What program are you trying to open it with, Vicky? Because png involves transparency, not all programs can handle it, and that's probably why you're seeing a black box.
IrfanView is a free graphics program which would let you open a png and then save it as a jpeg.
Are you using photoshop? Or which software? And can you open the png and it looks fine before you convert?
I've tried Gimp, Microsoft pictures and my printer - Lexmark and the png always comes out a black box and yes, it looks fine before I convert. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, Lydia

That's weird, because I know that GIMP handles png files well.
Aha, I see what you see, when I save a png digi and then re-open it.It's something to do with the jpegs not supporting transparency.
I think I've found a way round it in GIMP anyway.
Open your png image in GIMP.
Click Edit, and then Copy Visible.
Click File, and New.
You can leave it at the default size, because that's always the same as your current open image. But you do need to click on Advanced Options.
Now where it says Fill With, the drop-down box offers Foreground colour, Background Colour, White and Transparency. Choose white and then click OK.
Now a new white blank image opens up as the active image. Click on Edit and Paste (or use Control +V), and your png image will get pasted into this. Save this as a jpeg, and then when you close it and open it again, the background will be white instead of black.
There could be an easier way, but DH is making coffee right now, and this has worked three times for me - so hopefully it'll work for you. I'll play around when I have time and see if there's something easier.
I open png files in Word. You just have to click on the insert tab and choose picture. Insert it there....I am using png files from SU digital studio in Word because I don't have MDS.
