I started this thread to accompany the
Game Piece Tutorial here on SCS. In the comments section of the tutorial there are many questions which I will attempt to answer here.
I will continue to subscribe to this thread should new questions arise; I will do my very best to assist you.
Thank you all for your comments!
1. A Krylon Leafing Pen is a premium metallic finish housed in a pen that resembles actual plating. It comes in a variety of hues including gold, silver, copper, pale gold and red shimmer. Available through most major craft stores and online.
2. Use of a Zig Painty would work, but bear in mind the Painty is more opaque and its coverage is not as pleasing as the Krylon Leafing Pen, IMHO.
3. Sealing the dominos - not necessary for magnets or objects that will not get handled, but to prevent chips I seal them regardless. Handled dominos tend to chip and can fade, due to the dye ink used. See comment #6 regarding dominos as pendants. Readily available dominos are plastic and plastic is non-porous, so the ink basically sits on the surface - like nail polish on fingernails.
4. I use Cardinal Mexican Train Dominos available at any large discount chain store. I like the Mexican Train ones because the domino dots are colored, providing more interest to the back of the piece. It is a personal preference with colored versus black dots.
5. Coloring in dominos: Use anything - markers, other inks. Don't limit yourself to dye based inks - try Tim Holtz's alcohol inks or Susan Pickering Rothemel's Pinata inks. I'm partial to anything Tim...lol
6. Krylon spray - bleeding. It can bleed if you hold the nozzle too close to your domino(s). Always remember to work in a well-ventilated area. Otherwise you will be seeing spots other than on the backs of your dominos...lol..
Seriously, hold the nozzle as far away from your piece(s) as possible, leaving a light 'dusting' on the domino(s). Repeat as necessary.
I have been experimenting with a sealant called EnviroTex (also EnviroTex Lite). The product has yielded excellent results but one must follow the instructions exactly to ensure quality results. The result is a beautiful, glass-like, virtually indestructible surface. This sealant is PERFECT for domino pendants, which really get knocked around.
Also, Junkitz now makes a silver metal 3/4" pin and bail in one. Perfect for dominos and microscope slides! Use E-6000 to adhere to back (dot side) of domino. (A bail is a triangular finding that attaches a pendant to a necklace chain). I will upload
a few pendants sealed with EnviroTex and a visual of the Junkitz Pin Bail to my gallery within the next few hours. Happy Creating!
