First of all, holy huge stamp!
Second, the problem is, I can not get the image all over the front of the card. Obviously the stamp is more than big enough, I just must not be doing something right.
I apply the ink to the stamp, I think I'm doing that just fine.
I think I line the stamp up on the paper fine, it covers the whole front. I stand up and push down, all over the back of the stamp. Lift the stamp off, but the image is not all over the front of the card.
So how do you use big background stamps like Canvas?
with most background stamps I lay the stamp down rubber up, then ink it (with canvas I press the pad all over the stamp and then wipe it over the whole thing so I don't get pad lines), then I press the cardstock on the stamp and rub back of my cardstock with my fingers, especially the edges. I also use some scrap paper to press the cardstock on the stamp so I don't get my fingers dirty.
Makes total sense, basically do it backwards from how I did it - put the paper on the stamp, instead of the stamp on the paper. I'll definitely try it. Thanks.
you can also use your brayer to run over the cardstock once it is laying on the rubber part of the stamp. that is what i usually do. holding the cardstock as i do it of course, or else you brayer your paper right off the stamp.

Do you do your stamping on one of those resin folding tables? They tend to 'give' a little when you press on them, and so you will miss a spot sometimes when stamping onto your paper.

Sandi Genovese from DIY stands on hers! She says she puts the paper on the floor and then the stamp on that and then stands on it! I've never tried it. I have a large buffet table for my stamping/scrapping table, so I usually don't have any trouble.
Try standing up when you stamp. The extra height helps you put more even pressure on your stamp. HTH
I do it the same way cannontc does except that I also put an old mouse pad under the stamp. I have been getting much better coverage since I started doing this.

I sit when I stamp, but I did stand, and look all around under the stamp to make sure it was all covering the front of the card, and I stood to put my weight on the stamp.
I stamp at my wooden dining room table. I fugred that was solid enough to be okay.

now i envision myself doing that, the stamp sliding out from under me, and me in the ER having to explain how i dislocated my (insert appendage of choice here). i've done that once, thank you very much, no need to embarrass myself again. i think my brayer poses less danger to my body and reputation. ;)
There was a thread about "butt" stamping a couple of months where you actually sit on your background stamp...well, I tried it (as silly as it sounds!) and it was the BEST coverage I ever got for a background stamp. I just put it on the coffee table and sat down...the kids thought I was crazy! :o)
Unless they changed the size of the canvas (I think I read somewhere the size of the BG stamps were larger in the new catty) there have been many threads about the canvas being too small. I know mine is. I love my canvas but HATE the fact it will not cover an entire card front. Good luck with your stamping.
My fail-proof method is to ink up a rubber brayer and run the brayer over the BG stamp. While the rubber side is still up, lay the CS onto it. Place a peice of scrap paper over the CS and rub all over. Perfect everytime!

I'd be right there with you trying to explain how I hurt myself. I just thought it was funny that everytime they talk about the large bkg stamps she says she stands on hers

Actually, all the background stamps are supposed to be 4 1/2 inches by 5 3/4 inches which is a quarter inch both ways larger than our standard card size. I've never had a problem with any of the SU! background stamps covering an entire card.
Also, I've found that the *only* way to get complete coverage on my background stamps is to use Lana's patented "Butt Stamping" technique. It works every time!!

This has become my method of choice with Canvas (my only BG stamp so far!). I have been using my bone folder (which I can't live without!) to rub over it and press it down. I think, ideally, I'd like a second brayer that I could use to press down (or just use the first one and consider this 'cleaning it')

Yup! "Butt" stamping is the only way to go! The first time I did it I got such good results that I'd never go back to my old ways!

I have had trouble also with some larger stamps. I have tought about using the card on top of the upside down stamp. I am wondering if there is trouble with the cs slipping and making a blurred image. Sounds like what would happen to me!
I have to say that I "stand" on mine also and get awesome coverage!
do you have someone there to spot you? just in case.
and as to the paper slipping, i mentioned above that when i put the cardstock onto the upside down stamp, i do very gently put my finger on it to stop it from slipping, then i brayer it. i may try the infamous butt stamping, hell i can probably do 4 or 5 stamps at once with this trunk! but i'm staying away fron the standing on it technique, due to inherent klutziness!
I have a stamping mat which goes underneath my cutting mat and it is about 3/4" thick. This seems to really help as the card gives a little. If anyone is interested I could probably find a site online to show you what they look like.

I am another "butt stamper"!!!! I got the idea from a previous thread here and I will never do it any other way again!! I use the brayer to in up the stamp. Put it on the cardstock and sit right on top of it for a few seconds. Perfect coverage every time!
Also if you use the "stickier" inks such as versa mark and the craft inks it seems like it covers a little better. Also I think because of the stickiness the cs doesn't slip when it's on top. Works for me anyway!

1. Use a rubber stamp foam pad, mouse pad, or something similar under your paper to be stamped and then press the inked stamp down
2. Ink the stamp with the rubber side up, lay the paper to be stamped on top of the inked stamp making sure to hold the paper in place to avoid blurring, and then rub or roll something over the paper, for example a brayer, bone folder, or press your fingers over the paper
3. Put the paper to be stamped on the floor, ink up the stamp and place it rubber side down on the paper, and stand or sit on the stamp
1. Use BRAYER to ink up BG stamp
2. With stamp facing up, put paper on top of stamp
3. Use boner or wooden part of another stamp to rub over paper.
4. You can lift up edges to peek if need more coverage!

that is word for word what i was going to say and exactly how i do it and it comes out every time. with canvas you can also tell (rubber side up) how much ink is going on too , so bonus!

I use a brayer to ink up my background stamps, but my canvas (which I have had since it was in the mini catalog) is NOT big enough to cover a normal card front, it will always leave edges, which would be fine if those "edges" were evenly spaced the whole way around. I find it is easier to use a front that is 1/4 inch smaller. Someone previously mentioned that SU would replace it with the new one which is supposedly larger, anyone have any experience with this? I haven't mentioned it to my demo.
My Canvas stamp is the new one, and it's huge. It more than covers the front of a regular sized card.
I did it the opposite way of how I normally stamp - putting the cardstock on top of the stamp, holding it with one finger, than rubbing all over. Worked much better.
LOL @chelseacat! No spotter needed! I am just very careful and stamp it on my bathroom floor which is vinyl. (and right next to my craft room, which is carpeted.)
The suggestion about a stamping pad does help. But I found that a mouse pad was too soft. I went to Wal-Mart and got a really cheap place mat. It has a thin layer of stiff foam and a smoth plastic surface.
I am going to have to try the "butt stamping." Golly you guys make me laugh!!
