I like Ranger's Adirondack the best... no heat setting and nice clear images.
Ditto! I love Ranger's Adirondack Pitch Black and Ranger's Adirondack Espresso. I just bought two new colors yesterday too. They work wonderfully with Copics!

I tried staz-on with glossy paper, let it dry, and then tried coloring with the copics...didn't work. The black smudged. Maybe because of the alcohol in the markers. Good thing was, i scribbled on scrap paper with the marker, and the black came off. So there's what NOT to try! I think it would be ok on non-glossy, but i didn't try.

It smeared because StazOn ink is a solvent ink and it reacts with the alcohol in the Copics. We learned in class NOT to use StazOn at all with alcohol markers. (Even on regular cardstock.)

I use SU! Basic Gray or Basic Black on PTI white paper. I've never had a problem with smearing or bleeding.

Where can you buy the memento? Does Michaels carry it? I tried AC Moore, but they did not carry memento. I'ld rather find somewhere locas as I'm not a big online shopper.

I bought mine while traveling in Houston (I live in CA). It was a stamp store. Try a search online.
I had the same question so I went to my local stamping store and we used 3 different inks. Palette, Adirondack and Brilliance. Brilliance was the only one that didn't smear at all. I do have to heat set it, but I don't mind since it only takes a few seconds. I love it and it works great with my copics!
Palette Noir on PTI Ivory or White is great.
HOWEVER... I've recently found if you put a lot of color over the black without heat setting it will smear, even if it sits all night after you stamp the image.
I also like Brilliance Graphite... but no matter what I use I heat set it. I think I'm heavier handed than most with my copics or something.

I have Staz-On, Brilliance, Palette, Memento and Colorbox inks all in their respective black shades.
Don't even try Staz-On, it doesn't work. It's solvent-based and will run since Copics are alcohol-based markers.
I would only use Colorbox if I was planning on embossing the image prior to coloring it with Copics.
I've had great luck with Memento ink pads. Virtually no smudging. Dries very quickly. The only problem is that they're a bit harder to find. Once you have one, you'll love it.
Brillance works if you heat set it or let it dry for a very long time and don't have a heavy hand when coloring.
Palette also works for me. I love the really dark image that it produces. Dries relatively quickly despite the humid weather that we've been having around here lately.
They are alcohol based artist quality markers that come in a billion colors LOL (really, like 300). Some people use Sharpies or Bic Markits instead--but my experience is that the inks smear more with these (even the inks others are using with Copics successfully), so I think there is a difference in quality.

HTH!
I wouldn't recommend this...the alcohol solution in the markers will eat away the embossing.
I use one of three different inks: momento black, palette noir, and brilliance graphite black. (I have heard great things about adirondack, but I've never tried it.) I heat set with palette and brilliance, but don't have to with momento. However, I prefer brilliance because it is a very dark black where momento is a little gray. I use both, though. Momento is great for when I don't have time or feel like heat setting.
I only ever use Brilliance Graphite Black when coloring with Copics. I don't heat set it and I've never had an issue with it smearing at all. I'd love to try the Memento but have yet to find it in a store...
who sells memento? I have never seen it in a store. I know mike's doesn't have it. Archivers maybe? I tried ebay, no luck. I just bought a brilliance, can't wait to try it!

SU basic Black is what I use! Did you know that you can use Bic Mark-it or Sharpie markers with a Prismacolor colorless blender marker if you don't have copics. See my tutorial here: http://thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.com/page/2/
Its a good affordable alternative!
I was just perusing through this forum to get info on which is the best inkpad for Copic usage and I personally like Tim Holtz Distress Ink in Black Soot. I first started using StazOn and quickly realized that didn't work! I have not had any problems with the distress ink - I usually stamp my image out first and then do the rest of the card - my nesties mats, etc. and then lastly color image and I'm done!
Sometime back I started a thread for a universal black ink that could be used with Prismas, Copics, etc. Maybe you can benefit from it so here's the link: Forums at Splitcoaststampers
