Question New to me computer question

I've been given a computer (just the CPU) and know how to hook it up, but am afraid the Internet won't work and my email - and SCS! Horrors, really! Suggestions? Do I need to call my cable/internet company? Thanks in advance.

When I dbl click on the big E on my desktop for Internet Explorer ( I get to AOL and my email sign-in (been there free for years and years). Have cable and Internet thru Comcast. This computer is a 2001 Dell; the "new" one is about 2005 model E - don't see a name but a big G - Gateway?

Okay so maybe your internet connection is through a phone line, plugged in on the back of your current Dell. All you have to do is plug that into your new CPU and you should be GTG

Thanks. Am sure you don't mean dial up when you say phone line...Nope, not that. There's a Cisco cable modem attached to my Dell and to a wall cable type outlet.

I know enought about computers to be dangerous. What I am afraid of besides everything, is losing all my stored stuff on the C drive; old emails, Favorites, pictures etc. When I moved I just plugged in the compter and AOL etc. was all there after I called the cable co. and a teach hooked up the modem after cutting a box in the wall - the TV is on the other side of the wall.

I can handle a new email account etc. But thsn to beg the next ques. how to move stuff from old C drive to the new CPU. Should I even try? Or do I need to hook the 2 of them in tandem, office like? Lydia you are so helpful; sorry to be a scaredy cat and a pesty question person!

Oh my gosh don't be sorry!!

I have DSL so my modem has a phone line not a cable. So whatever goes from your modem to your Dell will go from your modem to your Gateway.

Honestly - for the files - I would sign up with Carbonite right now. Have it back up all your files (should take about 24 hours) and then download them onto the new computer. Online Backup

Now IE I am not sure about, but Firefox does let you set up an account that saves your favorites for you. IE stinks - you should change anyway - LOL.

Oh my. My spelling/typing is sooooo bad. Now that I think of it why do I want the "new" computer. Am hoping it will be faster for one thing! Maybe I should leave well enough alone until the Dell dies...

Thanks so much Lydia. I'll check into Carbonite backup. I do have an external drive (a gift from my daughter) that I never figured out how to use. I could do that first before anything else. I have heard ugly things about IE but know nothing about Firefox. I'll look into that too. I think it will be a while before I make any changes. Smiles and hugs, Lydia.
