Default TROUBLE UPLOADING SCANS

I scan my cards at 600dpi for uploads and have been doing so since I started posting in 2019. In the past few weeks I started to get a message that it exceeds the maximum limit. I lowered the scan to 400dpi and it took it the first time, but now I am getting the same "exceeds maximum capacity" message on that. Is this a system problem or a user (meaning me) problem. If a system issue, is this permanent or temporary. My photography skills suck and the scans look way better so I am hoping I can resume scanning. Thanks

We don't have file size limits, so it's probably a dirty cache - try clearing your browser cache and see if that helps.

Thanks Lydia. I cleared the cache but it didn't work. I still get the message "Exceeds Maximum File Size".

Thanks for your help Lyida. I don't know how to attach a file from my computer here since I don't have a URL so I sent it in an email. I really appreciate this.

I figured it out. It's the file format. My scanner is changing the format from jpeg to png even though the menu says it's scanning jpeg. It's the png format that's causing the problem. Now I have to figure out how to fix the scanner. Thanks again.

Just to say, I'm not 100% sure that's your problem. All my uploads are .png format, pretty much. I'll experiment with my scanner later and compare the file size of a card scanned at 600 dpi with a photo.

Thanks Sabrina. It’s so weird. All my previous scan have a jpeg extension and just the recent ones have png, which is when my problem started. Weird, when I scanned to test my theory I made sure the setting was jpeg but the scan turned out to be png. So maybe it’s my scanner.

Well, that's interesting.
A life-size scan at 600 dpi saved as a png comes in at over 19 mb which is pretty big, and I did get the "file size exceeds maximum limit" message.
But the same scan saved as a jpg came in at 4 mb - still larger than the photos I take but it uploaded no problems.
I don't think it's the file type that's the problem, though, it's more to do with the image size, because like I said I save almost all my photos as png because it's better quality with no compression.
So either something in your scanner settings or the site has changed - but I can say for sure that a scan at 600 dpi saved as a jpg should upload. There should be some setting in your scanner that will let you choose the default option.
Mine is so old that I don't know if the interface bears any resemblance to yours, but in the scanner driver there is a "save as type" setting. In fact, LOL, it doesn't even offer png - just jpeg, tiff or bitmap.

(My photos tend to be about 1.5 mb, for comparison. But I don't take them at the largest size available, because for cards it's certainly not necessary - I take high quality at a smaller size.) I know you said you're not as good at taking photos as scanning, but I think a photo tends to show dimension and layers so much better. I look back at my early scanned cards before I had a digital camera, and I can really see the difference. And not just because I've grown a lot in my cardmaking. .

Thanks Sabrina. There is some wonky mischief going on in my scanner because I saw jpeg was selected when I did my test scan, but it still scanned png. I went back and deselected jpeg and then selected jpeg again and it seemed to work. Might need something more permanent for the future, but at least I know what to look for now. And THANK YOU SO MUCH for doing that test for me. It does confirm there is a size limit and that possibly png on a scanner is bigger than png on your photos.

I have tried to scan and also take a photo and nearly every time, for me at least, the scan looked better -- at least the colors looked better for sure. I really am crap at photography. It's mostly lighting issues I think but what would I know????? LOL. Thanks again. Hugs.

I would have thought that the light in CA must be a zillion times better than our overcast grey days that are the norm here! I should have checked the number of pixels along each edge in the scan - I scale my photos down so that the longer edge is 1000 pixels.

There's actually a basic tutorial on tips for good photos in our Resources section: Photo Editing Tutorials at Splitcoaststampers
Sorry, I still call the Tutorials section Resources, because that's what it used to be called.

Thanks for the link. I have read that. My problem is either too little light or too much. I end up with lots of shadows that take away from the card. And, when I try to move it so the shadows disappear then it's darker and the colors disappear too. It truly is a "user" error here and I just need to practice to see what works best. I am working at this, though, for the Fan Club photos. I won't confess how many pictures and in how many locations I try to take my photos before I do upload but it's waaaaaaaaay more trouble than I want to go through for my weekly Gallery uploads. At least for now. Once I'm better at it, I might actually prefer it. Thanks for encouraging me...again...and for the helpful info. Hugs.
