Thought for August theme

4 August (First Sunday of August) - Friendship Day

Or would you rather

20 August - World Mosquito Day

Thank you! I think I just need some time to get my head on straight. 7 months of mostly isolation has taken it's toll.

I just realised I’m way behind on my S2S challenges. I had missed July’s and now we are in August. Some catching up to do.

I’m in DH’s bad books..or was..I got two speeding tickets in the mail today that I didn’t know I had from July when I went to the PO to mail cards overseas. Gosh they were expensive cards. I’m banned from spending for the rest of the year..oops.

Hey Jan I got your message thanks! How is it in your neck of the woods these days? Here I get out maybe two times a week for thirty minutes each on average. The virus is still out there and everyone acts like it isn't.

Feeling better. Grumpy gave me a project. Grumpy and his friend...hunter..that is a good nickname for him.. So grumpy and hunter are going on a canoe trip through Algonquin park at the end of the month. I think I can boil down a pasta sauce for them which they can hydrate and cook or use as a paste on bannock. Oops bannock. OK so bannock is a flat bread that you can make with minimal ingredients and cook on a rock in the fire. Many backpackers do this

So they are on a canoe trip of 8 days. Every thing they eat..wear or any tool or pot they use will be carried on their backs. So every THING is weighed and they look at how many ounces each thing weighs plus it's size. My son uses old school lye soap to wash him and anything he wears out there. The least impact to the environment the better. Hunter has a fishing license and they can supplement with fish. So yeah no fishing pole.. Just a line with a hook and any available branch. Yes they love it! Yes I did backpacking in my younger days.

I am looking at a recipe for chicken fried rice for them. Freeze dried chicken.. Vegetable soup mix and instant rice. If I can get a packet of soya sauce even better. I put it all in a large freezer bag. They boil water and add it to the bag and then seal while it 'cooks'. I know..we are weird! Lol

Lynn the park looks beautiful, is it the same place he went before! You will have another project when they get back, journalisms pages with all the photos!

How do you boil down a pasta sauce, does it go really thick and then They add water when they cook it? our son bought some dried rations online for the camping trip he went on with the cubs, he also keeps some for emergencies in his pack in case of earth quakes etc!

Im pleased to hear you are getting out even if it is only for a short time, we are isolating ourselves a little as the holidaymakers are here, mainly spanish but also foreigners too, we also have 21 cases in our small town and the town next to us is in lockdown, the police are guarding all motorway exits so no one can go in or leave.
We go shopping and that’s it at the moment, it’s too hot to walk in a mask anyway, we only walked a short way to the shop yesterday and Steve couldn’t get his breathe, I think it’s the humidity!

Lynn you are back..yay. That sounds like serious backpacking your son and his friend are doing. I tried to look at the park but the virtual camera came up dark..maybe it was night lol. You are such a good mum to send them off with their food. It all sounds yummy for camping.

Yep I got two speeding tickets. My second..or third however you look at it in my life. I’m so annoyed with myself. All within 7 minutes. I drove in July to our local PO to mail some cards overseas. There wasn’t a speed camera and must have been a parked vehicle.  They are very creative with their cameras.  When we checked the spot where they took the photo from its past where I go into the shopping centre, so they got me as I was coming up the road and then as I left the car park. I know sometimes it’s hard to get out and you have to put your foot down and why I may have gone up quickly past 50.  We are allowed 5 over...they got me on 6 over going out and going in...mmmmm. I also got 2 demerits on my licence. I won’t do it again. Mailing those cards cost me a lot...including the $500 to make each one lol.

Happy Tuesday. Keep safe and well everyone

Jayne, they should allow for covid distraction. My son got pulled over about two weeks ago. But they were kind and only issued a warning! I'm so grateful. We have so much going on right now that God knew we didn't need one more thing to deal with. I tend to have a heavy foot on the accelerater. Especially when I'm stressed, which lately is everyday! So far no speeding tickets. Years ago I got stopped for going through a stop sign but I told the officer I didn't even slow down because I didn't know it was there! I'm wondering if it was a new sign because he did not ticket me. Theonly thing I had to do was go in and show my driver's license as I didn't have it with me that day!

Wow Kathy, that was a kind officer to not give you a ticket! I can relate, I don't drive well when stressed and I need to talk to myself to keep from speeding. Thank goodness for cruise control.

The park looks beautiful Lynn. If only, there were soft beds here and there! LOL No more sleeping on the hard ground for me. I hope Grumpy & Hunter have a fabulous time.

Jayne, you'll have to wear some lightweight shoes for that heavy foot next time you go to mail something! LOL

Oh they would make a mint with speed cameras these days! Before covid they lowered the speed limit on many streets by 10 kilometers per hour. So what was 50 is now 40. Many are still going the 50!

Jayne you have to push it to get out on the road here. Everyone drives like they own it! No no one let's anyone in. Oh well it is a big city with lots of idiots. I tend to do things at off hours so I don't get stuck with them on the road.

Most of the time here there’s not much traffic here , now it’s awful, tourists trying to park everywhere, the spanish will park on a corner, a crossing, even double park if they go into the bank or shop,
someone once double parked and blocked Steve in, as he came out the shop, he told him to move ,the bloke said he wouldn’t be a minute, Steve said I know you won’t because you’re going to move right now, strangely he quickly moved.

