Photo Challenge #112 ~ Sign Here {02/02/2011}

Here's one open to all sorts of different interpretations.

We're looking for any sort of signs - shop signs, posters, hoardings. What inspired me was the fact that I've walked under the Bulmers Cider sign for maybe three years now, several times a week, and I only consciously noticed the apples last week. I love looking out for shop signs - there are some wonderful ones in Paris, and I took a whole series of different fish shop ones in Greece last year.
I've added sign language too for one of my shots. It always interests me to see it - some of the Europeans I've seen are so animated compared to the rather staid Irish version. Last year on holidays in Greece we used to see an elderly man coming along to swim every morning, there were several people who could sign with him.

Those of you not buried under snow might have signs of Spring :D. I see catkins on some trees near us, and daffodils just starting to poke up through the earth.

Photo Challenge Rules:

~ Have FUN with this! There are no right or wrong photos.
~ Take as many pics as you want, share the few you like best.
~ Please share only current photos, taken after the challenge was issued.
~ We CANNOT upload our photos to the SCS galleries. You may upload them as an attachment or host them from your blog or any online photo hosting site. Just provide the direct link to the photo in your post and also make sure that it is not from a password protected album.
~ Just a reminder that we are a family-friendly site if you are sending others off this site to view photos in an album hosted elsewhere.
~ You can jump in and start any of the photo challenges at anytime..
~ Again - HAVE FUN

I did have a photo that had both English and Irish on it, but I have another one I'd prefer to use in this post; I'll go and find another bilingual one tomorrow, I hope

Sabrina... cool pictures.. especially your husband's signing.

thanks for sharing ~ Pam

Signs

Here are a couple signs from my weekend in Pigeon Forge, TN. The first one is probably one that everyone who's ever been there has seen. The second one was in a shop in Gatlinburg where they were offering samples of dip. It was pretty funny.

Cook22 02-03-2011 02:16 AM

Those are great signs - I like the Forge one. TN is one of those states I know almost nothing about.

yellowrose46 02-03-2011 08:27 AM

Kimyjo, I love both your photos!

This is a new museum located in one of Asheville's old jail buildings. My husband is a history consultant there and works there 2 days a week.

I couldn't possibly pick a favourite from those, Hulda, they're all wonderful. The first one is maybe my favourite, but the Pollocks one reminds me so much of Paris.
Thanks for sharing :D. The motel one is definitely something I'd never see here.

This is an old school bus that has all these images of different kinds of dogs advertising a dog training school. I had totally forgotten about it until last Friday when I met some friends for lunch; of course I didn't have a camera with me. The first picture shows the "driver".

Cool bus Audrey. I love the first one best of all, as it looks like the dog is driving the bus!
I finally got out to take some photos yesterday. I was going for a walk and almost forgot to take the camera, but I went back for it.
I live beside a conservation lake, and in the wintertime the trail through the woods is used by the snowmobile association. I must say it was well used yesterday! I'm not particularly fond of all the noise and fumes those machines produce, sort of spoiled my nice quiet commune with nature! The first photo is of the snowmobile trail, the second is of a conservation road that leads to the dam at the end of our lake. You need to have a $40. membership tag in order to use the trail ( I never buy it and have only been caught once!) The last one is right behind my property on a dead end lane that has 4 cottages. I thought it was a funny contrast to have the southwest metal image against the snow background!

Cook22 02-07-2011 04:33 AM

That dog bus is hilarious, great advertising!!
I like yours, Ina, great shots for the challenge. The Western style on in the snow is a great contrast.

Wow loving all the signs!

Two photos from last week.
One is a new poster that went up - it's a Buy One, Get One Free for the challenge, because it's a sign with a sign on it :D.
The other one is a sign in work - there's a whole series in the tunnel under the road covering different forms of transport. I chose this one because my mother had a good friend whose husband was an electrician on the Guinness boats, and e Lady Patricia was one of the ones he worked on. He it was who electrified my old Singer sewing machine that I posted in the Contain Yourself challenge.

I got this one yesterday. http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5099/...2b6b2190ac.jpg

Fantastic shot, Kathy - both the sign and the building. I love that old rusted corrugated iron - takes me right back to using sheets of it when we were building playhouses in the garden.

yellowrose46 02-17-2011 11:08 AM

Sabrina and Kathy.....great signs!

One more sign.

