Exclamation Photo too large to Upload? No problem!

If your image is too large for our uploader, don't despair!

If you have photo editing software already, just use it to resize your image to no larger than 2048 pixels in any direction. This is still an extremely large photo size and you will not have any loss of quality - photos become blurry when enlarged, but will retain their clarity at a smaller size.

If you do NOT have photo editing software, you can do the following:

1) Change the settings on your camera so that no editing is necessary. You may have a VGA setting which is perfect. Or, if you can choose anything less than 3 MP, or 3 megapixels, you will be good to go. Then, just shoot and upload! Most camera manuals can be found by Googling, or by going to this online manuals site.

2) Get some free editing software, like Picasa, (help for that program is here), or resize your photos for free online, at sites like this one or this one

3) For help with Iphoto, click here.

Feel free to email [email protected] any time!

OK, I do not have photo editing software, and have no clue what a VGA setting is ( I use auto on just about everything) - now what?? I have a Canon Power shot XL100 IS, and can't find any info on the online manuals site, guess I am hopelessly going to be unable to upload ever again!
I never encountered this problem before, why now??

If you look in #2 - there's a link to a free, very easy site where you can resize your photos if you don't want to change your camera settings.

We had to change the size of uploads because people were uploading files big enough to crash the uploader. The file size we allow now is still extremely large, but not unlimited.

Also, I googled your camera and found this: You will want to choose M3 for your photo size

Changing the Resolution and Compression
1. With the camera power on, press the [/B] button.

2. In the Function menu select L* or using the or button.

* The current setting is displayed.
3. Select the resolution or compression you wish to set using the < or > button.
You can shoot the image right after selecting settings by pressing the shutter button. This screen will appear again, once the image is shot.
6. Press the [/B] button.
7. Shoot the image.

  • Some settings are not available with certain Shooting modes.
  • The resolution can be changed in the (movie) mode however compression cannot be changed independently.

WOW, you are a GENIUS!!! Followed your instructions to get to where the "M3" is and I think it worked - will check back after dinner - looks as though my 2 pictures are uploading - you really ROCK at this stuff! Thanks for helping an old lady out!!

I'm having a problem uploading photos all of a sudden. I've never had a problem before and tonight I can't upload as the file is too large.

I never had to resize before has something changed on SCS? Can you assist?

Yes, there's a post in this forum about the change. We still allow huge photo sizes, but not unlimited. Some users photos were so large they were crashing the uploader. Digital camera technology has changed and allows for gigantic photos

However, the help in resizing is the very first post in this thread so just look before your posts - there are all kinds of links there in my original post - you don't have to have any special software - I've given lots of options.

The easiest thing is to change your camera settings to shoot pics below 3 megapixels when you're shooting cards. That is still a giant photo - larger than your computer monitor if you printed it...

Question Question for you...

Thanks for the great info about the free online picture resizer. It's so easy to use that I've been cropping and resizing some of my older photos getting ride of all that unslightly gray space around them.

Question: I edited some of my older posts and replaced the photo with a new cropped (and smaller) photo. The new photo does not show in My Gallery until I click on the post. Is there a step I am missing to get the updated picture to appear in My Gallery? Here's an example of one I changed: Rose Tag Anniversary Card by Muffin's Mama at Splitcoaststampers. Thanks for your help.

Hi Mary!

Glad you found that helpful.

On that card, I see the thumbnail and the large view, so it may have just been catching up. There is a bit of a lag when you edit a photo...

Me too this happened this morning and I am like what????? I have never had any problems before and so glad to hear that it's not just me. I figured the site was trying to save space ( can't blame you).

Thanks for the info on the camera setting that sounds way faster!!!!

for what it is worth.....I have one camera designated for shooting my cards to upload...It has 3.2 MP and I never have to wait for uploads of images with it to load.....Size does matter and if you have an older camera with smaller MP,,,that will help keep the image size down and you won't have to go through those other steps(but I am glad she posted them as I need them for some other images I shoot)

Hi there!

Did you read the first post in this thread - there are all kinds of quick resources there, including a free online resizer.

But if you're using PS, just go to image> size and change it to something LESS than 2048 pixels in whatever the larger dimension is - width or height.

Anything over 2048 wide or high will be rejected.

Here is my solution. I use iPhoto on a Mac. I "export" my picture from the software and it gives me the option to set the max pixel size. I'm able to set the larger number to 2048 and that solves my problem.

I downloaded the free program and am STILL having problems using the program to resize my pics. Please help.....I am usually a very patient person but this is driving me crazy!! Also, I use a SANYO VPC-E760 style of camera. Could you please direct me how to change the setting to shoot under 3 megapixels. I agree....this is probably the easiest thing to do! THANKS A BUNCH!!!

thanks for the help! This is the first time I've tried uploading anything for a while. Was rather surprised to have it come up that my image was too large. Hadn't had that happen for quite a while. Glad to see there was some help here. Thanks!!

Okay- I have a question- why would some cards upload fine and others be too big?

Here's the best explanation, Tami.

okay- but WHY are the pictures different sizes? I am not changing anything when I take the picture. I take 4 pics- 2 with auto and 2 on my indoor/party button and then choose which one to edit. All I do is crop them (to the same area every time) and occasionally straighten them. So WHY are some pictures okay and others not? (and this just started for me app. 2 days ago- this has not been happening as long as it has been for others based on the date of the comments).

I understand that some pics are too big for the system- I want to know why some are and some aren't

The indoor party setting and your regular setting are creating images of different sizes.

hmm... okay- I'll have to see which one is causing the issue and NOT use it

I have some cards to take a pic of later today- I'll take one card using the regular setting and one using the indoor party setting and see which one is giving me fits Thanks Lydia

well, I did two cards on the regular setting and a square on on the indoor party setting and they all uploaded fine so who knows what the deal was/is with them. I even uploaded them in two separate "transactions" to see- nope- nothing

Thanks so much for this thread. I didn't know how to change picture size and hadn't had a problem before. I'll try this later today.
Thanks.

Without changing any settings on your camera, different photos can be of different sizes. For a simple example, shooting a scene with lots of colors will result in a larger photo than shooting a scene with fewer colors. If you take a photo of a person in a flowered dress and another photo of the same person in the same setting in a solid color dress, the first photo will be larger because for each change in color within the photo a certain amount of space on the disc is needed to record each color change.
