You kind of want that same material as a gelli plate though don't you? Would paint kind of bead up on a glassy/ceramic surface? Don't you kind of need the adhesion of the gelli surface to pull a good...

Maybe you could try one of those cheapy plastic/vinyl folders from the office supply section? Making sure it's a completely smooth folder and not textured of course:)
