Happy Thursday everyone! Here is my offering for two of the challenges: altered playing card and gelato background. I really enjoyed this, especially the gelatos. There is something about getting your fingers into a project. I'm enjoying everyone's work and thanks to those who got this all started:

Happy Thursday, ladies.  My tips got lost by the wayside today when I woke up miserable. Aches, pains, headache, yuck, how is a person supposed to get any crafting done ?

I did learn something - or relearn something - that I knew when mulberry paper was all the rage. Remember taking a wet brush and outlining the piece of paper needed, instead of trying to rip it or cut it? I was watching one of the coloring videos and saw the hostess stamp a sentiment on tissue and then draw around it with a wet paintbrush and tear it gently.  The edges blended right in to the bg, no hard edges.  So that’s tip 1 today.

And 2, did you know those foam pieces we use to pick up ink?  Did you know they were completely washable?  No need to throw them out and buy new ones.  Just rinse them out at the end of the session and they will be ready for more coloring the next day.

I learned that in the TH class.  And all this time I’ve been throwing them out after a while and buying new ones!

So, two tips today everyone probably knew, except for me, lol.

Craft on!

I remembered my third hint.  There is a way to slow down the videos that I discovered recently.  Some of you may already know this.  Some videos have a setting gear at the top of the screen.  Some have three dots upper right.  Clicking on either of those brings up different things, one of which is playback speed.  I find 0.5x is a good speed for me, because I can actually follow along with the video.

Please let me know if any of these help, and thanks for joining us on MMJ.

Kandie great tips, I’ve have loads of the foam ink pads, when I get home I will wash them all, also slowing videos down, I did t know that.
I used to rip mulberry paper but never thought of stamping on it first.
I need to remember all this for when I get home.

Hi Kandie: Sorry you are not feeling good.
Thanks for reviewing these tips.  I knew about wetting the paper...I even do that with any paper  or cs I want to tear and have been washing my sponges for quite some time but I didn’t realize you can choose a video speed.  That’ll be very helpful in the future.
Thanks and rest up or take it slow and drink lots of water.

Hello,
Kandie- love your tips- if you slow the speed, will it make the voice in 'slow motion' too- hope that makes sense.  I will go try it now!

I need to get into the crafting room and will give it a go with Gelato's today.  I went to Dick Blick for Gel Matte Medium, and a bottle was $25.00- Yikes!  It was 30% off, and I will eventually look at HL, Michaels and Joann to see if I spent way too much- do not remember paying that before, but I guess it lasts a very long time.......

Have a great day ladies!

Shelly

Shelly, the voice sloooows dooooown toooooo, lol.  Is there a charge for posting on YouTube?  Maybe for different lengths of videos?  Makes me wonder if this is why some of them are speeded up.

I tried another of the water-soluble videos a few days ago.  Nothing I want to post on here, lol, as I botched it up terribly.  But now that I have the idea, I’m going to make a project based on what I learned, and I promise I will post that one!

Hopefully we will have a new MMJer soon.  Dawn aka dawnmercedes may be joining our messy fun!

Just found this thread - so cool!  I think I'll be playing along with these challenges.  Just getting to love mixed media and there is some great inspiration here.

Ok I tried another video which used a floral napkin, Lindy’s sprays, and a stencil which looks like cell structure.  Or blobs.  Not sure which.  Anyway, I found a beautiful fall napkin to use, bought a couple of Lindy’s Starlight Sprays, and found a stencil called Cell Theory.  On the video I watched, the woman’s project is so gorgeous.  Mine seems to look like a bacterial inflammation has hit the leaves!  Oh well.  I’ll keep practicing till I get it right, lol.

First try...

Dawn, my recommendation would be in the art pads, fine arts, or wherever the canvases, sketchbooks, watercolor tablets, and mixed media pads are in your local craft store, a spiral mixed media notebook, one in which the pages open like a book and not the kind that opens like a steno pad.  Mixed media is a category of paper, like tracing, sketch, and watercolor.  Easy to find!

I know at Hobby Lobby you can get one for between 9.99 and maybe 12.99, with a 40% off coupon it would be even cheaper.  Joann Fabric Stores have some, very few, in the fine arts department.  Michael’s Craft Stores have them also where the art canvases and tablets are.  That way you can also tear out pages for practicing.

Is that confusing enough?

Love this idea and video, Kandie:
I have a box full of napkins I saved and the cell theory stencil so will definitely give this a try.  Your Autumn leaves are wonderful
I imagine you could use diluted reinkers in place of the sprays

....welcome Kelly and Dawn.

