Question Can I punch through ribbon???

I made a card for my 1st WS coming up this weekend. The top layer has a strip of vellum CS with a piece of grosgrain ribbon on top of it. It's anchored to 1 layer of CS with eyelets. I tried using the anywhere hole punch in the crafter's tool kit, except it didn't neatly go through the ribbon. I had to trim the fuzzy bits of ribbon away so you wouldn't see them when you put the eyelet in and mount it on the CS. Next I tried my 1/8" hole punch, but pretty much got the same effect. Any suggestions? I really like the way the ribbon looks, but I guess I could could substitue a strip of Certainly Celery CS for the ribbon. I didn't want to demo it and then make it look like our tools don't work by having to clean it up with the paper snips. Here's a link to the card.

What I've used is a paper piercer and it takes some work to get it the point of using an eyelet. A brad is much easier - smaller hole

I do quite often-look in my gallery and you will see lots of samples.
Sorry it is not working for you-I use the 1/2" punch with no problems

I do have silver brads....I could use those instead. I do recall now I used the paper piercing tool and it did go through, then I think I used the hole punch afterwards. I don't have the 1/2" punch, maybe it works better because the surface area is bigger?

Thank you both for your input!

oops-I meant to say the 1/8" punch (gosh that is a BIg difference!!!-sorry!!!)

Here is a sample where I punched through the ribbon:

Eyelets through ribbon

I will say that I tied it down first and it was pretty tight. You can also add a touch of mono under the ribbon to help keep it taut against the cardstock.

Hi,

Yes, I was just making lunches for tomorrow and said to myself...."hmmmm...she must be using the BIG ribbon! I'll check out the samples, thanks. It would look okay with a silver brad, but the eyelets are just so cute!!!

Thanks again! :^)

I agree with Britta, the trick is to keep the ribbon taut while you're punching. I just stretch it tight between my fingers and then use the 1/8" punch. The faster you get the eyelet in the better because it does fray so easily.

Here's my sample:

I punch through ribbon and haven't had a problem with a little bit of fraying showing. It kinda gets pushed to the back when you put the eyelet in, KWIM? I think the other ladies have given you come good advice! Your card is super cute!

I agree with the keeping the ribon tight, I have punched thru ribbon with my 1/8 hold punch too, and it worked great. I mostly use it for inserting brad thru ribbon and paper together. But I think that the ribbon has to tight in order to get that clean cut thru. Another thought, I think when I did it, I punched thru the ribbon and the cardstock all at once. the cardstock behind the ribbon might help too.
Keep trying!

Hi everyone,

We have success! Thank you all for your input! I didn't have the ribbon taut, that was the problem. I just tried it now by glueing the ribbon around the back of the vellum so it was tight, then I punched down a bit from the top so it only went through 1 layer of ribbon and the vellum. Popped the eyelet right in, minimal fraying which gets pushed out of the way when the eyelet goes in. Thanks so much for your help and thanks for the compliment!
