Our Cat Oreo - Pray for Her!

Hi everyone,
I sent Trudee this message but thought that it would be great to get others to pray for my cat Oreo too!

Last night we took one of our cats to the emergency room. When my husband came home from work I was about to tell him that Oreo's behavior didn't seem like her normal self. We were standing in the hallway when Oreo came between us and urinated on the wall. We have 3 cats and none of them have *ever* done that. It was enough for us to say....we're taking her to the emergency room. I told my husband that coupled with her behavior and urinating like that....she was trying to tell us how she felt.

She ended up having to remain overnight. We called at 5:45 am this morning to get an update. She has a slight infection and the beginnings of Chronic Renal Insufficiency (kidney's failing - no cure). They want her to remain in the hospital today until they could get a good urine sample. So I'll call there at noon. For now we put a hold on an ultrasound but gave the go ahead for an x-ray (to see if she has stones).

I have an obsessive love for my cats. They are our children....we call them our babies. We've had Oreo for 14 years and all our girls are indoor cats.

Please pray for Oreo! She's a sensitive cat and I'm sure hates not being with us now. Please pray for her comfort too. The hardest thing about animals is that they have no understanding and you can't explain things to them. I have no idea what the next steps will be or what kind of care we will have to give her? Oreo is a very loving cat. Their love is pure and sweet. I just feel awful!!! I miss her and want her home but know that right now being with the doctor is best.

I will definitely keep your "baby" and your family in my thoughts and prayers. I have 2 chihuahuas, and I know how attached you become to them. They truly are members of your family. This time last year, the vet didn't expect my oldest one to live more than a few weeks, but she is still with us and enjoying a normal life today. Lots of prayers go up for her daily, and I truly believe that it is only because of the grace of God that she is still with us today.

So sorry to hear about your baby Oreo. Hope she gets better soon.
I understand about being so close to them. We have two ourselves and they are like our children too.

Thank you ladies! It's good to know that people understand or even care enough to write!

I once had a co-worker that said, *For crying out loud, it's only a cat! Why get so upset about it?* This was said years ago when our cat Minou passed away (enlarged heart). The vet called me at work to give me the news. I thought this co-worker was heartless. Made me quite angry at the time.

I tried to attach a photo of Oreo but can't figure out how to change the dimensions. I have the JPG thing down though

Thanks again!

I am praying for her. Please keep us posted. I too have a sensitive older cat, and he would be beside himself, thinking what have I done, so I completely understand your being destraught for his comfort. Keep me posted on the renal condtion. My cat has shown some early signs of this and our vet has been monitoring it.

I pray you and Oreo find the comfort needed to see you through this trying time!

Praying for your Oreo! From the vet side, it's a good thing that you caught it early in the disease process. There is often a lot you can do to control early renal failure (meds, fluids under the skin at home, etc.) Maybe you can stop by the hospital and visit her. I bet you would both feel better! I hope you get it all under control soon!

Rest assured that your little Oreo will be in my thoughts and prayers. Know that your cat DOES know that you love her and that she knows that she is at the vets office so that she can start feeling better. That kind of love doesn't need a spoken language in order for them to understand.

Purrs and headbutts to Oreo! I've dealt with emergency vet stays and it's tough! IGNORE anyone who says negative comments to you. I've heard those too. You need to focus on the positive now.

BTW, it will be important to give her good care now that her kidneys are failing. PM me if you'd like some links to web sites or other resources.

I will keep Oreo in kitty prayers tonight. I am so sorry that a co-worker said that to you! How awful! Fortunately, I work with many animal lovers & when my cat Eli died, everyone was so nice & sympathetic.

Hugs to you!

Wow.....you all are just awesome!!! It makes me feel not quite alone that people can understand. Thank you very very much!

I called the vet and Oreo must stay at the hospital.....including another overnight stay. My husband and I are going to go visit her. I'll know more when we question the doctor in person. We're going to bring her cat bed and share time with her in one of the family rooms there. The doctor says that she's alert but is scared and misses us.

