A book thong that I have is a length of jute twine (the stiff stuff that SU sells in looped lengths) with fancy beads at top and bottom. The twine goes in the book and the beads anchor it in place. What makes these beautiful is the bead work - it's a great way to showcase an unusual beads that you don't have many of and they are quick to make.
I don't have a poem or anything that came with mine. It just said it was a book thong and I knew what it was for by looking at it! ;)
HA-HA, a book thong is a bookmark made with beads or stamped images and or charms at each end. I saw them in a catalog or somewhere with a cute poem that said something like " if you thought this was a necklace, you were wrong--look closely, it's actually a book thong!" You loop it around on a cardfront. As soon as I get the poem and get these done, I'll put them in the gallery.
They are beaded bookmarks or book thongs (you know, goes in the 'crack' of your book). There are a few different ways to make them. I teach after school beading classes and they are great for kids to make. Here are a couple websites with pictures.
They make great inexpensive gifts. I made them for teachers one year, included the poem (which lets them know what it is) and a Borders gift card. They loved them!
You can also use the plastic letter beads to spell out a name, favorite team/sport, etc. and add a fun charm to the end. The possibilities are endless!
Thanks for the sites Melissia, but do you have a copy of the poem? I really wanted to put it with these before I post them...thanks again to all the help.
I have searched the net with no luck. They were plentiful about 2 years ago. I had at least 6-8 saved on my computer. UHG! They were great ones too. Some a little naughty/funny and others just informative.
When you need to mark a book,
And go along your way,
This lovely little book thong,
Will hold your spot all day.
Just read until you've finished,
And what do you suppose,
Open up that book real wide,
And in the crack it goes!

I'm an educational G-string
Used solely for a book,
Please don't try to wear me,
You'd get a funny look
These strings help pages open,
the crotch upon the spine,
And so I'm really hoping
you find this gift divine!

What is a book thong?
Take a look.
A fashion accessory
For your favorite book.
Not for your foot -
That would be silly!
Not for the body -
Way too chilly!!
Just slip over the pages,
Along the spine.
You will find your place
Every time.

This little thong
will mark your spot,
in your book
not your butt.
Much more comfy
yes indeed
than the ones that cut you,
guaranteed.

Oh, thank you so much, these are just what I was looking for!! Each one is perfect for the different people that I'm making the thongs for. Again, thanks for the help, you gals on SCS rock :0)
Just what I need...another hobby but wow, I'm just totally inspired by what I'm seeing surfing around. Do any of you have samples of what you have done along these lines with stamping supplies? I'm having a hard time envisioning how you would do that.
Yeah, now that we know the poems (and they are so cute) anyone want to share how they are making the thongs themselves. They would just make cute little gifts!
Thanks for the poems! I looked for hours and couldn't find them.
There are a few different ways of making these. You can use waxed linen (found in the jewelry making section). Cut about 20 inches, tie a knot on each end about 8-9 inches apart (this part will lay between the pages). Put whatever beads you are using on each end, leaving enough string to tie at the ends. This is more than enough string and you will probably have to cut some off. I usually have about 2 inches on each end. You can also put a charm on the end if you want too. This is a great way to personalize them.
The other way is to use beading wire. I use either the 7 or 21 strand wire. Cut about 12 inches of wire, using seed beads, bugle beads or a combination of both bead about 8-9 inches on to the wire. Put tape on one end to keep them from falling off. Now bead your focal beads on each end and use crimp beads/tubes to finish off. Again, you can put a charm on one end (or both).
I realize some of the terms may not be familiar but if you browse the bead section at HL or Michaels you will see what I am talking about.
HL is having a great sale that ends today on jewelry items. Michaels is too.

Here's what I did for a swap. I used designer paper and made the beads. For the charm I stamped on shrink plasic, colored with pastels, and then painted crystal effects over it to seal the chalk. Hope this helps.
I love the poems and sayings. They will be perfect as I am wanting to make some for Christmas this year.

I'm glad ya'll liked it. The beads were pretty easy to do too. The large beads are made of 1/2" X 4" DSP and the smaller beads are 1/4" X 4" DSP. The larger the piece of paper the thicker the bead and the wider the piece of paper the longer the bead. I used removeable adhesive on one end and then "taped" it to the end on a needle and started to wind it. When I was done winding the paper into a bead, I sealed it with some mod podge (just a small bit that was on the end of my finger). I so hope that makes sense. I did these as I watched tv to help me relax.
Just returning from a trip and I'm tickled to see all of the additions, thanks so much for the interest. I will try to post the ones that I've finished, but have not put the poems with them yet. Yes they are quite addictive! :0)
Thanks to everyone for poems, pictures, directions, etc. I just made 15 of these using beads in school colors to give to my daughter's high school cheer team which will have their end of season lunch tomorrow. My daughter will probably go to college in CA next year. What excuses will I have to make so many cute things and for whom? Can you tell empty nest syndrome is already here!I have no regrets because I have treasured every moment!
bumping because these are so cute and easy to make! I made 4 within an hour last night and made some cute graphics in paint shop pro with the poems to print out and use to put the thongs on them! I need to take pictures!
This is an old thread, just wondering if anyone has anything else to add? More poems, directions, ideas, tips? I have quite a few people I need to gift at the end of the colorguard season and these would be hilariously perfect.
