I would use a compass to cut out the top. They are usually 5 1/2 in diameter. Set your compass to 2 3/4, and make a circle. You can purchase a compass at any craft store, Walmart, etc.

Smile Paint Can

It's a little tricky, but you can get it out. One side is curved a little more than the other. You just have to be gentle with it. Mine came out fine. :)
