TOP 50 BLOGS
Hi All!
I love looking at blogs (and not just the TOP 50 ones). But I am a wee bit curious. Who in the crafting world has the number 1, 2 and 3 spot? Does anyone know? I am soooo curious!!!!!

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think SCS is #1...I mean yes, this site is #1, but I believe it is #1 in the "rankings" as well...
you can check out www.stampingtop50.com if the site is working correctly you should be able to view all the sites that are signed up to be ranked...
eta - yes, SCS is listed as #1...the first blog listed is Debbie Olsons at #6...

A computer does. When you install the Stamping Top 50 badge on your website, it tracks how many visitors you get each day and sends that info back to the Stamping Top 50 website. Then it creates the ranking based on those numbers. The site with the most visitors wins!

The STamping Top 50 is calculated by hits, longevity etc. by computer. It is the top list of stamping sites that have applied to be part of the group. SCS is the top stamping site...yahoo! Of course, we all knew that already! LOL
The stamping site can also be stamp companies that sell products and are not just blogs. I'd also like to say...that while Stamping top 50 is great...there are so many fabulous blogs out there that are nowhere near the top 50, just because many people have not found them yet.

I agree there are a lot of bloggers who don't even put themselves on the top 50 list. There are so many great bloggers out there, O love looking at people's blogs it's addicting....LOL

If you want to more blogs and websites that are on the Stamping Top 50, just go to anyone's blog who has the logo and click on it. It will take you to the main site with the rankings. It's a mix of blogs, stores, websites, etc...
One time when I went there, I ended up finding tons of new blogs (new to me) and websites that I didn't even know were out there. And of course when you go to one blog, you start clicking on their blogroll and then their blogroll and it's like getting lost in the city, you don't know where you'll end up but it's all a great time! LOL!
Some bloggers put themselves on that site so they can keep track of different statistics for multiple reasons. It's a good resource for that kind of thing. And some bloggers like moi, choose to keep their numbers hidden on their blogs so it's not showing to their readers. It's called "private stats." But I found out that you can still see their ranking if you go to the Stamping Top 50 website. I only made it private so it wasn't a distraction to me. LOL!
Hugs,
Gina K.

I think it's cool when you frequent someones blog to see how high up they rank, (if they have the top 50 logo on the blog) Although just because some blogs rank way up there in the top, they aren't always my favorite ones. I have so many blogs that I read, sometimes I think I need to run and hide from the computer so I can actually get something done. LOL

I just wanted to add some "fun facts" about the "stamping top 50". It is not tracked on Stats/visits alone; the number also rises if more people click out to stamping top 50 from your link... you bring traffic to their site and they reward you with points. I have seen a drop in my numbers when I lower the tag on my blog to a place where it not being viewed/clicked on as often. I also saw a rise in the numbers when I disabled the counter from being visable on my blog. More people clicked on it when I did that vs. when I didn't... unsure why.
http://crazyegg.com is a cool tracking tool that lets you see where your readers actually click on your blog... it can help you determine where your readers are "looking" and then you can change features acordingly. So if you add a widget to your sidebar you can "see" if anyone actually clicks on it... or if it's just a gadget that is slowing down your upload time.
ALSO; it does not just track visitors; but page loads... the difference being; if one person visits your site, clicks on a link in your blog, leaves, comes back, clicks on another link; leaves/comes back... it's tracking that as if 3 "hits" were made... when in reality it was 1 person visiting. This is how most visable "counters" work as well.
"Stamping top 50" also is not tracking your email and google subscribers. Unless you only publish a partial feed that forces your readers to visit your blog to read the full posts.
I use http://www.statcounter.com and the statistics I get to view show me a more accurate representation than "stamping top 50" does. "Stamping top 50" is more of a web ring than a stat counter.
For example; While Stamping top 50 states that I have had 608 views today.. I have really only had 280. Plus my statcounter tracking shows me who is clicking and where they discovered my blog; letting me know who is linking out to me today. This can help me determine also when I get a sudden "run" of hits... like if someone in a yahoo group, or sudsol has posted a link to my blog.

I actually found the stats on Top 50 to be inaccurate. I was blog hopping and noticed that someone's rank number was the same as mine and when I went and looked at Top 50 we weren't the same. I figured it was an updating glitch but it was like that for a week. Considering Top 50 doesn't return emails and I have found a lot of links on the site (not the blog links...others to their own pages) don't work I wouldn't put too much into their stats. I think it is a bunch of hype to make people feel good about their blogs and a way for Top 50 to get some sort of advertising incentives. JMHO.

So...question. If you visit someone's blog via Google Reader and are not accessing their site completely, will it be counted as a "hit" with most site counters or does it depend which counter you are using?

it depends on the counter. Or if you publish and open feed or not.

