Default Heritage Scrapbook Poems Wanted

Cincimom said Thena Smith is the author of the poem on her scrapbook page.
~~~~~
I'm looking for Heritage Scrapbook poetry, other than the following. If you have any, please share. Thanks in advance.
The Old Family Album.
By Ethel K. Gosney
The old family album
Once was prominently displayed
With its cover of red velvet
Trimmed in gleaming silken braid.
Every parlor had a table
Filled with shells and a paperweight.
And the album of your ancestors
Anchored like a ship of state.
There were old tintypes of Grandma,
Aunts and uncles and cousins too --
And Grandpa with his cane and derby,
Fancy vest and button shoes.
Yes, the old family album
Once held its rightful place
In an old-fashioned parlor
Amid souvenirs and lace.
So if you're tired of travel
And your world seems closing in . . .
Bring out the family album
With the tintypes of your kin.
~~~~~
Family Ties
Author Unknown.

Family ties are precious things,
Woven through the years.
Of memories, of togetherness.
Of laughter, love, and tears.

Family times are treasured things,
And far though we may roam,
The tender bonds with those we love,
Still pull our hearts towards home.
~~~~~
Ties That Bind.
By Joan Stephen.
In my heart are binding ties --
Home and hearth and lullabies.
Children in the yard for fun;
The scent of clove and cinnamon.
Aprons by the kitchen door;
Hats that once a grandma wore.
Music always in the air --
Laughter ringing everywhere.
Rocking babies, spinning tops --
Deep true love and moms and pops.
Picket fences, words that please;
I remember all of these.
Parties, songs, a patchwork quilt.
A rustic barn some farmer built.
Flower gardens; butterflies --
These are all the binding ties.
~~~~~
Kitchen Clatter.
By Faye Tanner Cool.

The clatter in her kitchen
Meant that Mom was making pie,
Bread or cake or cookies
As she sang "Blest Be the Tie."
She'd clink a cup of shortening,
Swish some sugar, tap some spice;
I remember all those kitchen
Sounds as clatter extra nice.
Sometimes it was the scraping
So some pancakes wouldn't burn.
Sometimes it was the beating
Of an egg for 'nog or 'pone . . .
I can still hear that clatter now
Even though I am grown.
These days I have a kitchen
That I clatter in that way,
With a wee girl perched beside me
Storing clatter for her day.

This is awesome thanks for sharing all of your hard work.
I am looking for a poem that is to be given with hand lotion and refers to the soothing effects of friendship/lotion. I have searched many of your links and many, many more prior to searching through yours.
Thanks in advance.

You could either cut and paste this to a Word (or the like) document, or you can print out this thread if you want. At the top of the page, it says Thread Tools, Search this Thread and Display Modes. Go into Thread Tools and you can click on Printable pages.
If you want to save it to your computer, I think you go to the page you want and click "add to favorites" on your internet tool bar. I might be wrong on that one. Hopefully someone can give better directions.

Up in "thread tools", you can click on "subscribe to thread" also and the program will save the link for you. Click on "Quick Links" at top of this posting page & scroll down to "subscribed threads" & click on it or see that little envie up at the top right of this page? It goes the Private message system and there will be a sidebar on the left hand side with your member options. Scroll down to the "Subscribed Threads" wording and click on it.

Justina, I'm sorry. I haven't seen that particular poem. If anyone has, please post it for all to share. Thanks!

Menda, you're not such a goober. Everybody has to start somewhere! Some programs are easier to learn than others. I personally like the programs here. User friendly! Gigs, you did good!

I was thinking of my buddies here when I ran across the next two poems.

Sparkie
By Vera Hardman.

Additional lines by ME!

Have you ever often wondered
Who makes Christmas shining bright?
It's a little elf named Sparkie,
His work is pure delight!

(you can tell he's been busy in my craft room this year!)

He gathers the silver moonbeams
That glisten on the snow,
And he sifts the twinkling stardust
In little stacks that glow.

(muttering under my breath: "okay, what did Sparkie do with my embossing buddy?")

There are bottles filled with sunshine
And snowflakes crystal clear,
That he keeps stored upon his shelf
For just this time of year.

(I wish my bottles of embossing powder were half as neat!)

He paints the lovely tinsel gold
And when it is on your tree
You can see the sunbeams dancing
So very merrily!

(. . . in my hair, on my face, & clinging to my hose)

And all the Christmas ornaments
He polishes with care,
And uses bits of fluffy clouds,
This only he would dare!