So Algonquin park is a back woods camping park. It is a large area of woods and lakes in the middle of no where. You drive to the parking lot and leave your car. You either enter on foot or by canoe.. That's it. What you bring in you must bring out as in any plastics or cans in your garbage comes with you. If you have to go poo you dig a hole then cover it when you are done. They allow fishing but no hunting. The area can be seen in the art of ' the group of seven'

Yes I have a heavy foot and don’t use my cruise control as the limits vary on different streets and I would be changing it all the time. I will set it for the 50 limits though. It wasn’t an officer who pulls you over as I could have said I was stressed. I know I was rushing around. We have a van here that they park up on the side of the road..usually behind trees/bushes and set the speed camera. I never saw it as it was further down the road. Usually you can see people slowing down and know there’s one or see it as you are approaching. This one was after the entrance to the Car park and I now think I thought what’s that van parked there for. It didn’t look like a normal one. They were very tricky. They got me leaving and 1 km over. That is hard and they should be compassionate. The other I deserved. I was way over 50. I still feel bad about it and on a budget now.

Sorry about your ticket Jayne. It really hurts when it's only one over. I guess that's going by the 'letter of the law'.Well, I've been MIA most of last week, but I am back. This morning, I picked up yesterday's mail. I found Gracie's card in it! What a delightful card, so cheerful and fun. I love that image and all the sparkles, and the expert colouring. Thanks so much.
In the past few days, we have received an abundance of rain, and I am so thankful. My rain gauge says 2.4 inches. It has also taken the temperature down. It was 12 C° this morning. Great for walking.
Lynn, your idea for the August challenge is a great one. Lets make that our challenge, and I will post that .
Jayne, you asked about starting a new challenge thread. I did not start this one. Kelly was the moderater before me, and I don't think she was the one who started it. If I were you, I would just check with Lydia, or one of the other mods, especially if you would like it listed in the challenges listing.

Wooohooo! I am almost giddy! Lol

Today is perfect 26 celcius on my balcony with a bit of breeze and cloudy. Grumpy came over and we ate on my balcony. So much easier to talk without the mask on. Yes we were social distancing as well. There are not many days in the summer that my balcony is cool enough to sit out.

I had ideas for his camping trip.. We need to keep me busy he likes to say! I was talking to him about the spices I have. I can make small paper envelopes for each spice set. The guys pour the spices on the food then can burn the bits of paper.

Moon meets Mars, meteors: Watch for the waning moon to pay a visit with Mars late Saturday and early Sunday. The red planet will appear dramatically close to our moon, closing the gap between them until they are less than a degree apart in the dawn southern sky. The apparent separation between the two worlds will be small enough that you can cover it with just your outstretched thumb. Throughout this week, you can also watch the Perseid meteor shower ramp up. Meteors will radiate from the namesake constellation, Perseus, which will be rising in the northeast late at night. The annual sky show officially peaks Tuesday and Wednesday, but skywatchers can see the uptick of shooting stars leading up to these dates. — Andrew Fazekas

I have marked my calendar for the Perseids. I saw an awesome huge meteor go across the sky the other night! It was amazing.

I will never get a chance to see the stars in the city. Grumpy often goes out of the city to lay on his car to watch stars.

Default S2S20AUG 'Celebrating Friendship'

The first Thursday in August is time for another challenge. Lynn suggested friendship and that is a super reason to get our mojos back and celebrate our friendships. This month's challenge comes with a comittment to make and send a card to a friend. And it will be the inside of the card that matters. No, not the inside stamping or decoration, but the message you send, telling her/him how much you appreciate them, or thank them, or pray for them, or whatever else you want to say. Even if you have not done any other challenge this year, I encourage you to do this one.

Jayne, it counts, butI am sure there is that one person, who you did not realize was having a hard time. Maybe she/he lives right around the corner from you, and you never thought of sending them a card because you see or wave at them every week. I'm sure we can all think of one person. This week, I certainly did.

Lynn, cool layout, and yummy looking food. But since I have gone GF, I decided I did not need baked goods. I still eat chocolate and ice cream! I can't believe it's been 8 years since I started on that lifestyle.

Oh. That was my visit to the gluten free bakery. Way too much work to make dessert just for me so I go there and grab things to put in the freezer. They make a wonderful quiche for one. They even have GF sour dough bread. Mind you it must be 8 months since I was there last! The only GF place I go regularly is the little Chinese restaurant.. They don't use MSG or artificial stuff since their son has food allergies. Just clean simple Chinese food.

OH MY DOG! I just got hit by a man hole cover!!

Going across the top of Toronto on Sheppard ave going east. There are 3 lanes going east. I am in the center one. I see something on the ground ahead in the median lane. The black Audi SUV drives oner it.. It flips and hits my car! The SUV drove over a loose man hole cover and it hit my car. I found a place to park my car off the road and did a LOT of heavy breathing. Had no idea who to call so I called emergency and spoke to the police. They told me to go back where it happened so I could get a street number.. Which there wasn't! So I went to the church and called them back to tell them the name of the church..school across the road. Then I just sat in my car shaking. The police did arrive to check that the man hole cover was replaces and I was sent to a collision reporting center. Now I am home and I am gonna crawl under the covers.

If this is the luck of the Irish you can have it!
