It's probably not hard to make something like that, but I can almost guarantee that you'd spend just about the same amount of money in purchasing all the different components you'd need. Then there's the time factor in putting it all together. I think you'd be better off saving yourself the aggravation and just buying the real deal, but maybe that's just me. ;)

Here's a link to instructions - you have to read thru some forum posts to get all the directions, but it certainly appears to be easy enough, and quite inexpensive:
I've also seen people who took the idea and used a straight dowel (hung from a shelf above it) and just put the clips on the dowel. I haven't gone looking for the clips, but I've heard they carry them at Target in the section with the curtains, and I also think someone posted that they found them at Ikea.

I made one using an old paper towel stand and an old lampshade. I bought both at a thrift store for $3 total. I found the clips at Ikea and also in the jewelry aisle at JoAnns. So it cost me about $7 all together. It does hold a lot of stuff. I haven't been able to figure out how to make it two-tiered, yet.
I have no idea where I saw this idea, or who the genius was that came up with it was, but...
This person used a tomato cage turned upside down (I guess, I'm not a gardener). Anyway she then found little clips but I don't remember the exact details of these. I think they were either from Ikea, or created from other office supplies. The clips were then used the same way as the real Clip it Up. I guess the part I was most impressed with was the tomato cage.
Maybe someone else here has seen this same idea and may have a kink to details and or pictures.
Please post your solution, I'm always amazed how creative people are.
I made one out of an old papertowel holder and lampshade, but since reading this thread I think I will make another one like this one: https://www.twopeasinabucket.com/pg....out_id=1216913
because it will hold more and the one that I made is already full.
The cost is not that much, but when I tried making one I could not find a lamp shade frame that was strong enoigh to hold the weight of all my embelishments.

I do not know anything about the clip it up, but the ribbon orgainzer/tray by the same company looks like it was made from a household gutters/rainspout material that was painted in black.
To answer your question about the lampshade wires.
We had to look high and low (seriously, it took a few days of driving from store to store) to find a lampshade that has the top and bottom pieces connected with a wire. We finally found some at KMart - so we travelled to the KMart in the next town to buy them out too!
The pole in the middle is actually a dowl that we bought and cut to fit, the base hubby cut from a 10 x 12 plank and the thing on the top is something that you normally put at the end of a curtain rod (I forgot the name). Then hubby took some washers to put in between that piece and the lampshade part so it does not rub or tilt. It will still tilt if you put too much on one side, anything would.
Once he has the dowl and base put together he paints it.
I love mine. It's a great place to store those clear stamps.
She walks you through it and even does a cost break-down of what it cost to make her version (a little over $10!) Now THAT'S what I call cost-effective. I, too, really would like a clip-it-up, but at the regular price I'd be willing to try and make the $10 version first and see how it goes.

the clips are in the drape/cirtain dept. they are the clips you would use on pleated drapes.
I would think you could use an Ikea towel holder like what we use to store our punches. Then make some sort of clip. The towel holder is very strong and should be able to withstand quite a bit of weight. Hummmm... now you all have me thinking. I have one laying around and will see what I can come up with. I will post a pic when I figure it out.
I use the Bygel Bar System from Ikea and have added an additional bar with the clips they sell in the picture area for my scrap ribbon. The bar is a bit thick so I bend the hook on the clips a bit attach and bend back they move freely though. HTH!

Yep! My DH made mine from these instructions and it rocks! He used an old brass lamp for the base and a found-on-the-side-of-the-road-lampshade.
The base is really heavy, it's the key to success along with two large rings to hang stuff on. For clips I use binder clips small and medium ones-take one side apart, hang the wire on the lampshade ring, put it back together. Easy.
I either hang my embellies directly on the rings or recycle packaging like clear envies or ziploc baggies.
You will love this thing no matter if you make it or buy it!
I did the hanging rod and clip thing...the total cost was about 6 bucks. I like the Clip it up idea, but need precious real estate, so this works better for my small space.
I knew I had seen this before -homemade clip it up. So a while back an old neighbor was moving and getting ready to throw out an old lamp shade, I kept it much to my DH's disbelief because I knew I would find this again and could go about making one myself. I just needed to find some instructions and now I have. Looks like I will be working on this for the weekend!

So I was trying out some different things here and there to come up with a cheap clip it up solution. Well this is just my first attempt, and I know it may be very generic but it is a step forward. Check out the link and let me know what cha think. I used a heavy hanger from target. I believe it is made out of brushed silver. It has a nice black rubber stopper on the top so it does not puncture anything. I wrapped ribbon around it. I left the bottom unwrapped so it would not come unraveled by the clip things.
It works fine. I can actually fit several hangers in my closet space. More hangers, more stuff!! LOL!!
What is nice is I can do the hangers by theme and when I need to pick something out I can just grab the hanger and bring it to my table. Easy as that.
Everyone is stating that the clips are in the jewelry department at J's. I am curious why J's puts clips in the jewelry deprartment?

I think that is a Great idea!! Maybe I will try that, i wonder if I can get "fancy" hangers somewhere. Or maybe wooden ones to paint? It seems easy to make and fast. No drilling! My kind of project.