(I want snow white fibers, not dust bunnies! Now where did I put them last year? hmm . . . )

Each shining ball will glisten bright
And much to your surprise . . .
You'll find yourself reflected there,
Quite miniature in size.

(Smile: It's Candid Camera! Thot: I wonder if Sparkie caught my best side?)

He makes lots of decorations
From crystal snowflake foam,
And if you will look about you,
You'll find some in your home.

(Waah! That "snow" was supposed to foam on the gingerbread house roof . . . what did I do wrong?)

And all the delicious cookies
He dusts with sugar treats,
Bits of candies, colored snowflakes,
Make such delightful sweets.

(Instant Die-t? I'm beating it off at my next stamping/cropping party, I promise . . . down chocolates, down eggnog, down candy canes & gingerbread . . . )

When Christmas Eve at last is here,
Sparkie is ready to play,
For his "work" still isn't finished,
He rides old Santa's sleigh.

(Sparkie, did you bestow both Rudolph & me with these glowing noses . . . sniff, sniff . . . I HATE Christmas colds!)

And joins Santa's other helpers
Slip softly in your house,
Then sprinkles stardust all about
As quiet as a mouse.

(hands on hips: does that explain how my embossing buddy traveled from my craft table to the tree?)

No wonder Christmas shines so bright,
His stardust leaves a glow
That only Christmas time can bring
And you will always know . . .

(I see Sparkie gave lessons to Hansel on making trails . . . Ah, ha! I wonder where this trail of sparkling fibers is going to lead me? . . . )

It was Santa's little Sparkie
Who sprinkled stardust there,
And gathered beauty all year long
For Christmas time to share!

(Along with Sparkie, I wish you a very Merry Crafty Christmas and a Beautiful New Year!)

Coming Home for Christmas. (for scrapbookers)
By Barbara Fischer.

No expanse of time can change
coming home on Christmas Eve . . .
as darkness drifts across a snowy sky
and frosted windows down the country lanes
are lit in festive unity.

A lone star rises,
guiding on its same familiar path
above the families joined at firesides
where ancient stories still are told,
beyond the joyous caroling
while centuries unfold.

Christmas Eve will never change
by lack of pine or mistletoe
or custom's ever-shifting mode . . .
not when arms so filled with longing
once again are coming home.

These links were shared on another forum I'm a member of for pet sympathy cards. One is called the Rainbow Bridge poem. I wasn't familiar with it myself. And then there are several pet sympathy poems on this website page. The first one is sweet and is called The Empty Space.

My New Year Resolution is to work on my scrapbooks this year, so will share some poetry I have collected to put into them. First bunch is some handprint type poetry -- in one of the threads on SCS, I ran across a request, so . . .

Handprint Poem.
Author Unknown.

Sticky fingers and big wet kisses
Dirty toes and stars with wishes
Splashing through puddles and hugs too tight
Afternoon naps and sleepless nights
I’m growing so fast, I’ll soon be grown
So I’ve made you this handprint for your very own.
So tuck it away and keep it, please
So years from now I can see
How much I changed as time went by
And you can always remember my
Sticky fingers and big wet kisses
Dirty toes and stars with wishes!!!
< < < < <
Tiny Handprints
Author Unknown.

Tiny handprints grow so fast
Their awkward groping soon will clasp
A ball, a book, a sweetheart’s hand
A diploma, briefcase, wedding band.

Tiny handprints grow so strong
It doesn’t take them very long
To snap a shirt, to paint, to draw
To labor hard, to drive a car.

Tiny handprints grow to be
A person that is quite unique
A wonderful mix of so many things
With his own feelings, thoughts and dreams.

Tiny handprints grow to rely
On his parents to bring him up just right
His parents pray that when he’s grown
He’ll say their job has been well done.

Tiny handprints are ours to love
The sweetest gift from God above
A miracle that never is surpassed
How sad they grow up way too fast.
< < < < <
Handprints on the Wall.
Author Unknown.
http://home.att.net/~Dleddy/ppoems.html

One day as I was picking
The toys up off the floor,
I noticed a small handprint
On the wall beside the door.

I knew that it was something
That I’d seen most every day,
But this time when I saw it there
I wanted it to stay.

Then tears welled up inside my eyes,
I knew it wouldn’t last
For every mother knows
Her children grow up way too fast.

Just then I put my chores aside
And held my children tight.
I sang to them sweet lullabies
And rocked into the night.

