Default I need information regarding visitor messages

As much time as I spend here, I should know all about your features - but I guess I stick with the same ones and just do not visit other areas.
I need some tips on using the visitor message feature - I just discovered "new" old messages when I clicked on my avatar photo.
Can I request that alerts be sent (like the one for pm's) when there is a new message? How else is it accessed?
There is probably a description some where but I do now know where to look for it.
Thanks!

Unfortunately, there is no alert for them. The only way you see them is to go to your own profile. I don't do that very often, so I have turned my visitor messages off. That way if people need me, they don't leave a message there that goes unnoticed for months. They can PM me instead.

Thanks, Lorien. Turning it off is probably the answer.

Yes, turn it off and then no one can leave messages you might miss. Mine has been off quite a while. I prefer the private messages because I check that regularly.
