I also stay in stealth mode. Lots of people here know me in real life. Some of them don't mind making me miserable, unfortunately. I was being threatened a few days ago by a mysterious "new" poster, but that seems to have passed. LOL I think most people who really know me know to go ahead and send a pm. I'm in and out of SCS all day--and night. :-)
You can still tell if someone is using invisible mode or not...so, it might not be our business, but we'll still know!
If you are using invisible mode, nothing will show up in the upper right of your profile.
If you're not using invisible mode, the upper right will either tell us what you're looking at (if you're on), or when you were last on SCS (if you're off).
As for the people who use invisible mode while at work to "hide" from IT...you're not "hiding" from IT...you're hiding from other SCS users. IT people can see EVERYTHING. And by everything, I mean *everything!* (You should hear some of the things IT has found!)
You don't have an option for me - I do both. I went invisible for awhile - mainly because I go through spurts where I'm on SCS several times a day and am embarrassed how often I'm here. I recently went visable for a silly reason - I noticed I was a couple posts short of 3,000 and wanted to see if I could graduate from Pear-Ex Pert to something else. About 18 posts later I realized that posts aren't tracked if you're invisible so I went visible so I could graduate to Die Cut Diva, lol!
Is it true that people can actually track what post I'm reading? That's kinda weird - so if it's true, I may 'disappear' again. I've nothing to hide, but because of a creepy experience with another website years ago when I first got on the computer, I learned to be cautious. I only added my signature last month and I keep Barbie's face pasted over my own. Can a person really 'stalk' and find out what another person is reading or doing here?
Not true.
Otherwise, I wouldn't have half the posts I do. ;)
And yes, I use invisible mode. No, it isn't to hide from an employer (I'm a SAHM).
Like Christine, I've been using "invisible" mode for quite some time. I often leave my computer on SCS all day long, and didn't want it to look like I spent my whole day here, LOL! I also had a really bad experience on a popular chat thread that led me to stop posting there (nearly left SCS for good, but another member of the chat convinced me to come back after about a month) and I didn't feel like having the nasties from that thread be able to see where I was browsing.
But you see me every 4th Monday, Jimmi, so I guess it doesn't matter! ;)
Ditto for me why I use invisible mode. That was my exact experience too, Rachel. :(
I would not use internet at work to surf this site or others for personal use. That said, making yourself invisible does NOT keep your IT group or company from knowing where you are surfing the web and how long you are there. There are standard tools which are readily available and used by most IT groups to monitor surfing. This is done mostly to ensure no improper use.
Might get backlash but IMHO, surfing the internet while on the clock is like stealing time from the company. Most companies have policies restricting personal use during work time. That said-it is no different to me than someone who spends lots of time on phone making personal calls.

Why are y'all embarrassed to be here?????
If you love SCS shout it from the rooftop and wear your SCS t-shirt proudly
Personally I am not embarrassed of anything I do
I am an addict and proud of it:mrgreen:
And lucky to work where I work and be able to be on the internet all day if I choose to. My boss even comes up to see what those "stamping people" are talking about now;)...and I work for a very large corporation.

My boss doesn't really care as long as I get my work done. In fact he surfs the internet quite a bit too during the slow time of day. I am salaried, however and am expected to work from home as well (on-call several nights a week) so I guess I just consider it my "comp" time.
I am visible- I am on here a lot- and in fact I probably look like I am on here more than I really am because I don't always close my browser window. (I live alone- why bother??)
Definitely personal choice, but I personally don't think anyone should be EMBARRASSED about how "often" they're on SCS!! There are ALWAYS people who stay logged on more than YOU do!!! No one knows about me anyway, because either I FORGET to log out half the time, or my computer locks up for some reason and I CAN'T log off!! The only reason I can think of that I WOULD do invisible is if I needed to go to a secret sister-type forum or thread with only a few people on it, and I didn't want that person to know I was logged on so I wouldn't accidentally say something to give myself away if that person tried to "talk to me" online, or if I'm trying to read and print their wishlist! Being in a hurry or not wanting to be bothered by another user if you're busy or just in a bad mood would be a good reason, though! I'm sure a lot of mods go online "invisible" all the time when they're monitoring!!

I'm usually invisible. I don't work so there is nothing to be concerned about in that area. However, I do a lot of volunteer work and very quickly I can be drawn away and I don't continually log off with each call or every time I head out the door. More often than not, when I am logged on, I'm really not here.
I'm a SAHM and log on when I get up in the morning and then visit here and there throughout the day. Sometimes I forget to log off and I'm on all night. It would appear I'm almost always on. I figures no one would really notice or care...

Well put! As Popeye would asy, "I am what I am!" LOL :-P
Okay, after reading all your posts, I'm not so embarrassed anymore. Thanks for the therapy. :-) Thought I was the only one prone to run off all day and come home to see I'd left an SCS page up on the computer. And not only that but I also feel guilty about wasting energy when I forget to shut down. What can I say, guilt comes so easily, lol!
That said, after having a guy on another site track down my home address and phone number (and I thought I'd been careful!) and call and send stuff, I'm still more comfortable being invisible. That was a creepy experience and after that, I'd rather be extra careful online. (And my DH concurs.) Although everyone seems nice and fairly normal ;) I learned that all it takes is one who isn't to shake up your world. So, though I'm not embarrassed so much at my addiction to this place, I still want to make like Casper and disappear and if that makes me odd, well, maybe I am. :-) To each her own.
Aside from maybe a real stalker like April mentions...I could care less who knows I am on and for how long. But I am completely baffled by this bullying and threatening thing. What is that? What do people say? I can't even imagine. People can do that to you online?! So many people have mentioned it..is this a growing problem?