Sometimes we take for granted,
All those things that seem so small.
Like one of God’s great treasures.
A small hand print on the wall.
< < < < <
Scrapbooking Idea: diecut/sticker of baby bear next to baby photo of child -- then a taller child one -- verse about child grew with wisdom (Luke 2:40), this poem at bottom, next to a measuring tape clipart/diecut

Jesus Grew Just Like Me
God made the little babies
Who grow up just like me
He makes each little nose,
And eyes so they can see.
He makes them so they grow, grow, grow.
God is so wonderful
We do love him so!
< < < < <
Little Feet
Author Unknown.

Two little feet, ten little toes
Leave their impressions today.
Soon they will wear two little shoes
And be running and jumping at play.
Two little feet, too little time
Before they are walking to school . . .
Kicking a rock or skipping a rope
Wading a puddle or jumping a pool.
Two little feet, one little child
Will soon go their own way
But footprints in my mind recall
They stood here yesterday.

I found a book by Better Homes and Gardens called Scrapbooking with Recipes: Ideas for Preserving Kitchen Memories. Edited by Carol Field Dahlstrom. 2003. I want to make a scrapbook this year along this line and I’ve already started collecting poetry to insert and decided to share some with you.

My Kitchen Prayer.
By Nellie Pease.

Man shall not live by bread alone,
Our Lord and Master said,
But by the living Word of God,
Our souls must needs be fed.

So as I cook and serve the meals,
I will sincerely pray,
That I shall give, along with food,
Some Christ-like love today.

Now as I clear the meal away,
And wash the pots and pans
Dear God, please cleanse my thoughts and heart
With thine own loving hands.

Man shall not live by bread alone,
So we do pray, dear Lord,
“Please make us very hungry
For a knowledge of Thy Word. Amen!!
< < < < <
My Kitchen Prayer.
By Author Unknown.

Bless my little kitchen, Lord
I love its every nook,
And bless me as I do my work
Wash pots and pans and cook.

May the meals that I prepare,
Be seasoned from above,
With Thy blessing and Thy grace,
But most of all Thy love.

As we partake of earthly food,
The table Thou has spread,
We’ll not forget to Thank Thee, Lord,
For all our daily bread.

So bless my little kitchen, Lord,
And those who enter in;
May they find naught but joy and peace
And happiness therein. Amen!
< < < < <
My Kitchen Prayer.
Author Unknown.

Bless my pretty kitchen, Lord
And light it with Thy Love,
Help me plan and cook my meals
From Thy Heavenly home above.

Bless our meals with Thy Presence
And warm them with Thy grace
Watch over me as I do my work,
Washing pots and pans and plates.

The service I am trying to do
Is to make my family content,
So bless my eager efforts Lord
And make them heaven sent.
< < < < <
The Divine Office of the Kitchen.
By Cecily Hallack.

“God walks among the pots and pipkins” ~ St. Teresa. (1 Thessalonians 2:7,

Lord of the pots and pipkins, since I have no time to be
A saint by doing lovely things and vigiling with Thee,
By watching in the twilight dawn, and storming Heaven’s gates,
Make me a saint by getting meals, and washing up the plates!

Lord of the pots and pipkins, please, I offer Thee my souls,
The tiresomeness of tea leaves, and the sticky porridge bowls!
Remind me of the things I need, not just to save the stairs,
But so that I may perfectly lay tables into prayers.

Accept my roughened hands because I made them so for Thee!
Pretend my dishmop is a bow, which heavenly harmony
Makes on a fiddle frying pan; it is so hard to clean,
And, ah, so horrid! Hear, dear Lord, the music that I mean!

Although I must have Martha hands, I have a Mary mind,
And when I black the boots, I try Thy sandals, Lord, to find,
I think of how they trod our earth, what time I scrub the floor,
Accept this meditation when I haven’t time for more!

Vespers and Compline come to pass by washing supper things.
And, mostly I am very tired; and all the heart that sings
About the morning’s work, is gone, before me into bed.
Lend me, dear Lord, Thy Tireless Heart to work in me instead!

My matins are said overnight to praise and bless Thy Name
Beforehand for tomorrow’s work, which will be just the same;
So that it seems I go to bed still in my working dress!
Lord make Thy Cinderella soon a heavenly Princess.

Warm all the kitchen with Thy Love and light it with Thy Peace!
Forgive the worrying, and make the grumbling words to cease.
Lord, who laid Breakfast on the shore, forgive the world which saith
“Can any good thing come to God out of poor Nazareth?”
< < < < <
Where Love Abides.
By Rosemary Perry.

Our furnishings aren’t modern
Spanish is hardly the name.
We have no costly china
In our home, a modest frame.

