Default I am "Search function" challenged

I have been trying to find cards using specific colors and specific stamp sets in the gallery but am having no luck. On the Gallery home page I am doing advanced search. I type in the color I want to see "Kraft". In the drop down menu I am choosing the stamp name (Snow Swirled) but I get back results from every card ever made using the color. Is there something else I need to do or is it impossible to get a good search? Thanks

My guess it's a program problem.

I think it may be a program problem as well, however, I'm not sure either.

I get kind of frustrated at times with the Search function because it appears you can't search within just a particular gallery, whether it is a particular stamp gallery, an SCS member's gallery, or your own Favorites gallery.

Also, as you mentioned, it seems to pull up from the whole SCS gallery and gives me either way too many items to search through if I am looking for just a particular one or it says something to the effect I didn't define my search well enough. Don't know--maybe I'm doing it wrong.

I HATE the gallery Search function. It will never do a search for an EXACT phrase. For example, if I search for "who loves you" (it's the name of a non SU stamp set) I get every result containing "who" "loves" and "you". I've tried quotes, + marks, %s, no luck. It's so frustrating! I've e-mailed asking SCS about this months ago, and never got a response. I've never come across a Search engine that couldn't perform exact phrase searches before!

hey, it's just not the gallery. I couldn't find a thread that I had started and I did a search for it, couldn't find it anywhere. I even did a search for my name and couldn't find it using the search function. Finally went to my profile and clicked on threads I've been in and there it was! Couldn't find it any other way. The search function here is not that great any any arena!

I'll agree that the gallery search is frustrating. There is a way to do the gallery search you want, though. First, display the Snow Swirled gallery, which is here: Snow Swirled by pepperann at Splitcoaststampers

After you've displayed that gallery, click on Search in the left column, type in the word kraft, and click Go. That returns 59 cards, most of which are what you are looking for.

I usually use Google to search the forums. Type something like this into Google's search box:

site:www.splitcoaststampers.com/forums "search phrase goes here"

The first part of that line limits the search to the SCS forums. You can follow that with whatever phrase you are searching for, putting the entire phrase inside the quotation marks. It is super fast.

To search the gallery, the search line would be like this:

site:www.splitcoaststampers.com/gallery "search phrase goes here"

That is also really fast, but the problem is that Google doesn't return thumbnails like the SCS Gallery search does.

thanks for the comments you guys. we've got some forum search improvements in the works, nothing for the gallery just now unfortunately. we have developer discussions three mornings a week, I've sent this thread to Scott and Mark and it'll be a topic of conversation for wednesday morning. if there are any quick improvements we can make, we will.

with a site of our size, search is a beast. it's something we're nearly always wrestling with and yeah, it's not great at present.

Judi, you mentioned using Google. I would wonder how up-to-date those results are (would it get stuff that's been added in the last few days) and also how complete (google doesn't index all our pages). what have your experiences been like with google search?

Daven, I've done a couple of test searches to try to figure that out. Google returns results from one and two days ago. It does not yet have results from 5 or 6 hours ago. And you are correct -- all of the threads are not listed. I've been lucky, though, because what I've been looking for has almost always been included.

Google also does custom searches: http://www.google.com/cse/?hl=en
Pricing is here: http://www.google.com/support/custom...c=cb&lev=index