Welcome Kelly and Dawn.  Look forward to seeing what you create.

Your journal pages look great Kandie..I think you did a top job.  Thanks for the tips on journals.  I am using a cheap art journal but I think I would like a spiral one...on the wish list lol as I have a few to use up first lol.

Happy creating everyone.

Michaels had buy 1 get 1 50% off, so I bought two.  My main journal, which is my first, is a Dylusions journal, and I don’t like the page color, it’s like a Manila and the pages are kind of flimsy.  I bought 2 of the Mixed Media ones with the white pages and thicker paper on Thursday.  I sure don’t need three journals going, but too late now, lol.

Kandie, on those thinner pages, you can reinforce them.  You can cover with gel medium and add a base layer of paper, fabric, tissue, whatever.  Or simply give them a good coat of gesso to begin with.

Another option for a journal is to make individual pages and hole punch for a 3-ring binder.

Melody, I’m having fun doing pages right now as practice, but I do believe that in time I will start a binder with designs I want to keep.  Oh yes, and I always reinforce with gesso and papers.  They just seem so thin when compared to the mixed media spiral books!

Hi Ladies,
Kandie, if you feel the pages are too thin, some will add mixed medium and glue two pages together.....  I am sure as you look at MM you will eventually find this.
I also see to put parchment paper behind the page you are working on so your inks do not bleed through the pages and wreck the work- won't help back to back pages though......

I have visited Dick Blick and they had buy one get one free....so I had to pick up a couple more mixed media journals......  and a couple of watercolor spiral notebooks as well. Why not!  I usually pick up journals for my nieces as well.....  They are really quite gifted at art!

Hope everyone has had a great weekend!

Shelly

Kandie, I watched the videos on the crayons and specifically gelatos last night.  I have watched videos before on gelatos but had forgotten what I could do with them.  Thanks for sharing those and they gave me lots of ideas.

I think it’s a great idea to keep an art journal going.  I started one a couple of years ago just playing around with techniques and then tried it out on my scrapbooking and cards and over time I have forgotten what I did LOL.  It’s only now having this thread and the challenges that I am revisiting some old techniques and learning new ones.  I didn’t utilise my journal properly and like how Kandie is doing practice double pages on techniques.  I know other ladies on this site sometimes do that and keep a record on what they used/did/video, etc and that is something I intend to start.

I also like watching the videos as it is a reminder to me of supplies I already have and haven’t used, or for a long time.  I bought the scribble sticks and tried them after watching one video a year ago and didn’t like them.  After watching the videos Kandie posted I realised I wasn’t even using them correctly LOL.

I am enjoying seeing what everyone is creating and how we all interpret the challenges differently.  I hope to use the techniques I’m learning on projects for other challenges on this site.

Gracie is our next hostess with the mostest in October and looking forward to seeing what we will be challenged to create.  Before then, I have to finish Kandie’s...2 down, 1 to go LOL.

Happy creating everyone.

I suppose like a lot of you I find Gelli Prints that don’t work out as backgrounds work perfectly for die cutting.
Here is my Saturday morning project.
Fall is always inspiring to me.

Kandie: I love your second attempt in the cooler colors.  Both tries are really good.
I will see what napkin inspires me and start this afternoon.  This morning we are going to walk Kea and get some shopping.

Here is a tag I made for Nancy’s DTGD challenge.

I’m making a collage card at present and then back to finishing my paper towel and tape cards.

What’s everyone working on?

Happy day

Wow, ladies, both of your projects are absolutely gorgeous!  You have inspired me to do something interesting today, I don’t know what yet, but I’ll get some kind of project done. If I ever get off this couch and warm blanket, that is.

Good morning.  Here is my card for yesterday’s color challenge.  I took some TH paper and added more elements like a plant, a crackle stamp, and several stencils overlapping one end.  Just an example of a bit of MM and definitely a J, lol.

Kandie that’s beautiful. I bought that paper today lol.  Couldn’t resist after my appointment I popped in for one thing. As if I’d do that lol.

Jan, the challenges are on a separate thread but also listed at the beginning of here. You will have to go to the challenge thread for the videos. This thread is just for chat and creations.  Hope this helps.

Here is the link to go to.

Beautiful Kandie! You sure are going full tilt on these wonderful mixed media challenges! Love it!
Can't wait to see yours too Jayne!
My back has been really bothering me lately...so not much production here!
