Gamsol/Baby Oil/Mineral Spirits/Goo Gone

Okay to all the experts out there:

I just bought some Koh-i-noor pencils.

I've read different things already on all of the items in the title but I wanted to get opinions and advice on one convenient thread.

Which one of the items in the title should I buy and why? Which one is better then another? Does anyone have comparisons to link?

I use the Mona Lisa brand of Odorless Mineral Spirits (Gamsol is another brand name for this same thing). I don't have the Koh-I-Noor pencils, but use Prismacolor pencils. I have not tried the GooGone or the Baby Oil as substitutes because scents get to me, and I don't care for the scent of either one of those.

That being said--I haven't colored with anything else since I got the pencils and OMS.

DO NOT use the hardware store type of OMS--just the artist-grade that you would find at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Dick Blick, etc.

I don't think I have ever heard this before...most people say it is the same thing. Now I am curious...what is the difference?

I've always used Gamsol from Inky Antics, but just recently tried Goo Gone & I love it! I think it's a bit easier to blend than the Gamsol ~~ & cheaper ~~ I got it at the Dollar Tree!!!

A girl on our pen pal thread recommended baby oil and I loved it. Blended soooooooooooo nice and I didn't have to go out and buy anything.

Yepper! I myself just got a set of Prismacolor Pencils and Koh I Noors. I used to use a blender pen and thanks to the ladies here, I tried the Goo gone and I love it! I am a coloring fool! I think my projects look sooo much better! You should try it!! Thanks everyone who posted that tutorial!! I learn so much here! Have a great night all!

I use Xtra Mild Citrus Cleaner by Eco-House ( http://www.eco-house.com/art_supplies.html ). It has an orangey scent, but doesn't have the nastier chemicals that are in some of the Mineral Solvents.

I got it at Pearl Paint.

I just got my set of 120 Prismacolors in the mail yesterday!! Can't wait to play!

The kind of mineral spirits at the hardware store is much stronger, and while it may be called 'odorless', it will still have stronger fumes than an artist grade OMS will.

I use stumps and tortillons--not sure which I like better or which brand yet. I've also used cotton swabs (q-tips), and even cut the end off the swab and used the rolled paper stick from it to get into a tiny spot. It didn't work great--but it did get the job done.

I use to use OMS... with stumps and I had to work it to get it to move... After reading a thread here I tried Goo Gone with stumps and I am hooked - the color moves like BUTTER....

I have not tried baby oil.

i've never been any good at blending until i tried goo gone. at first the smell was strong, but now i am in love! i have an aqua painter specifically for it. i pour a little in the lid and then dip the painter in!

I have not tested the difference between mineral spirits, Goo Gone, and baby oil.

I was not interested in trying the Goo Gone, because I cannot tolerate the smell. In addition, I often have to work in the basement so having the artist-grade OMS (rather than any old turpentine, paint thinner or mineral spirits purchased at a home improvement store) is important in terms of ventilation. I did not try baby oil because I had read that some people found that the oil left a stain around their image.

I only have about 30 Prismacolors pencils and can do so much more with them since I learned how to use the OMS. You'll have fun with this technique!

I'm so glad that you started this thread. I just bought the Koh-I-Noor pencils over the weekend with a coupon at Michael's. I wanted to play but couldn't find the Gamsol anywhere. I didn't know that you could use Goo Gone or I might have bought some to try it. I might just have to try a couple of different products and see what works for me.

I use OMS from an art supply store and love it as there is no odor. I havn't tried googone as I am concerned about the smell of it with kids around.

I use Gamsol, I got it from my art supply store and it's pretty big can, so I will be using it for a while. I was there on my lunch break and saw another type , Sansador, but from what I read on the bottle it said it was a low odor.
I haven't tried goo gone, in which section do you find it?
As for pencils I use the prismacolors, the Stampin' Up! pure color pencils, and Fabber-Castel (I don't know how easy are those to be found in the US, but I brought them with me when I moved to the US)

Goo Gone fans, are you using the traditional stuff? Lately, when I went looking for it, all I find is the spray bottle of orange gel Goo Gone. I still have the traditional stuff, but I would like to know it will be around in the future if I do a comparison test and it wins! If they are identical in effect, tell me.