What I do know is that she has to continue her IV....some sort of levels are not as they should. She is also on antibiotics to fight her infection. I am just stunned at how sudden this seems......but realize that we were not aware of all that was going on. I tend to beat myself up a little thinking *I should have seen something!*

You guys are great!

Hello Eileen,

I will be saying a prayer for your precious Oreo. We have a kitty baby at our house too and we lost our first kitty baby this summer(he was 11). He started having kidney failure (also out of the blue) for the first time when he was only 6. He lived 5 more years and enjoyed a happy life. He was very, very special to us and was one of the family. Anyone who doesn't understand how special our pets are is IMHO heartless. I have dealt with the "he was just a cat" comments too. Keep us updated on how Oreo is doing. I know how hard it is to be apart from him for any amount of time. Hang in there, he will be home soon.

((hugs))

Don't beat yourself up too badly. Cats can be stoic animals and hide their illnesses. Yes, go and visit her. . but I have a tip. Make sure there's a litterbox nearby. When I visited my one cat in the hospital a few years ago, he was so scared he didn't want to use the litterbox. . until I got there! I got peed on (luckily, I came *after* work!), but how could I blame him?

Don't beat yourself up. Animals typically hide their illnesses, sometimes to the point where it is too late. Think of it as a survival mechanism. In the wild, the weak are preyed upon more frequently than the healthy.

Best wishes and prayers for you and Oreo. Like others have said - that coworker was a jerk. My 8 year old cat and 5 year old lab are my babies. It will be a terrible day when something happens to either of them. I hope your visit went well, and that Oreo is on the path to recovery. Hugs to you all!

It was so cute. We walked into the room and called out *Oreo.* She perked right up and wanted to be petted right away. The vets could see a difference in Oreo already. She loved her cat bed but we couldn't leave it overnight.

Poor thing....she has her front leg wrapped up entirely for the IV to remain in place. She tried to walk out of the cage to be with us.

The update.....
We are waiting to see if her kidney failure is due to an infection or simply kidney failure. Once we get the bacterial culture back from the lab well know what kind of antibiotics to continue to give her, and well have to keep a close eye on her. We get to bring her home this evening!

We will take her back to our regular vet in a month to see how her kidneys are functioning.

That's all I know for now! We are hoping to hear good news when we pick her up (lab results will take another day or so though).

Thanks again for the positive response, your caring, prayers, furball hugs, etc.

I am so glad also that you get to bring Oreo home. Nothing is worse than having a sick child (pet) and not knowing what is wrong. A few months ago, our kitten was attacked by our dog and this kitten is very tiny. (He was the runt of the litter). Anyway, he was covered in blood from his eyes and nose, and I took him to an emergency pet clinic (this happened on a holiday). They cleaned him up, gave him antibiotics etc. and as soon as we got home, I held him and carried him around all day long just babying him. I still pick him up just to love on him and sometimes when he sees me coming toward him, he takes off running.

I know you will just love on Oreo as soon as you get her home. I pray also that it is not kidney failure, but just something that medicine will be able to take care of.

Thanks to Jennifer King (jkincolorado) I am now able to include a picture of Oreo for everyone to see. I'm not computer savvy and she helped with dimensions, etc. Thanks Jen!

Although, I have no idea why the picture cut her tail off -- I promise I cropped her whole body!

Oh I am so glad Oreo gets to come home today! I will be praying that it is just an infection that can be easily taken care of. Remember though, even if it is not, she can still live a LONG life with proper medical care. It sounds like you have some awesome vet care where you are. That will help tremendously. I will check back later for an update. Snuggle up Oreo lots when you get her home.

Many purrs and kisses to Oreo. It really isn't fun when the babies (fur babies) are sick. One of my kitties gets really bad bladder crystals when he has a different brand of litter. I hope that Oreo feels better soon.

Good thoughts to you and lots of scratching and patting for Oreo! It can be so stressful to have a pet that is sick, so do remeber to take care of yourself too! I am hoping for the best for Oreo!
