As I was putting away Christmas stuff this weekend I found 3 boxes of Christmas cards from last year. I believe I got them for like 80-90% off at Hobby Lobby. Anyhow since I'm all about using what I already have this year, I wanted to see how I could incorporate them into my own cards.
So I tore the backs off the cards, die cut the sentiments with my stitched rectangles and tags. I also matted some with darker cardstock using just a bigger stitched rectangle/tag or a scallop. Not sure which way I like better. But I thought I could either use them as my inside greeting or even a focal point on my card.
Which way do you like better for an inside sentiment? Just the plain sentiment or one with a mat. I know if I use it as a focal point on the front, I'll use a matted one.
Great idea. I like matting for inside sentiments, personally. Unless it's a very simple CAS card front, in which case the matting wouldn't really match the clean style so well. But then I'd usually just stamp directly on the inside anyway. When I'm adding a stamped inside I would either mat it or add framing with a pen.
Super idea! I like the matted version on inside and front of card.

I like matted if the inside is white or cream, un-matted if it's a color. I will qualify that just a bit by saying that this is true if you're using a stitched die (or similar) rather than just a plain one...
This is such a good idea. I’ve got a bunch of cards laying around with good sentiments. I like the matted ones but I think the unmatted ones would be nice inside a colored cardstock card.
Loving this idea! I think I'm the only one so far, but for inside the card I like it un-matted with the stitched die. But I am sure they will look great both ways.
Great idea! I'm going to do this over the weekend and create a Christmas card kit for next year. I'll toss in bits of ribbon and bows, and other elements that I can pull off cards and wrapping. For the insides of your cards, I like the one that's the most plain, but they're all really nice. Thanks for the inspiration!
Something that I often do is emboss the edge of the sentiment for the inside or front mat with a finished (indented) edge. I use a rectangle die and an embossing tool. Easy to do and leaves a tailored and finished look to both the front and the inside of the card.
In the past, I've bought boxes of cards and used them as card blanks, as they already have the sentiment inside - you just need to adhere your own design on the front. If there was a really lovely element on the front which I wanted to use, I might be tempted to carefully remove it with a craft-knife before I added my design and then make sure I put in a thick insert so you couldn't see the missing bit!
Great idea! I was thinking I could do this with the store bought cards I received. I never thought of using their sentiments and die cutting and matting ahead of time! This is my downfall every year at the end; not having the insides done!
Thank you!
For the rectangle sentiment, I really like the unmounted version. I think it looks elegant. I have matted a stamped sentiment onto colored cardstock on the inside of the card to cover a stamping faux pas. LOL I'm almost always doing white on white and felt that it needed the color mat to make it look "intentional." Never thought to use a stitched die. I'm writing this down. If I don't, I won't remember it next time I need to do it. :(

I'm going through and using up my stash as well, using old inventory of embellishments, mulberry paper, paper pads, etc. It feels good using what I already have instead of rushing out to buy the latest products. Maybe I'll indulge in new product later in the year after the hype dies down and I use up what I have.
