Techniques for coloring ethnic faces?

I have "Tote-ally Tess" on the way and a dear friend who is a dark skinned African-American. I want to make Tess look more like her and I *don't* want to screw it up. Any hints on how to best do this?

I just bought the SU! texture plates and can't for the life of me figure out how to get them to work in the Cuttlebug. They seem too thick. Got any tips? :confused:
