Hi and welcome from New Zealand! I felt the same way about stamping when I first started, my results seemed uneven, but do persevere. Have you gotten books on stamping/cardmaking from the library? They often have good tips for how to stamp correctly.

First-get a Stamp-a-ma-jig if you are having trouble with your stamps not going where you want them. That is my 'go to' almost every time I stamp something.