But we have a friendly table,
And a cozy rocking chair,
We’re proud of our old bookcase
Crammed with books we share.

Our home is rich with blessings
And love from wall to wall.
You can feel it’s warmth when you enter,
And our door stands open for all.
< < < < <
My Kitchen.
Author Unknown.

My kitchen is a cheery place
When friends are gathered there.
I hand them a cup of coffee,
And offer them a chair.

The visit may be very brief,
Or it may be very long.
The conversation may bring tears,
Or it may fill your heart with a song.

It matters not plans are interrupted,
Or I have work to do
What matters is, we are friends,
And I have shared this time with you.

Barbara Johnson has a great idea in one of her books for memorizing scripture -- write it on the products you use everyday. For example, type up several large address labels in your word processor and stick them on: “The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of DAWN, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.” (Prov. 4:20); “The prospect of the righteous is JOY but the hopes of the wicked come to nothing.” (Prov. 15:30); or “Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily BREAD.” (Prov. 30:.

This would be a cute idea to attach scriptures to products for a bride-to-be’s kitchen shower also. Start her marriage off right!

Remember these products? Good for an invitation card to church! DUZ you DREFT along with the TIDE? Well, sister/brother, if you want JOY the TREND is to BREEZE along to church on Sunday. Too many WOODBURY their heads in a pillow or try to make a lawn SPARKLE. They forget that the Lord’s Day was made for LESTOIL, and the world LUX today. You all should WISK yourself out of bed, dress up SPIC and SPAN, and DASH into God’s house like a COMET to PRAISE!!!
< < < < <
A Candy Poster “Card” : Use a large piece of thick heavy cardstock or poster board for this card. Write words lightly with a pencil, leaving room for the addition of candy bars. Glue gum stick first (Wrigley’s or any brand stick gum) to poster board, then glue candy bar on top of gum with a hot glue gun or any strong tacky glue (I like Scotch brand). Go back over the penciled in wording with a marker.
You can use any candy bar and any verse to fit the occasion. Birthday, get well, new baby, hospital stay, etc. Everyone loves these candy board “cards”. The more you do, the easier it is to think of new messages for your cards.
Example:
Dear (SUGAR BABIES),
everything has been (ZERO) since you (WHATCHAMACALLIT) (KRACKLED).
Sure hope Dr. (HEATH) and nurse (BABY RUTH) are (LIFESAVERS) and not (BUTTERFINGERS). (GO AHEAD) and holler when he tells you to (ROLO) over. I won’t (SNICKERS).
I wish you (MOUNDS) of love on your (MILKYWAY) to recovery.
Hope you reach the (SUMMIT) be (TWIX) now and (PAYDAY).
Love,
(CHUNKY).
< < < < <
Student Candy Gram:
“ I know you think your teachers are from MARS, but there is a RIESEN for it. They’re trying to cram MOUNDS of information into your brain in a short time. You’re on a TOOTSIE ROLL and working towards graduation, and that’s hard work. But think of it, when you graduate, you could be earning $100 GRAND a year!
Cheer up, you’re not a MILK DUD or a DUM DUM.
Don’t SKITTLES it yet and go NUTRAGEOUS.
Hang in there, study hard, and don’t worry about the SNICKERS from your friends.
WERTHER or not you succeed is up to you.
I have faith in you because you’ve always been my ALMOND JOY, (or BIT-0-HONEY or SUGAR BABY)
I’ll always be here for you. HUGS & KISSES. Mom
< < < < <
Dirty Dishes Prayer: (for kitchen/ family dining scrapbooks)
By Mary Stuber.

“Thank God for dirty dishes;
they have a tale to tell.
While other folks go hungry,
we’re eating pretty well.
With home, and health, and happiness,
we shouldn’t want to fuss,
for by this stack of evidence,
God’s been very good to us!” Amen.
< < < < <
Pan Handle Mitten

“Don’t burn your fingers
On handle or spoon
Just slip this over --
Oh what a boon!”

Fold a flat stamped padded potholder in half long-wise & stitch up the side. Slip over the handle of the pan to prevent you from burning your hand.
< < < < <
Prayer Magnet: Stamp a heart or a quilt with markers on a small square of cardstock. Type or write saying below beneath image. Glue a piece of magnet to back.
“When this you see,
Please pray for me!”

