Okay, I didn't have time to read all the posts but in case it wasn't mentioned, here is what I do to help. I precut all my paper. I don't use the perfect layers thing unless it is a shape my cutter can't do because I feel it wastes too much paper.
If you hold your paper on opposing corners (like top right and bottom left), you can see the margins better. I hope that makes sense. It seems to help me get all four sides even.
Sometimes, I think it is your eyes! I have a dominate right eye and I notice that it will look even one way but when I turn it upside down it looks off. Hmmmmmm?

OMG. It has never occurred to me to hold the top layer in that fashion and it makes PERFECT SENSE!

What helps me (and I can't explain why) is to hold diagonal corners and visually match edges. If you are pretty confident you are cutting straight - it does help. JMO.

This is what I do, and it seems to work...if I'm having a good day! If I'm having a bad day, nothing can save my cards!
I've been wondering if Perfect Layers would be a good investment for those days! If I'm wasting cardstock, I might as well be successful at with it, kwim?
Just watched the video at Creative Keepsakes. WooHoo!!! I think I can save the price of Perfect Layers tool and get one of those gridded rulers instead.
So... I went out and got one at Michael's. It is great. I lay one of the red lines (eight inch or quarter inch) along the fold of the card and slide my layer right up to the ruler. I have NEVER BEFORE had straight layers.
Well, now you have done it - touched on a very sore spot with me - uneven layering. So, after reading all the above posts, I did it! I ordered a Perfect Layers tool. I will let you know the results.
Another vote for mono-multi adhesive. It gives you some "wiggle time" before it dries and it totally saves me. I have the perfect layers tool but have never used it. Once I got my mono-multi I didn't need it anymore!
Thanks for the opposite corner thing and I guess I could use my quilting acrylic square to line up to the fold. These soun really neat. Sometimes I think I don't notice the bad paper cut until I've put the layer down well. Now that's really annoying.:mad:
I have difficulty as well, Joan, but not usually with narrow margins; I can trim those on my 12" Fiskars very well, but, it took me like 10 years to nail it :oops: When I started, there were no Perfect Layers . . .
I seem to have the most trouble when I'm mounting a smaller focal image and there's like a 1-2" margin all around.
I can NEVER get it on dead-center! Drives me !!!!!!!!
Anybody got a solution for that????
I know that in part, it may be due to the fact that I *desperately* need a new eyeglass prescription . . . they told me I needed bifocals . . . I've been stubborn . . . for the last 3 years . . . snort!
Julie, the bifocals won't help, you'll just end up taking them off like I do most of the time,lol.
My hubby says my crooked layers are my signature on the card, he said it's how he knows which card is the one I made ( He said it lovingly, I'm sure ! )
I always think my layers are even until I see it blown up on my computer screen after I've uploaded a picture of my gard to my Gallery. Then I cringe. I like the Mono Multi glue idea. Sometimes I put my layers down with my Mono adhesive and it is stuck so well that I have to pry it off with my bone folder and sometimes pull off some of the layer below all to get a straight layer. Lots of wasted time doing that. Thanks for all the good ideas.
Hmmmmmmmm! I'm a clear ruler fan ... but even that doesn't mean these eyes will get it close on any given day. I also like to use curves or circles, and can spend way too long on trying to get it right. It's been enlightening to see so many positive comments on the Perfect Layers! I'll be giving that some consideration in the future!
I received the Perfect Layering Tool - this is the greatest invention since sliced bread. I wish I had known about this one years ago. At any rate, thank you to everyone on this thread for telling me about it.
