Good job there’s no calories on our island, I’m just seeing trees with different chocolates hanging from them , steve would choose sausages not chocolate though.

I won't touch the cherry kisses but if there's choccie or caramel nuts I'm there.

Lynn yes Madrid had storm Filomena and the most snow they’ve had since the 70’s, four people have died, thank goodness we didn’t go to England for Christmas as we travel the length of Spain through Madrid, all the country from bilboa in the north to the north of Murcia have had snow, we had rain!

We still have strawberries growing in the veg plot, they are taking a long time to ripen but then we haven’t had any sun since Thursday until this afternoon.

Jan, I'm glad you didn't travel to England, too. So sad that people died. The weather has been wild the last few years, it seems. I'm glad you only got rain rather than snow.

We went to the uk last January until end of February and the weather was very mild, no snow anywhere, we said we were lucky as Madrid and northern Spain do very often get some snow, you could see it on the Picos de europa but none on the roads, even the ski places in Granada have had to close this year

We had lots of large strawberry fields where I grew up. When I was young, I used to pick strawberries to earn some pocket change. I think I earned 50 cents for each large bucket that I picked...that's a lot of strawberry picking squatting on the ground and walking like a duck for hours. I sure couldn't do that now!

When I was a girl our next door neighbours who had seven kids all used to go potatoe picking in the school holidays, I wanted my mum to take us as it sounded exciting riding on a trailer behind the tractor, my mum worked from home as she was a curtain maker so obviously we couldn’t go, steve said be thankful as he went once and he said it was backbreaking.

I'm sure it was back breaking. Strawberry season was short and only lasted about 3 to 4 weeks. That was enough for me!

About 15 or so years ago I picked pumpkins. I forget how much they paid me. Later on they hired kids to do it so they could pay cheap wages. My boys did it one season, but too much work for the pay.

Oh we need blueberries too!

My body is finally being nice to me again. I guess relaxing with murder and mayhem did the trick! Lol

When I was younger I used to visit my aunt and pick raspberries. I think my lips stayed red for days from the amount I used to eat. I did come back with enough to make jam too! Lol

We were only recently chatting about childhood memories and I used to help my mum pick potatoes and also peas. I used to eat more peas than went in the basket lol. We used to have to take the basket to the farmer and he would weigh it. Mum got paid by the basket. The field was behind our home. Good memories and not many kids would do this kind of back breaking work now. I loved it. A real community feel.

Lynn, Blessing Island it is! And yes, there are blueberries on the island, as well as other produce to keep us healthy.
i remember picking cucumbers. You probably have no idea how many cucumbers need to be picked from a one acre field! I hated it, because there are little prickles on them, and we worked all day in the hot sun. Our pay? Once a week, we could join dad when he delivered bushels, and bushels, and more bushels to the pickle factory. Then, on the way home, we stopped for an ice cream.
When I was 14, we started working in the tobacco harvest. There were a lot of tobacco farms in the area where we lived. I was a leaf handler, which meant you picked up 3 leaves (they are big) and handed them to the stick handler, who wove them over a stick with twine, and when she was finished one stick, I grabbed it and put it on the elevator which would take it into the kiln. All day long. When the whole kiln was full, our day was finished. Sometimes at 5 p.m, sometimes at 3. Our hands and wrists were black with tar and that stuff was hard to wash off. That is why I never smoked. If it coated my hands so badly, what would it do to my lungs! I did that every summer for 5 years. It was good money. $14. a day, which was a lot in the 60's.

On Blessing Island we can go for walks and pick whatever we want! Oh oh better still I will help teach grumpy's dog to pick stuff that is low to the ground. Then we will go to Crystal Creek to wash it before we have it for a snack! I am going to have to start a file with all the place names! Lol

Ah Blessing Island, I am ready to go. Even though it is not exceptionally cold for January (minus 3°C today), I am cold. I could always depend on going to visit my son in Austin, Texas, for warm weather, but they are having a cold winter. On the weekend they had 3-4 inches of snow. Unheard of! The whole family loved it and built a snowman, and went tobogganing. They also discovered they have a snowdog.
So it's the island for me!

I’m guessing we all are ready to go if only to get away from all the bad news.

Ina that sounds back breaking work Ina picking those tobacco leaves!

our eldest went veg picking in the summer while he was at university, he hated it until the farmer asked who could drive so he got to drive the tractor up and down the field, he said it was boring but easier,

I love all the planning for our Blessing Island! Yes, Lynn, you'll have to draw a map and have a key listing all the wonderful places on the island!

Jan, I did not pick the leaves. The men picked the leaves in the field. That was the worst for the first few pickings, as they had to bend low to pick them. They would pick with one hand and carried them under the other arm, until they could not fit more in. Then they walked to the end of the row, to put them into a wagon. When it was full, the tractor driver would drive them to us at the buildings called kilns,. The drivers were usually older men who could no longer do the back breaking work.

No Sharon, that was in Strathroy, a small town where I grew up, in southwestern Ontario. It is about 20miles from London. Ontario, which you may have heard of.
i spent about 4 hours creating a card today, for my grandson's 10th birthday. Even at that age, he still likes dinosaurs, so it's a good thing that I bought an extra pack of that dinosaur patterned paper from SU last year. I posted the pictures to my gallery. It's a special fold, which has been around for a long time, but I just discovered it last week. I made one for my other grandson's 6th birthday on Saturday, but I forgot to take pictures. It's called a secret message card. Check it out in my gallery. I still haven't found out how to insert links with this tablet.

I have survived! Yup dental appointment! Yuck! I have been going to the same place since the early 90s so they have seen grumpy grow up. They are also quite used to me. The office manager helped grumpy choose the best dental coverage plan for him. Yup no reason for me to change. I even got a new sulcabrush. Strange name but I use it when I am watching TV and it has really helped with my crooked teeth. The dentist likes how healthy my gums are..so here is the link if any of you are interested

Yes I was hoping that it would be OK to have a Cathedral Grove on the island so I can talk to the big guy upstairs. I don't want to exclude anyone by saying a church. Respect for each other and our beliefs is the only rule in the island. Oh and Kathy, no stealing someone else's chocolate! Lol

So grumpy would like to go on the island today! Yup with the weird weather, no bathrooms and crazy office politics I think he has very good reasons to get away.

Lynn what a lovely place, looks so peaceful. I’m packing my bags Lynn, steve thinks we may be going into lockdown again soon if things get worse, we’ve had a few more rules although in our small area we’ve not done too badly, some villages are now in lockdown, I will be on my way as soon as I’ve had my hair trimmed.

I'm not quite ready to leave yet. Some more laundry, some pack8ng, and setting up my house plants for my prolonged absence. But, by all means, Lynnm you and grumpy can go ahead and scout out the best places for us to live, eat and create! Enjoy the trip.

I will be cleaning the house ready to leave as we’ve just found out we are in lockdown again, we don’t think we can even go a walk for two weeks, at the moment! How depressing

Today we are having a picnic in Strawberry Fields. The air smells sweet from the ripening berries. We have tables and chairs ready for everyone. Grumpy has gone for a walk with his dog but we will all come together for a meal. The sun is warm on our skin. We have some nice shade trees near a babbling brook to relax before we eat. Each of us is just enjoying their time what ever way they wish. After the meal we can gather for a campfire or gaze at the meteor shower.