< < < < <
Kitchen Refrigerator Magnet Craft:
Here’s to the powerful influence we have in our students’ lives! Take a packet of for-get-me-not flower seeds or rubber stamp a packet sleeve on cardstock (Posh Impressions has a great stamp for this) and insert a cello bag of homegrown seeds after you trim out the middle with a craft knife. Glue a magnet strip on the back of the package or sleeve. Stick a small paper note to the front in one of the lower corners that says: “Everyday and in every way, you are planting seeds for the future.” Gift your favorite teacher or stick to your own refrigerator if you are a teacher to remind you why you care! =0)
< < < < <
Donut Seeds
(attach a small package of cheerios cereal to typed directions).

“No Garden should be without a bush or two”

Directions:
Plant in any sunny location, preferably closed to a coffee shop.
Anytime is good for planting, but iced donuts grow best in winter.
Plant in rows 5 feet apart and at least 10 feet deep.
For glazed donuts, sprinkle each seed with sugar when planting.
Guarantee: If you are not 100% satisfied, dig up the seeds & return package (unopened) to the Donut Seed Association for a refund.
< < < < <
Good Neighbors
An open door,
a kindly heart,
a ready hand to lend.
You’re more than special neighbors,
You’re also special friends.
< < < < <
< < < < <
Eating Crow: Stamp a crow on a plain white coffee mug, fill with Hershey Kisses. Attach this poem to the handle & wrap all in plastic wrap, tied with curling ribbon.
“Consider while you sip this drink,
We both know that I really stink.
I’m sorry that we had a row,
Excuse me while I eat this crow.”
< < < < <
Idea for Pastor’s Paint Can Birthday Gift: Make a small paint can with blue paper with waves on top. Stamp a boat and attach. Use a diecut anchor as the gift card and tie to the paint can handle. Cut out or stamp the words “Well, @ least your boat is still afloat.” and attach to paint can in a waving line.
Inside the paint can, stick a cello bag of gummy fish candy, along with some false teeth that chatter. Wrap up the teeth tightly so they don’t go off before the Pastor opens his package and stick on top of candy and other small “old fisherman or sailor” type gifts. Enjoy!

The Family Tree
By Olive Walters.
~ www.PoemHunter.com

We’ve got a family album
Like a family tree
A thrill to turn the pages
The pictures we can see.

Starting off with grands and greats
Then slowly down the line
Like a book of history
A journey through the time.

Fashions start to alter
Mustaches come and go
Ladies skirts skip up and down
A proper fashion show.

Top hats change to boaters
To caps then none at all.
Ladies bonnets disappear
And so does grannies shawl.

Picture’s change to colour.
Black and white has gone
A different place, a different time
So much to look upon

But what is so amazing
Is the likeness we can see
Showing up the genes
Right through our family tree.
< < < < <
Genealogy and My Family
By Donna G. Fowler.
~ www.PoemHunter.com

I look up at this huge old tree
And wonder where my family will be
Each branch is different then the other
Meant special for my sisters and brother.

My mom and dad will go right here
He was once in the Army, what a noble career
And mom she love to stay at home
And raise us kids, till we were grown.

My grandparents traveled from Kentucky to Ohio
And back they went, now that’s their bio
Boxes and boxes of pictures I hold
Some are clear, other’s with folds

All I really want to say
Is don’t forget the family you have today
Just to unbury the ones of the past
Make memories today that will always last.

More handprint poems!

This Is My Hand
Author Unknown.

This is my hand
So tiny and small.
For you to hang
Upon the wall.

So you can watch
As the years go by
How we grow
My hand and I.
< < < < <
My Hands
Frances Mayer.

Sometimes you get discouraged
Because I am so small
And always leave my fingerprints
On furniture and walls.

But everyday I'm growing --
I'll be grown up someday
And all those tiny handprints
Will surely fade away.

So here's a final handprint
Just so you can recall
Exactly how my fingers looked
When I was very small.
< < < < <
One Tiny Hand
Author Unknown.

One tiny hand to guide and hold,
One tiny life to shape and mold,
Each child, a gift from God above,
A symbol of His strength and love.

Children's Hands
By Marjorie Holmes

Children's Hands . . .
First they are by tiny tendrils, gripping your finger, brushing at your breast . . .
Next they are plump and dimpled, getting into things so that you must say, "No, No!" continually. Or, "Mustn't touch, naughty hands," . . .
Then, still small and grubby, they are clutching crayons, scribbling. Or groping awkwardly with pencils, learning to print their names . . .
Then soon, so soon, they are lengthening -- catching baseballs, swinging ropes for jumping, playing jacks . . .
And a little longer still, anxiously struggling to tie a necktie for a party, or applying a first excited touch of lipstick . . .
And now, longer and stronger yet, they are being fitted for class rings, adjusting the unfamiliar robes and tasseled hats for Commencement, reaching out to take diplomas from older, surer hands . . .
And after that outstretched so eagerly and confidently for engagement rings, and wedding rings, and jobs . . .
And then, completed, they take up the new, the just beginning, with wonder and pride. Lifting her own child, the new mother marvels, "Isn't he beautiful? Just look at those tiny hands!"
< < < < <
A mother holds her children's hands for awhile . . . their hearts forever.

