Attention all participants in the Think Pink Challenge!!
I was pretty late in posting to the thread in Think Pink and was thinking that many of you would miss my post so I thought I would try posting here and in the RAK forum as well:
I have a favor to ask....since it is Breast Cancer month, I would like to tell you about my neighbor. She is very young. 26 years old, and was just diagnosed with a very aggressive breast cancer. She has already begun a very aggressive kemo treatment program and has had a bad reaction to the kemo as it actually stopped her breathing on two occasions. They had to completely change the type of treatment and she seems to be doing better with the new treatment. She is also going through gene testing right now and is probably looking at a double mastectomy and complete historectomy. They are fairly sure because of the aggressiveness of her breast cancer that she carries this much dreaded gene. Luckily she has twins (2 years old) and another daughter so at least they were done having children. Being so young, I am glad she does have her children. She just had to have her head shaved and had a awful time with that.....When I saw genie1314's card I immediately thought of her and thought maybe I should post a RAK request. Especially since we are making pink cards. I wanted to post this right away and I don't have her address with me but I will post it here as soon as I get it. I know she would appreciate some wonderful cards in the mail to brighten her spirits! So if you do not have a recipient in mind for the card you made for the challenge, I know my neigher would greatly benefit from it.
My dear, sweet friend, Annette, was diagnosed with breast cancer at 28 when she was pregnant with twins. She did the whole chemo-masectomy-radiation thing. She was "clean" for five years, at which point the cancer returned in the form of brain tumors. She was gone by the age of 33. I HATE this disease! Let's all participate on this one! Any form of "cheerleading" will really brighten her day!!

Thank you so much for your comment! I am so sorry about your friend. That is one story I will not relate to my neighbor. It is a very, very sad thing. When I talk to her it is like talking to an 11 year old. She is so petite, young and childlike! I am turning 50 this year and I look at her and think how much living she has ahead of her. I hope that her outcome is different than your dear friend. Thanks for being so caring!

I will send a card for sure. This is horrible. I did the 40-mile, 2-day Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Denver this past June with my pal jmecker. It was a life-changing experience. My thoughts and prayers are with Eliza and her family!

I will be happy to send my card to your neighbor. I have had two immediate experiences with cancer -- one ended happily, the other not so happy. As I mentioned when I posted my card, my mom had a mastectomy 25 years ago, and is still going strong at 87. She's in an assisted living facility due to other reasons, but the cancer has never returned. The unhappy experience was with my husband, who died of lung cancer three years ago -- three months after he was diagnosed. Cancer is an ugly disease; but, hopefully through research, it will be licked.
I'll send my card out today! My best wishes to your neighbor for a recovery.
Thanks for the info. I'll get a card in the mail. My aunt is also going through this and just lost her hair last week. I'm also sending her out completed Christmas cards so she doesn't have to worry about that this year. Maybe you could also collect those for your neighbor. I would love to send her some.

What a great idea! At this time of year that would be a huge task off her mind! Thank you for that! I hope your aunt is doing well. I would be so happy to send her a card....could you pm me her address?
My mother was diagnosed 4.5 years ago & has been 'clean' for 4 years this month. She was amazing during her treatments, never let it get her down, turned some things into humor (when her surgeon told her she might have a slight scar on her breast due to the lumpectomy, her reply was "Oh that's ok, my topless dancing days are over" - this is a woman in her early 60's saying that!). She found the 'good' in losing her hair - didn't have to buy shampoo, didn't need a dryer or curling irons, etc. She had a fun wig made and oh goodness I could tell you some funny stories about that!
I will keep Eliza in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

I haven't made a card for the challege yet, but this sounds like a great reason to do it. I'll try to get it in the mail by Monday, along with a couple of blank Christmas cards, per Robyn's suggestion.

That walk is quite an ordeal. Have had friends that have done it in years past. It is such a good cause, such as success and very heart-warming. Thank you so much for your willingness to send Eliza a card!

Thank you very much. I am happy to know your mom is still going strong after her bout with cancer at 87! And I feel so sad that you lost your husband so quickly after he was diagnosed. My heart also goes out to you as well! Thanks for sending Eliza a card.
Thank you all....I am touched by everyone's thoughtfulness. It is unbelievable how many people's lives are touched by this terrible illness. I wish it was not that way. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!

Your mother sounds like such a great person! I am so happy that she continues to be cancer free and that she had such a great attitude in dealing with it at the time it was happening! Thank you!!

I think it's wonderful that you thought of your friend/neighbor and posted this thread. I will get a card out to Eliza. Seems like I'm hearing so many new cases of breast cancer lately. She's in my prayers!

I'll get a card in the mail to Eliza this week. Cindy, thanks for letting us know about her situation. She will be in my prayers.
I lost my sister to breast cancer at age 46. Two years ago I was diagnosed with BC, and found out I have a BRCA2 gene mutation. I had a double mastectomy and hysterectomy, then months of chemo. I will share my e-mail address with Eliza so she can get in touch with me if she needs support. There is a great on-line education & support group for women who have a family history of BC or a genetic mutation, which I'll also share with her.
Best wishes,
Jan

Thank you Jan for sending a card to Eliza and also for offering your help to her based on your own personal experiences. I am so sorry for the loss of your sister to breast cancer and also for what you have also had to endure much from this dreaded disease! Thank you for being so kind!

I am crying as I type this. I guess I am living proof that there is hope. I was diagnosed with cervical cancer 7 years ago, and at the time, we were desperately trying to have a baby. Anyone who has seen my signature knows that there was a happy ending and I was blessed with my son (who just turned 4). I have been cancer free for 3 years know. I would love to share my card and my story with your friend and neighbor. As long as there is life, there is hope.
sending big hugs.

Thank you so much! Eliza would love to hear your story. I am excited that you are willing to share it with her! So happy for you, your family and the long cancer free years ahead of you! It's nice to hear a happy story because there are so many that turn out differently. Congratulations on your triumph over cancer and on your little 4 year old miracle! Thanks again!
just read this and will get a card made and mailed out this week for your friend. (((HUGS))) to her and to you for being such a caring friend.
I lost my oldest sister 21 years ago to cancer...not breast cancer but still cancer. It has been very hard, she was only 38 at the time.

Thank you for sending a card to Eliza. She will be so touched when she receives it. I am so sorry about your sister, 38 is so very young. This is a dreaded illness! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
And again, thank you sumtoy and Smitty2004 for also sending cards!
Cindy, I didn't participate in the challenge, but a card is on its way to Eliza now. I, too, was diagnosed with BC in March but mine wasn't nearely as severe as what hers sounds like. There are so many of us now that, hopefullyl, she'll feel lots of hugs as she goes through her treatments.
