I use a glue with a bit of “slip” and not very much of it! I think I have Elmers Glue It All on my desk at the moment, I apply a bit of that to the bottom die cut with a toothpick, put the next layer on top and nudge anything into place before pressing down gently and leaving it to dry. I think the trick is to run just a bit of glue down the middle of the lines of your shape so it doesn’t squidge out round the edges and leave smudges.
I use a opened up paper clip for tiny spaces and glue. Or a micro brush.
People use self closing tweezers to place the top on the bottom gently and then align it starting at one end. Good idea for me as I am the ham fist who would crush it accidentally before laying it down or drop it.....It may be a question of practice. I struggle too.
After applying glue to a word, i put the second die cut on top of the first one. Before the glue dries, I pick up the die cuts and holding the actual sides/edges with my thumbs and index or middle fingers - not so much the flat surfaces - push/fiddle into alignment.
IOW, even though we think of the die cut words as flat, they have sides - like a skinny children's book has a lot of surface, but has sides.
(I often use reverse tweezers to pick up the words with my right hand, transfer to my left put down the tweezers, and do the edge alignment thing.)
A glue that stays workable for a bit is needed, like Ranger's Multi Medium Matte or Collage Medium. I'm sure this is as clear as mud, right?! If you come over I'll show you. ;)
I use that blue pen like glue and just use the tiniest dots of it, and I do touch from the sides to wiggle it into place and then I stick one of my clear blocks on top to hold it.
I think a lot of the time why you see the glue after is if you touch it with your fingers it transfers the oil from your skin to the adhesive. if any glue blobs hit the project after it was glued in place I go over it with a Xyron adhesive remover square ( this is the best tool, yes I have bought most the others)
I saw a glue trick on a Tonic Studios video on YouTube. Allison from TS, was gluing together two really intricate dies. She said after she puts the glue on the first die, she 'runs' it over the top of her hand to get the gobs off and it smooths it out. She then puts it together and there's nothing coming out the sides or top...does this make sense? Of course, she has glue on top of her hand, but she wipes it off. Here is a link. OT - That reminds me of how Els - of Elizabeth Crafts Designs - actually applies glue. She puts it on the back of her hand and swipes the die cut into it. She said she learned it from someone in the UK, that it gets just enough and not too much. She uses "Kid's Choice Glue." I keep meaning to try it.
Here's a video where she does it at with an intricate die at about 5:50 and also at 7:00 - keeping the glue on her hand throughout. I couldn't quickly find one with a card but it's the identical method and sure seems to keep the amount of glue to a minimum yet with good coverage. (Btw on her blog she also has complete project sheet pdfs for her video tutorials.)
I put a scribble of glue down on my craft mat and lay the die cut down into it... I remember doing it on a tutorial video, but I can't remember which one!