Where Does Mom Keep Her Memories.
By Norma Round.

Where does Mom keep her memories?
In a box worn beyond repair,
Tucked inside are memories.
Ask and she will gladly share.

Tattered valentines "To Mommy with Love",
Papers boasting Good Work, Well Done,
A handprint small and fragile,
Blue ribbons proudly won.

Macaroni shells that once formed a flower,
A baby picture smudged with kisses,
The first tooth the Fairy spared,
Cards of IOU's and loving wishes.

Where does Mom keep her memories?
In a box this precious cargo rests
Reminiscent of days long past,
This box of love is her treasure chest.

I want to use my apron card somewhere in that kitchen scrapbook, maybe on a page that shows my grandma wearing one in a photo. I know I have seen a saying or a poem that talks about an apron, but can't seem to find it. Does anyone have a nice one that talks about Grannie's apron?

Talking Post-It Postcard & SASE

Here's an idea for you for a post-it postcard. Decorate the card with a sad face and stick a post-it note on the back side where you might write with this bit of original poetry (mine ;) ), stamp & address it so they can return it to you, insert it into an envie and mail to your friend!

"How dry I am, How wet I'll be
If I don't find a note from thee.
I'll cry a lot and wail from here
Oh, Oh! I shed a tear!

I shed a tear, my heart is broke,
Make that two, my face is soaked.
My eyes are red and I am sad
Write a note and make me glad!"

I have been lurking on this tread for awhile now and I want to THANK YOU for all these wonderful poems etc.

Does anyone have a good NEW HOME poem? We had neighbors move into their newly built home (THEIR 1st HOUSE) yesterday and I would like to make them something with a nice poem on it.

THANKS,
Sheree'

Here's one I found:
May you always have-
Walls for the winds,
A roof for the rain,
Tea beside the fire,
Laughter to cheer you,
Those you love near you,
And all that your heart may desire

Thank you so much for sharing, jolitwilly. I especially love the line about the tea!

Here's a couple of boy poems I ran across for those moms of boys who are journally their son's lives, which I'm collecting scrapbooking stuff for also (I have a 20 yr old one).

Can you just picture a photo of dad/granddad and your son with this one?

The Best Way to Read a Book
By Edgar A. Guest.

Best way to read a book I know
Is get a lad of six or so,
And curl him up upon my knee
Deep in a big arm chair, where we
Can catch the warmth of blazing coals,
And then let two contented souls
Melt into one, old age and youth,
Sharing adventure’s marvelous truth.

I read a page, and then we sit
And talk it over, bit by bit;
Just how the pirates looked, and why
They flung a black flag to the sky.
We pass no paragraph without
First knowing what it’s all about,
And when the author starts a fight
We join the forces that are right.

We’re deep in Treasure Island, and
From Spy Glass Hill we’ve viewed the land;
Through thickets dense we’ve followed Jim
And shared the doubts that came to him.
We’ve heard Cap. Smollett arguing there
With Long John Silver, gaunt and spare,
And mastering our many fears
We’ve battled with those buccaneers.

