Random and kinda funny foreign banner ads

Is it just me or are any of you constantly looking at banner ads for Shaadi.com which is an Indian matchmaking service, MSN Matrimony, and a slew of ads from companies in the UK? Maybe it's because my husband is in London this week, I don't know, but I had to laugh. Talk about fish outta water. I don't think we are their target audience.

Nope, just stamping ads on mine, plus a few for women's clothing tossed in every once in awhile. I think they have said before the ads "targeted" based on websites you have visited, and the cookies left on your computer by those site. So, the London connection makes sense. Don't know about the dating sites, reminds me of when I was suddenly getting all sorts of SPAM e-mails for dating sites, like sites for all sorts of ethnic backgrounds, age groups, etc. None of which I wanted or needed. Who knew there were specific dating sites for each ethnic group.
Anyway, clear your cookies might get rid of some of it.

Strange because the only sites I have been to lately are here, SU, Wells Fargo and Mammoth Mountain to check the ski report! I'm not Indian nor am I looking to get married again. At least I'm not getting Viagra ads!

I get the Shaddi and others too and I've never visited sites like that or even similar.

You're talking about the banner ads at the top, yes? Mine are almost all stamping related.

shellpole 03-04-2010 02:05 AM

mine are too sabrina......

and you have to remember that not only americans use this site....

i wonder why the dating stuff?...odd really, that!

I've been getting the Shaadi.com ads when I'm here! Kinda funny to be here! Like you said....What's the target audience?

I haven't noticed the UK ads, but then I wasn't paying much attention...but must say, it's hard to miss the Shaadi ones. LOL!

I think some of those ads key off of keywords in the thread. So, if you say, "Does anyone know where I can find some cool Indian inspired stamps?" Then, you may see some ads that would key off the word "Indian" or "India."

That is funny. True, we most likely are not the target audience for some of the ads we see.

I get stamping and charity, but mostly stamping banners. Hannant, that is a very British name? Maybe there is a famous Hannant connected to the British colonization of India?

Of course as I type this, there is an SUV ad up. How did they know.....LOL

nancystamps 03-04-2010 07:12 AM

I bet they're showing up because in CE we were talking about the Indian-inspired ice dancing routine done by the US team in the Olympics!

If you use Mozilla Firefox I suggest you get Ad-Blocker. It's free (Google search and download) and will prevent you from seeing any ads, especially those ads that are unrelated to stamping and therefore more likely to be malware.

I have ad-blocker since I use Firefox, but I allow ads for SCS. I found I missed all the stamping website ads. How am I to know about all the sales and the latest and greatest releases if I don't get the ads? I just ignore all the non-stamping related ads.
