawer full of gelli plate pieces that I occasionally get out and try to use! I don’t very often find a way to use them though but I still put them back in the drawer! LOL

GS has been out to see his other grandma after school, she goes back to Poland on Saturday and has been looking after her other GS as he’s just started school, our son picked him up from the beach and he came running in to give me a cuddle and tell me about his day, it was so lovely to think he missed me.

I played with the Gelli plate tonight. Got a lot of prints. It I think my acrylic paints are too old and paint is too thick! I think I got my Gelli plate about 6 years ago, so that is probably how old my paints are. Anyway, did it. The ones with the golf balls and ones with the flower frog ( I think that is what it is called. ) turned out the best. In the videos, they were using small Gelli plates. Mine is the big one. I do a whole sheet at a time then I can cut it down, using the best parts. . Anyway they are laying around drying.
I will do something with it tomorrow.
I need some prettier colors, like you have, Jayne.

Sharon, I bought 6 tubes of different acrylic paints from our local hardware store for a total of $16...they are cheap but give good coverage and pretty colours. You don’t need expensive paints. I also tried my distress inks but I found the prints better with acrylic paints..maybe because the paint was thicker. Have fun.

I’ll be back later...school run today

Awesome challenge Jayne! Now I need to find my gelli plate. It's been missing for awhile.

Those smalls ones - Jayne & I bought those! I like that you can stamp with them and create....a great background paper to scrap on. I feel like I might have more control over the results. Plus, I really did like the juxtaposition of the warm / cool on the Firehole Falls layout!

Seriously, I thought about cutting up a gelli plate. Thankfully, the thought passed.

I used acrylic paint in the bottles! I'm sure they have varying ages.

I have a tube of the BASIC acrylic paint from Michaels in...you guessed it...John Deere Green. Anyway, I made up that name. I do like that paint. It's not terribly expensive, but you do get a lot. The only reason I have it is to paint a chipboard album for December Daily, about two years ago. It gave GREAT coverage. I have not used that on my gelli plate, yet. They're having a sale on the paint. I might go get a couple more tubes and play around with it. I really like the texture - it's a little thicker than the craft paint in the bottles.

We did DIL's birthday cake in john Deere green and yellow!

I hope to pull out my gelli plate sometime this weekend. I looked through my box of unused pieces, but couldn't find any done on the plate. Still lots of shaving cream pieces that I'm trying to use instead of hoarding!

I can overlook the messy as long as I get the pretty (and smells good too!)