Best way to read a book I’ve found
Is have a little boy around
And take him up upon your knee;
Then talk about the tale, till he
Lives it and feels it, just as you,
And shares the great adventure, too
Books have a deep and lasting joy
For him who reads them to his boy.
~~~~~~~
That Little Boy of Mine
~ Words and music by Benny Meroff,
Wayne King, and Walter Hirsch.
Two eyes that shine so bright,
Two lips that kiss goodnight,
Two arms that hold me tight,
That little boy of mine.
No one could ever know how much your coming has meant.
Because I love you so, you’re something heaven has sent.
You’re all the world to me,
You climb upon my knee,
To me you’ll always be,
That little boy of mine.
Default Mama's Apron
An apron played a big part in mama's life
As common to wear as being a housewife.
She used it to gather eggs at the end of the day
To gather vegetables to can and put away
To feed the family on a rainy day...
She used it to pick up chips
To start a fire in the old wood stove.
To cook the daily bread,
For her main concern was to keep her family fed.
She folded it around her hands
When at the table the blessing was said.
And wore it in the rain to cover her graying head,
She wrapped it around the baby's leg's when it was cold
And sometimes used it to wipe his lil' nose.
It was a faithful servant thru sad and lonely years
She even used it to dry away her tears.
When the children were tucked in and their prayers were said...
She laid out a clean one at the foot of her bed.
Their job is over now, they did their best.
Mama and her apron have been laid to rest.
If all is true about Heaven I've been told,
Mama is now weaving an apron of spun gold...
How is it that I've never seen this thread??? It's wonderful!
Here's a poem good for a sympathy card...it can obviously be modified for a man...
Her Journey's Just Begun
Don't think of her as gone away-
her journey has just begun
life holds many facets
the Earth is only one
Just think of her as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years
Think how she must be wishing
that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away
And think of her as living
In the hearts of those she touched
For nothing loved is ever lost-
And she was loved so much.
- Ellen Brenneman
Default A Word about Letters
2 Kings 19:14 Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord.
2 Chronicles 2: 11 Hiram king of Tyre replied by letter to Solomon: "Because the Lord loves his people, he has made you their king."
Esther 9:30 And Mordecai sent letters to all the Jews in the 127 provinces of the kingdom of Xerxes -- words of goodwill and assurance --
Psalm 119:103 How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Proverbs 15:30 & 16:24 A cheerful look brings joy to the heart; and good news gives health to the bones. . . Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.
Proverbs 25: 11, 25 A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. . .Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land.
Ecclesiastes 12:10 The Teacher searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true.
Acts 15: 30-31 The men were sent off and went down to Antioch, where they gathered the church together and delivered the letter. The people read it and were glad for its encouraging message.
2 Corinthians 3:2, 3 You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everybody. You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
2 Corinthians 10:11 Such people should realize that what we are in our letters when we are absent, we will be in our actions when we are present.
2 Thessalonians 2:15 & 3:17 So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by letter . . . I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand, which is the distinguishing mark in all my letters. This is how I write.
2 John :12 I have much to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to visit you and talk with you face to face, so that our joy may be complete.
How to Plant a Garden!
Sowing Seeds of Kindness:
Kind hearts are gardens,
Kind thoughts are roots,
Kind words are blossoms,
Kind deeds are fruits.
Plant 5 rows of Peas:
Patience, Presence, Promptness, Preparation, Perseverance
Plant 3 rows of Squash:
Squash unfounded rumors
Squash Indifference
Squash Criticism
Plant 4 rows of Lettuce:
Lettuce be true to our obligations
Lettuce be faithful to duty
Lettuce respect one another
Lettuce be loyal and unselfish.
Plant 3 rows of Turnips:
Turn up for all activities
Turn up with a smile
Turn up with a willing servant's heart.
No Garden Is Complete Without Thyme:
Thyme for each other
Thyme for family
Thyme for friends
Thyme for yourself.
Water Freely with Patience and Cultivate with Love.
There is Much Fruit in Your Garden because You Reap What You Sow.
Default Baby Sympathy
A good friend of mine, Karen Trueman (also a member of SCS), is an NICU nurse. She and I and another friend of mine Coleen (Briardlady on SCS) did a little challenge to create sympathy cards for Karen to have on hand at work for families of the babies that, sadly, don't make it. See the inside of my card with the poem and sentiment I used here: Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
Why God Made Little Girls
God made the world with its towering trees,
majestic mountains and restless seas.
Then stopped and said, It needs one
more thing... someone to laugh, dance and sing.
To walk in the woods and gather flowers,
to commune with nature in quiet hours."
