WCMDTLC08 ~ Nested Flowers

Happy World Card Making Day! In honor of this special day, let us make the world a more beautiful place and plant flowers - on our cards! For today's special Technique Lover's Challenge we are going to make a card with hand made nested circle flowers.

I have long admired these type of embellishments in the store, but they can be expensive. Making your own is not only a great way to use scraps and save money, but it is also fun and easy. If you are not sure how to make them, see below for my tutorial.

Nested Flowers Tutorial

Supplies Needed

1. Paper or material for your flowers.
Anything you can cut, punch or die cut; scraps are fine.
Some examples:
patterned paper/cardstock/newspaper/sheet music
ribbon
lace
fabric
tulle
mesh
velvet
felt

2. Five (or more) circles cut with die cuts, punches, or scissors.
I like them hand cut the best - the imperfections and wrinkles look good!

Tip: I punch or die cut 5 of the largest circle with different materials, then hand trim them, making each one smaller and smaller. Size of circle used is up to you - I used a 2.5 inch circle as my largest.

3. A paper piercer or hole punch and brad to attach the circles together.

4. Optional: Paper distresser.

Directions:

1. Cut your circles. Distress them if you wish.

2. Layer the nested circles to make a flower. The largest will go on the bottom, the smallest on top.

3. Starting with the largest bottom circle, use your paper piercer to pierce a hole in the center. Put the next layer on top and paper pierce it; repeat until all layers have a hole in them and attach with brad. I like to attach it very tightly as that causes the layers to bunch up, shaping the flower.

4. Optional: Shape the flower by rolling edges, tearing, folding and wrinkling.
  • Design Ideas:
  • Experiment with different shapes - squares, floral - whateva!
  • Top the brad with a button
  • Shape them for texture dimension
  • Distress/fray the edges and sponge them with ink or acrylic paint for a shabby chic look
  • Hand stitch them for a homey feel.
  • Fold/gather some of the layers for a rippled look.
Your turn! Let's see your flowers!

Here is my sample card and here is a close up of the nested flower.

This is a new technique to me. I struggled a bit, what with my personal challenge of only Christmas cards, but I did finally come up with something --

Well, this was definately a challenge for me! I'm going to have to revisit it again at a later date as I'm not happy with the card I came up with. I'm running out of stuff! I even ran out of glue dots!! What's a girl to do?

Anyhow, here's my card. I swear, those flowers are purple and YELLOW, not orange.

I love all the cards so far - each and every one is so different and unique. Really great job on the challenges everyone thank you so much for playing! I am smiling so silly right now :)

Suzy_H 10-04-2008 05:49 PM

Just please recheck your keyword - about 4 people so far have typed the wrong key so their card will get lost in the gallery.