Cook22 02-24-2011 10:39 PM

Someone reading? It's a very homemade looking sign:D. What on earth was it actually for?

yellowrose46 02-25-2011 12:18 AM

That's a sign showing direction to the library. Now, I think if you need a sign like this, that means that you can't read the word 'library' yet, so why would you want to go to the library? I just thought it was funny.

I love all the signs everyone has been posting! I finally got some pics of signs while I was out and about recently.....

The first 2 are pretty self-explanatory, and were taken Friday in Eagle River Alaska when I was out exploring.

The last photo is a sign along the Iditarod trail, which my family and I were out watching yesterday afternoon. For anyone not familiar with it, the Iditarod is a very famous sled dog race here in Alaska. You can read about it hereThe Official Site of the Iditarod®

Cook22 03-07-2011 12:35 PM

I really like that middle sign. And the last one - I remember reading a detective story set during the Iditarod, but my memories of the book are so sketchy that I've never been able to track it down again. I like the graphic impact of the design.

Yesterday was my birthday.. and for my birthday my husband took me to Kannapolis/Concord/Mooresville, NC to visit the NASCAR race shops and to visit anything and everything having to do with Dale Earnhardt ~ my all time favorite driver.

I had the most wonderful time.. even if I did tear up when I walked into D.E.I.. it was so worth it and I came home with a big bag of goodies as well.

These are some of the signs that I seen in and around Kannapolis and Mooresville.

What a thoughtful and cool birthday outing - happy belated birthday.
My favourites are the water tower and the memorial park ones, but they were all fun to see.

yellowrose46 03-08-2011 05:43 AM

Lisa, I love your 'mushers' sign!
Pam, all of your photos are great! I like the water tower and the 'memorial sign' best. It brings back memories of when I met Dale Earnhardt. Well, I didn't actually talk to him, but I stood beside my boyfriend as he talked to Dale. My boyfriend Bob passed away in 1993, but he was a great race fan and an avid fan of Dale!

airbornewife 03-08-2011 04:59 PM

yellorose46... our youngest daughter just turned 14. Before she was born and we were picking named, I begged my husband to name her Dale, he said he really didn't want to.. so we named her Taylor Nicole after Dale's daughter whose name is the same. When she was 3 years old he came to the PX here on Ft. Bragg and we went to see him.. he rode in in a Hummer, the crowd was huge and so much excitement in one place. Taylor was on my shoulders and was clapping and chanting "Dale" it was so cute, a friend went with me that day and videotapped it. I still have it here somewhere.. gosh, I need to dig it out and watch it.

I thought I'd share this picture of the Bronze statue of Dale Earnhardt that stands in the memorial park in Kannapolis for him.. When we got there, there was a group of 6 people already there. It was nice to see it in person.

I know this isn't a sign (there are small signs on the base of the statue), I hope it's okay to post it in this thread... thanks, Pam

The day I went into town looking for flags I took a couple of sign photos too. The Chancery Inn is one I've been noticing any time I walk into town from work but I've always been on the same side of the road. I got a better shot this time walking along the river side.

yellowrose46 04-22-2011 10:24 PM

You have such interesting signs in Ireland! I love the rooster on the Inn sign!

I came across this photo while I was cleaning out the vast photos on my computer. This is a shoe store just down the road from us.

DH says I should make a separate folder just for all the different signs I took photos of in France.
Still sorting through my photos, but here are a few...

The first one is a bakery, the second one a bank.
The third one is a very typical style of china/pottery from Brittany, known as Quimper faience.

The last one could really have gone in Date and Time, but as it was the sign over a shop I'll leave it in here.

yellowrose46 10-01-2011 12:00 PM

Great French signs! Did you go in to try some crepes at the Creperie? My mouth is watering, just thinking about them!

Not there, but we did in Quimper (where that type of china design on the sign originated). Buckwheat ones for the main course, sweet ones with apple and flambéed with Calvados for dessert - they were good :D.

That's a pity that all Pam's photos are gone!!

I spotted this in a staff-only part of the Botanic Gardens yesterday, behind their new organic kitchen garden area. It was actually the crest sign that caught my eye. but then I had a giggle at the yellow one.

yellowrose46 10-16-2011 11:35 AM

Sabrina, that is hilarious!

armadillo 10-16-2011 12:45 PM

That is a nice looking crest and the yellow one is hilarious.