So God created little girls, with laughing eyes
and bouncing curls, with joyful hearts and
infectious smiles, enchanting ways and
feminine wiles.
And when He'd completed the task he'd begun,
He was pleased and proud of the job He'd done.
For the world, when seen through little girl's eyes,
Greatly resembles paradise.
Default Thanks for sharing!
Here are a few more of my favorite foodie poems!
The Candy Man Lyrics
Recorded by Sammy Davis, Jr.
From the movie “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”.
Who can take a sunrise
Sprinkle it with dew
Cover it with chocolate
And a miracle or two.
The Candy Man,
The Candy Man,
The Candy Man can
“Cause he mixes it with love,
And makes the world taste good.
Who can take a rainbow,
Wrap it in a sigh
Soak it in the sun and
Make a groovy lemon pie.
The Candy Man
Makes everything he bakes
Satisfying and delicious,
Now you talk about your childhood wishes,
You can even eat the dishes.
Oh, who can take tomorrow,
Dip it in a dream,
Separate the sorrow,
And collect up all the cream.
Animal Crackers.
By Christopher Morley.
Animal crackers, and cocoa to drink,
That is the finest of suppers, I think;
When I’m grown up and can have what I please
I think I shall always insist upon these.
What do you choose when you’re offered a treat?
When Mother says, “What would you like best to eat!”
Is it waffles and syrup, or cinnamon toast/
It’s cocoa and animals that I love the most!
The kitchen’s the coziest place that I know:
The kettle is singing, the stove is aglow,
And there in the twilight, how jolly to see
The cocoa and animals waiting for me.
Daddy and Mother dine later in state,
With Mary to cook for them, Susan to wait;
But they don’t have nearly as much fun as I
Who eat in the kitchen with Nurse standing by;
And Daddy once said he would like to be me
Having cocoa and animals once more for tea!
Mix and Bake. (Tune: Frere Jacques)
Oh, it’s fun to,
Oh, it’s fun to,
Mix and bake,
page two
Mix and bake.
Mix and bake some cookies,
Mix and bake some cookies.
Yum, yum good!
Yum, yum good!
The Cupboard.
By Walter De La Mare.
I know a little cupboard,
With a teeny tiny key,
And there’s a jar of Lollipops
For me, me, me.
It has a little shelf, my dear,
As dark as dark can be,
And there’s a dish of Banbury cakes
For me, me, me.
I have a fat grandmamma,
With a very slippery knee,
And she’s Keeper of the Cupboard,
With a key, key, key.
And when I’m very good, my dear,
As good as good can be,
There’s Banbury Cakes, and Lollipops
For me, me, me.
The Sugar Plum Tree.
By Eugene Field.
Have you ever heard of the Sugar-Plum Tree?
‘Tis a marvel of great renown!
It blooms on the shore of the Lollipop sea,
In the garden of Shut-Eye Town;
page three
The fruit that it bears is so wondrously sweet
(As those who have tasted it say)
That good little children have only to eat
Of that fruit to be happy next day.
When you’ve got to the tree, you would have a hard time
To capture the fruit which I sing;
The tree is so tall that no person could climb
To the boughs where the sugar-plums swing!
But up in that tree sits a chocolate cat,
And a gingerbread dog prowls below -
And this is the way you contrive to get at
Those sugar-plums tempting you so:
You say but the word to that gingerbread dog
And he barks with such terrible zest
That the chocolate cat is at once all agog,
As her swelling proportions attest.
And the chocolate cat goes cavorting around
From this leafy limb unto that.
And the sugar-plums tumble, of course, to the ground -
Hurrah for that chocolate cat!
There are marshmallows, gumdrops, and peppermint canes,
With stripings of scarlet or gold,
And you carry away of the treasure that rains
As much as your apron can hold!
So come, little child, cuddle closer to me
In your dainty white nightcap and gown,
And I’ll rock you away to that Sugar-Plum Tree
In the garden of Shut-Eye Town.
The Little Gentleman
By Author Unknown.
Take your meals, my little man,
Always like a gentleman;
Wash your face and hands with care,
Change your shoes, and brush your hair;
Then so fresh, and clean and neat,
Come and take your proper seat;
Do not loiter and be late,
Making other people wait;
Do not rudely point or touch;
Do not eat and drink too much;
Finish what you have before
You even ask or send for more;
Never crumble or destroy
Food that others might enjoy;
They who idly crumbs will waste
Often want a loaf to taste!
Never spill your milk or tea
Never rude or noisy be;
Never choose the daintiest food,
Be content with what is good;
See in all things that you can
To be a little gentleman.
Little Fred
By Author Unknown.
When little Fred
Was called to bed,
He always acted right;
He kissed Mama
And then Papa,
And wished them all good night.
He made no noise,
Like naughty boys,
But gently up the stairs
Directly went,
When he was sent,
And always said his prayers.
The Boy We Want
By Author Unknown.
A boy that is truthful and honest
And faithful and willing to work;
But we have not a place that we care to disgrace
With a boy that is ready to shirk.
Wanted -- a boy you can tie to,
A boy that is trusty and true,
A boy that is good to old people,
And kind to the little ones too.
A boy that is nice to the home folks,
And pleasant to sister and brother,
A boy who will try when things go awry
To be helpful to father and mother.
These are the boys we depend on--
Our hope for the future, and then
Grave problems of state and the world’s work await.
Such boys when they grow to be men.
