Ribbon Storage? Lots & Lots of Ribbons!!

We all like to add our 2 cents worth, so here's your chance! ;)
I have become a ribbon junkie! :shock:
I have great jars lined up across my storage cabinets.
I have plastic Rubbermaid/Sterilite sweater boxes & plastic shoeboxes holding more ribbons.
And yes, I also have the easy-peasy zip-lock bags of similar ribbons stuffed within cabinets.
I never buy less than 3 yards. Most of my ribbons are 'not' on spools.
Like I said ... I have become a ribbon junkie!

So, how do you cope with "impressive" amounts of various ribbons?
Those of us who might be hoarding the stuff need to know!! ;)

I have a photo box--the ones you can get on sale at Michaels for about $3. On the long side, I have two rows of larger eyelets. My ribbon is inside, and I can just pull it as I need it, through the eyelets. I also have a rubbermaid container with it just dumped in. But since it's clear, I can see pretty well what's there.

Here's how I do it. wrap ribbon around card, adhere with masking tape. throw similar colors in zip loc bags. Here's a pic:

I am facing that same problem. I have 3 bags of ribbon, not including the SU ribbon I am trying to keep separate. When I use to have my own stamping room, I had peg board on the wall and merchandise pegs hanging on it with all of the ribbon hanging on them. They just slide right through the holes. Now that I don't have that (my husband overtook the room), and I'm going to get a different room, I saw some thing quite ingenious. Someone took and old drawer, drilled wholes on the end of it, put a small dowl through it and hung the drawer on the wall. It looks really nift. For the non-spooled ribbon: I wrap around clothespins and then they are in huge glass containers.

I have hundreds of ribbons, and I LOVE my storage methods. I have had it like this for years! I use the Cropper Hopper embellishment boxes (3 sizes) so they fit ALL sizes of ribbons. You can see my storage here.

I made a shelf out of foam board. I also make hair bows so I have a TON of ribbon. I keep/put them all on spools. I like this method because I can see them all at a glance.

One tip about storing ribbons is not to use rubber bands to secure the ends. Over time, the rubber will deteriorate and damage the fibers.

Most of my ribbon is in very large mason jars, spools of ribbon are stored on a CD type rack and I have baskets filled with ribbon that is in little balls (like you'd do with yarn).

I also like the boxes where you put the ribbon inside and thread it through holes and it doesn't get matted or tangled up!

I'm still a fairly "new" crafter, so I don't have as much ribbon to store. I started out by winding all of my ribbon on clothes pins but when i had a lot on one roll, I didn't like having several pins full of the same thing. So, when I have under 3 yards I wrap it on a pin and store it in glass jars (on sale at Walmart for $3.00)

If the roll is over 3 yards, I store it in this:

Im a total ribbon addict and I store mine in jars wound with tiny rubber bands.

I got cereal boxes and cut them in 2x3 inch squares. Then I wrapped a small piece of quilt batting around it (so it wouldn't leave crease marks on the ribbon) then wrapped the ribbon around the squares. I secured the ribbon with a very small (1/2 inch) applique pin. I then lined up the squares in a low drawer in a plastic storage system. Works great and didn't cost me anything!

I just got a ribbon ring back in late March. Was totally impressed by how much ribbon you can fit on that!! Just got a towel bar rod to hang the rings on. Now I need to convince hubby to help me hang it!

I have issue because when I went to the offray outlet, I bought an immense amount of ribbon, all 25+ yard rolls. Now, how does one store LARGE rolls of ribbon, over 95 large rolls or ribbon, lol. I had it organized with a system that worked, however, I lost my stamp room and now my system doesn't wok. Guess I need to go through and (gasp) get rid of some.

I use amazingpapergrace blog's system, except I cut my cards to fit in a floss box. It works so well for me. Takes up so little space and you can see at a glance what you have. I was using ribbon wrapped on clothes pins and in glass bowls. It looked beautiful, but I found it difficult to get to the color I wanted without dumping out the whole container.

Great tip about the batting.. hmmmm may have to try that!

i use amazinggrace's system as well.. except i cut mine out of plastic canvas. i use tape to put the ends on as the rubber bands were bending everything. maybe i just need a little big bigger of a rubber band.

I took me a few days to organize my ribbon, too. The whole time it was spread out all over my living room floor - which is NOT a smart thing to do with a kitten in the house. :sigh: My DH asked me how much I thought all that ribbon cost him and I lied and said that ribbon is SO cheap, which is why I have so much of it. I told him it hardly cost anything. lol

Anyway, I have a few systems for ribbon.

1. For spools that is a lot of yards (like more than 8 or so - I sorta eyeball it), I un-spool it and tie one end to a large binder ring. These are sorted by color and hung in the dining room behind my table (where I stamp). Usually, I have to cut the ribbon in a few pieces. The cat is ESPECIALLY partial to this system.

2. For less yardage spools (like the types you buy in the scrapbooking section of Joanns or the "specialty" ribbon), I un-spool them and wind them around two of my fingers and keep the ends together with regular Scotch tape. These are sorta stuffed into an extra large applesauce glass jar. I keep meaning to decorate it but it looks pretty cool without any decoration, if I may say so myself.

3. For new ribbon that I haven't had time to un-spool or deal with, I save the plastic "shell" boxes that the little baggies of pre-sliced apples come in. (I guess they could be described as super extra large clam shell boxes.) It perfectly fits about 10 or 12 standard spools of ribbon. I have about 4 of them right now filled up and with some spools just sitting on top so I've vowed to not buy anymore ribbon until I've done something about them.

So, those are my "systems". As I mentioned earlier, I stamp at my dining room table where we actually eat nearly every night so it's difficult for me to keep hostage. I swore I was going to remove the "ribbon rings" hanging from the wall when company comes over but I've never done that. And quite frankly, it's sort of a conversation starter - ie: "What's THAT?". lol

If you follow it like you should it's actually a really great system...it's all hanging like a rainbow when you first walk into my stamp room! But it's probably only 50% complete right now. ;)

I loved that idea but couldn't afford them so I made my own tabs out of plastic embrodery floss tabs I punched all the holes with the crop-a-dile, it took some time but I love being able to see all my ribbon at once and can grab a ring and take it to my work area. I think everything cost me about $7.00

Barb, is this effective for your formerly 'spooled' ribbons? Or are you only using it for your unspooled ribbons?

Very good idea! I was not that creative! ;)

I only use mine for my unspooled ribbon...I don't think I could bear to take them off the spools!

My ribbon is all in a huge basket, each rolled on a clothespin! There are pics in my gallery! The clothespins were at the dollar store. Inexpensive and easy!