In my case, none of my subscribers count as hits for me because when they open my entry in their email, it doesn't access my site. Because of those subscribed, I lose about 2500 or so hits everytime I post a new entry because those people get it right in their mailbox instead of having to access my site. But thats okay. I'm glad that the readers who want to be updated are able to get this info in a convenient way.
And, I think we are all talking about two different Top 50 sites! LOL!
The blue banner Stamping top 50 only goes by hits, not click in or out of their site. The pink banner stamping top 50 counts clicks in and out of their site to bump you up.
Hugs,
Gina K.

My blog is the same with work colleague as there's 4000 colleagues here but it only registers through 2 gateways as 2 visitors even if all 4000 looked at once!

And I thought the blue one worked as I described and the pink one STARTED you at the top and then you slowly fell and rose back up again... Thay pink one is so weird! Sometimes I was number one... sometimes I was much lower... I removed myself from it.... I should remove myself from the other one too... I never get hits from it. Where does it say how it actually works?

I always thought (probably read somewhere) that the Top 50 (blue and yellow one) was based on the number of "unique" visitors - so even if 1000 people went to your site each day, if they had all been there before it wouldn't do diddly for your "rating"...maybe we will never know exactly!!!

That's exactly how it works except is means unique visitors within a 24 jour period. It zeros out again at midnight and starts over.
I think I will ditch the pink one too. It really tells you nothing other than how many times someone clicks in and out of the pink site, not the blog. Well, it tells you how many clicked in and out of the blog, but it doesn't rate the site based on that. KWIM?

that's good to know - that it "refreshes" every 24 hours...I thought once they visited that was it, they were no longer counted, so to speak. It would be nice if the sites were a little more informative/explanatory so that we know what it is we're signing up for...other than that...I can't complain!

Some sites offer blogs free of charge and others have different price packages, depending on your needs and desires.
I use Typepad, because after I researched it all, even tho they charge a fee, it's very nominal ($4.95 per month, after the first free month trial period), and they have an excellent help system built-in right online, with speedy response by staff if you can't find the info you need in the help system, and I liked all the features they offer (separate photo albums for sorting artwork, etc., and nifty new widgets they're always making available, even if I don't understand 'em all or can't quite figure out how to get them to work, LOL!).

My .02:
I wish EVERONE would list their sites with Stamping Top 50 (and others like it) if they're relevant. Why?? B/c I think it's time for the "powers that be" to see just how much this industry has grown over these past few months (and I hope it keeps growing!!).
After reading that article calling the stamping/scrapbooking industry "dowdy" (among other things - blech) I think that it's only right that all stamping bloggers/online stores/stamping info sites/etc etc etc get their sites listed (if they already haven't) ASAP!!
For me it's not about the competition - I visit the Top 50 site fairly often and scroll through and just click on sites here and there. I've found some AWESOME sites that way!!
I understand what others are saying about not wanting to "feed" the competitiveness and all that (I too keep my stats private on the Top 50 - b/c I really don't care (too much!) about the exact # of hits and all that - that AND the fact that I still don't fully get HOW they come up with their reasoning on whose site ranks where......) but at the same time I don't think that should even be the issue.
Just check out the Scrapbooking Top 50 site and you'll see how many sites are listed there (well over 1000!!) - which is fabulous!! I WISH Stamping Top 50 had that many! Hopefully someday soon they will..............

I assume that for business related websites, that in order to secure advertisers, they do need some sort of "ranking"--to convince advertisers that their dollars are well-invested, due to the popularity/traffic, etc. In other words, that along with saying you're the most popular, you have some sort of ranking evidence that backs it up.
I only listed mine with Top 50 because I was familiar with it as a well-known, centrally located "directory" of stamping related websites, UKWIM?
For the same (centrally located directory) reason, I asked to have mine listed at Michelle Laycock's Splitcoastbloggers.com site.

I couldn't agree with you more. I'm no where near the top 50 on my blog. I love going through the end of the list as well as there are so many great blogs to check out that aren't anywhere near 50 and under. I *love* to blog surf though. lol!

I love everyone's blogs. I like seeing my "top 50" number go down. (had to check though and make sure I had blue and not the dreded pink) I like to think I'm popular! heehee. I'm a big, "If that's your blog you do whatever you like on it" person. I only because aware of blogs when Amy R came on another site and had a blog link, I was like, "what's this??" then "ohmyheck that is the most adorable thing EVER, I want one!!!"
And that's how I feel about this issue. (I'm trying to be more active here on SCS so pretend you know who I am an care what I think please ;))

I read on a Yahoo Group that both Top 50 sites are run by the same people. Why do they need two?