I've seen it happen when people group up and then someone within the group disagrees and basically someone gets upset and then just makes life a misery for them on the board. It really isn't nice, and I have seen people gang up - I actually thought I left this sort of behaviour high school, but apparently some people never grow to respect that everyone has a valid opinion whether you agree with it or not.
LOL, there were so many possibilities to this thread just by the name! I was so curious I had to take a peek!
I am always visible, never thought the "need" for invisible. I didn't know that people could "stalk" me while I was on, but honestly I don't think I am "stalk worthy" so it still won't change my visibility.

I think it's more of the "troll" types we get here~
There are a few trolls that keep getting new ids and like to come in and stir up trouble, and then there are regulars here that like to do it as well!
I haven't seen bullying/threatening, I have only seen pot stirring. People who just *love* to come in to certain threads (usually SU related) and cause conflict.
I with Jimmi~ I am not ashamed of what I do, nor embarrassed. I also will leave SCS on all day and actually use other tabs around it as well to check other sites.

I don't think people are referring to trolls (at least Rachel and I aren't). These are long-standing members of this community, and it isn't in the GST forum, either.
And yes, as a previous poster said, we all thought we left that type of behavior behind in junior high...not so, apparently.

I will remain visible unless the witness protection plan comes into effect!
I have no need to hide, I'm not that interesting to be stalk-worthy. Stalkers beware - you're wasting your time on me!
I DO pretend not to be home when the doorbell or phone rings - probably because I don't want to be disturbed while I am here on SCS!!! ;)

 on the door/phone thing - I actually turned this "invisibility" thing on a charity - they kept ringing the house when I had quite a few urgent things going on and kept their i.d. secret on the caller i.d. - I told them that if they were legitimate charity that there is no need to hide their identity and that I didn't give my time nor money to organisations that behaved deceitfully - they took us off their call list!

I was being more specific about Amysings occurrence just the other day when referencing trolls.
I am pretty sure we all think it's high school behavior, none the less it does manage to occur here. Especially the pot stirring. Like Jimmi said, it also happened to her.
This is actually the reason I stay out of certain types of conversations. ;)
I personally find it very wrong to be using company time on SCS.
Well then you'll really hate me! The only time I get to visit this site is at work because I don't have internet at home. My workload is set up so that I have a lot fo set up first thing in the AM, then data analysis late afternoon. If I couldn't come here between 9:30 and 3:00, I'd go mad!
Personally, I don't see anything wrong with it. It doesn't interfere with my work at all. I still get the things I need to get done....done. But then, I'm very much a live and let live kind of person, so things pretty much roll off of my back.
That said, I'm invisible because I'm a big proponent on privacy. It just feels weird to know that anyone could know exactly what thread I'm reading. And I"m not a big honcho or popular or anything like that. It's just my own quirk.

You were just reading this thread;) LOL
I agree about the net at work thing, as long as your company/boss is cool with it and you get your work done then it is fine and none of my beez wax
Sometimes I have literally 7 hours of absolutely zilch to do so I get to brwose SCS the entire time, like today

What an interesting topic! It actually inspired me to stop lurking and log on. For the past year or so I've only hoped on occasionally and usually only visit as a guest. I used be on 24/7, participate in challenges daily and chat frequently but it started to seem like some of the other participants in the chat thread I visited intentionally made me feel 'visible'. I had no 'run ins' but started to see people becoming less and less welcoming. Sometimes it does feel like high school around here and i just made the decision to stop logging on (except for the 15th to see the DD gallery of course!!!!) I don't even upload my stuff anymore but that may be due more to a lack of time. That PT admin assist. job for my pastor is way more than PT!!! anyway...after reading some of your posts it made me feel less alone in my perception of things around here sometimes. I still love the site and enjoy all that it offers. thanks for the therapy!
To answer the question, when I've logged on it has always been visible, didn't know invisible was an option.
Joyce, I see you! Your post sounds so sad........ :(
And Charla that's why you could never truly be invisible; you're too kind.
I think all of us have felt the sting of being 'ignored' on different threads and you know we might all of us be guilty of that same thing without ever intending to be rude. Just remember how many times you wished you could reach through the computer screen to give someone a hug who's having a hard time and couldn't . . . computers don't always translate things well.
I went invisible for a time when my feelings were really hurt by something and just wanted to lurk . . . but then decided it wasn't worth it to allow someone I don't even know in person to spoil what for me has become my playground and a place to find friends.

posts ARE tracked if you're invisible. i've been invisible for a long tie now and my count keeps going and going and going!:p

Ok so I don't think I'm invisible. (Posting to see) Usually I forget to log off when I leave my computer so it looks as if I am ALWAYS here! I've had nothing but good times here. But then i don't ususally let myself get into any discussion where my opinion will cause an uproar. No need to walk into a fight! I am a chicken!
I m so sorry that some of you are having trouble here with ppl, i have met nothing but lovely friendly ppl here myself..
Is there a way to make these ppl who are rude and just not a nice bunch public?
i mean there not going to be tolearated that some are doing thiere best to ruin the loving place this is......
we have to make this stop somehow.
