Rather than stamping with your stamp on top of the paper, put the paper on the turned over stamp and rub with your fingers to ensure that all the stamping area has good contact with the paper.

I've used soda cans. Cut off the top and bottom. Sometimes even the printed side is fund to use. Can be both cut and embossed.

I do the same. GP cardstock works great as a base. Also the cuttlebug embossing folders then fit the colored cardstock front perfectly.