I bought my Koh-i-noor pencils today and just tried coloring in some images with Goo Gone. I colored two things with the koh-i-noor pencils and 2 with prismacolor pencils. All four images were blended with a q-tip and goo gone (I don't have the blending stumps yet). This is my first time doing this but what I found is that on the two images colored with the prismas, the goo gone has spread outside of the image and has left a mark all around the image. It is very faint - almost like an oil stain all around the image. But it did not do that with the koh-i-noor pencils. Has anyone else experienced this with goo gone. I am still deciding if I should buy OMS? I definitely need some blending stumps.

I have the Koh-i-noor pencils and have been using baby oil and I am NOT pleased with my results. they look nothing like what it is supposed to be so I broke down and bought some Gina K mineral spirits tonight

I have the prisma pencils, I have tried all three methods. My favorite right now is the Goo Gone Mess-Free Pen. Found it in the laundry section, Hobby Lobby has them in the adhesive section and it is a lot more expensive. Also tried the citrus Goo Gone & Baby oil I use tortillions or q-tips, don't use do much or it will leave a stain. Mona Lisa OMS use tortillions, q-tips or blender pen. The shading is very similar.

I am using the citrus goo gone as well - I still can't find the goo gone mess free pen in Saskatchewan (Canada). Now that the goo gone has dried, the mark around the images has disappeared.

to BBBP above.... I have been using the citrus goo gone and I have not experienced the stain around the image... I wonder if it's because you used a Qtip and the Qtip picked up too much of the Goo Gone? I use stumps - they are cheap and work great.... You just need to sand the tips from time to time.
BTW... I use Prismacolor pencils....

I have both the Prismacolor pencils and the KOH-I-NOOR pencils. I sat down after getting both and I had the baby oil, goo gone and Mona Lisa mineral spirits and tried each with blending stumps, q-tips and tortellions and I like the mineral spirits and blending stumps the best with both pencils, I also use SU whisper white CS. I am finding that I am going to have to use some other ink besides Staz-on as I was coloring this morning and even after letting the ink dry for about an hour is bleed a little bit. I'm sorry but I did not keep any of my test to show the difference, I did decide on the mineral spirits because it did not leave an oily outline (it did dry after awhile) and it dosn't have a smell (I have small kids that like to watch me color).

Artist grade OMS is distilled differently and has a slower evaporation rate than the hardware store kind. That means that there is less of it in the air that you are breathing at any given time. The slower evaporation rate also reduces the bad smell.

Couldn't you just pour Goo Gone in the aqua painter?

Yeah I don't quite like the smell of Goo Gone either and I think the baby oil would be well too oily. LOL

Although ordorless, the same toxic stuff is in any mineral spirit product. Proper ventilation is as important for the non-odor stuff as it is for the smelly stuff. One advantage offered by the smell..it reminds you to use caution.
Also important when using any of these products: no snacking or drinks, including water. Do not use any product with a toxic label if pregnant, nursing or you have breathing problems. Store in a tightly, correctly labeled container out of the reach of children...needless to say, children should never use any product with a toxic label.

Chemist are appalled at the casual manner crafters use (and abuse) toxic products...not good.

I haven't used OMS or Gamsol because I dislike fumes and would probably get a whopper of a headache. I have used baby oil gel and liked the results.

you probably could, but i am a squeezer and i would get too much! i have found that too much goo gone will spread and cause the "stain" outside the image. if i dip the end into the gg, i don't get quite as much and it works better...for me at least!

I finally got to try Gamsol with my new Koh-I-Noor pencils. I'm thrilled with how it came out. I will try to post something in my gallery soon but I just had to say how happy I am with this technique!

I am pretty sure that you can use any kind of pencil crayons but I think Prismas or other artist grade work better.
