Default Is anyone still doing mixed media journals?

I miss our chats here. I quit for a while because I was doing other things but want to start again, I really miss it.

What is everybody's current favorite techniques. I looking for support to quit saying I'm going to.... and start actually doing.

Me too!

I haven't worked in mine for a while because I worked on a watercolor sketchbook for a month long challenge at Doodlewash, but I miss it!

I also haven't finished Art Journal Summer School - one of several online classes I haven't finished

Procrastinators anonymous could create a whole new very full chapter right here at SS.

Maybe you could put a journal with your watercolors and after you are done painting and while the paints are still wet you could do a quick journal page too. Mot mixed media but still therapeutic.

I have been telling myself for forever to make a small journal with bgs, gell prints & misc stuff I already have. Then all I'd have to do is a little doodling and actual journaling but haven't even done that. One problem is deciding what to put in it but honestly I have enough "stuff" to create many journals of all different kinds so it's really another excuse to procrastinate.

...probably won't happen today either, weather is going to be too pretty to be indoors.... ;)

I started going to my art journaling class again. I'll try to post some pictures. I also just made a disc-bound journal after watching this video by Vicky P:

After posting this yesterday I went and pulled out the gel prints I had set aside to make a book, pulled out my BIA, a couple of pieces of heavy cardboard and made a book. Yea for me!

However; In my enthusiasm to actually get it made I failed to do a couple of things that should have been done before binding, oops. The folded in half pages are supposed create pockets to put journaling tags into. Did I tape the bottom of the pages together first, no. Did I cut the notches into the top of the pages, again ummmm no. Didn't remember to make the covers taller than the pages so the tops of the tags would be protected either but by golly I got that thing bound. I was determined to not give up though.

My on hand selection of washi tape is limited but I forged ahead and used what I had to make my pockets. Then a trusty pair of scissors and I had pocket notches as well, albeit not the neat and tidy ones die cutting would have given me. Now I just need to make the blank tags and I will be ready to use my new journal.

The book is just for me and I don't care ... much about pretty. Maybe I will even chuckle each time I pick up this journal to use and remind myself what happens when you procrastinate. If/When you finally go forward you are likely to have forgotten 'the plan' and make live a bit harder than it could have been.

I haven't done mixed media in journal form, but I have a few friends who get together and we practice mixed media. I love it!

Making cards and participating in swaps is fun but those are things that are given away. A journal is for me alone, I love going back and looking at pages I made before. Looking at pages from a couple of years ago reminds me where I was and how much life has or has not changed since then. Maybe that is why I have been on a journal/booklets making tangent the last few weeks.

The one I mentioned in my previous post is still a work in progress. Most of the ones I've made since then are stitched bindings but one is loose watercolor paper held by an elastic band so I can remove a page, paint and put it back when dry. The pages of that one were paper samples I got at a convention and I may or may not bind it once I have "finished" it.

My favorite is probably a small 6" tall by 3" wide book that is stitch bound. It's pages are from splot and splattered background papers I created forever ago. I used some creative folds, tip ins and decoratively cut edges for it's pages.

I thought I'd revive this thread with a recent art journaling page that I made for my 6 x 6 disc-bound journal. This one was a lot of fun!

And here's one I made in my large Dylusions journal. I enjoyed stamping, coloring, and cutting out that peacock stamp.

I nearly always start with a Gel Press print these days - instant background structure. Then I cut some images from an Audubon book (book worshipers, avert your eyes please ) and added some molded paper glaze and pen work.

They are so satisfying to do!

This was covering up a super ugly drawing I did in Art Journal Summer School.

I keep an art journal and play in it with BGs from time to time.  I also make small journals but haven’t done one for a while as I seem to run out of time.  I’m predominantly a scrapper but cards seem to be my main focus these days.  I have a lot of paper hugs and have been mailing them out.  I love MM and always looking out for the Friday challenge plus a few of us are doing some MM of our own and for those times we need a fix on the MMJ thread.  I love the pages you ladies posted...absolutely beautiful.
Have fun

I was looking at these on line but I can’t tell shat the pages inside look like. Are they blank? Have designs? All our local craft stores closed so I can’t see one in person

The Dylusions Creative Journals are blank journals in various sizes that features matte heavyweight mixed media cardstock.

The Dylusions Jumpstart Journal features the same Mixed Media Cardstock as the Dylusions Creative Journals paired next to pre-printed backgrounds.

Thank you!!  No websites show the insides and the you tube video I saw it appeared the pages came pre-printed, some with color. I kind of want a blank one to force myself to complete page a week to help get my crafting g mojo back.

Here's a wild idea!
Is there a class we could all sign up for and do together at the same time? Then share what we are doing as we go along?

I ended up buying a dylusions dyary instead of a blank book. I’ve done one week and I’m out of ideas. Lol. All I did was play with some distress materials I forgot I had, which I guess is my intention. Hoping to get a little more courageous next week.

I'm still new to all this really. I started out making cards. Then that wasn't enough of a challenge so I made a few junk journals and some small scrapbooks to commemorate special holidays etc. Then I got a laminator and made some Travellers Notebook covers with diary pages I'd designed and printed myself. Then I discovered Art Journaling and collaged pictures. My latest idea is to make a large junk journal out of a cereal box and just play in it. I'm just like a kid in the sweet shop really... everything is fun.

Default Mixed Media journals

I took a class with Catherine Scanlon using Gelli plates. She take a mixed media paper pad apart and saves the binder coil. She works on the pages and puts the book back together when the pages are full.

The advantage is that you work on flat pages (no wrestling with binding or blank spots where the book won't get flat enough), you can work on many pages while others dry and it's easy to add tip ins.

As for what media I'm using? I found a box of Distress Stains that I forgot I owned, and have been playing with them. Gelatos are a quick way to get colour on a page, and I love me a Gelli plate! I don't often bother with the journalling part. Creating the page worked out the emotion, so I don't bother with words.

I love trying different media. I had bought a set of Brusho pigment powders but hardly used them, Then I bought some cheap spray bottles from Amazon and made them up into sprays after seeing the suggestion on YouTube. Now I use them all the time! They are great for getting some colour onto a page as the basis for a stencilled/stamped/whatever background. The colours are just beautiful and I sometimes add mica to them to make a lightly glittering spray.

Default Haste Makes Waste!

I smiled at Stampin Stacy's comment on quickly finishing her book. I make books quite often - some with just pockets for keeping lists, etc., and some with blank paper for various other projects. I often do 2 books at the same time as the covers use Mod Podge which is quite messy, and I like to do all the messy part at the same time. When I did a recent book, I forgot to check that the inside cover was right side up with the outside of the cover.  And yes, it ended upside down - which I see every time I open that book!

Hey Crafty Teaspoon - I love your tag line:

Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend.
Inside of a dog it's too dark to read.

It just made me laugh - totally off topic, but anything that makes us laugh these days needs to be celebrated!  Thank you!!!

I have an A5 and an A6 size and the smaller size try to do something daily.
Not all are completed and sometimes I go back to add things to a page.
Usually use limited amount of art supplies on a page.
My most recent has small cut outs from a garden catalog, acrylic paint, sentiment sticker, washi tape, watercolor.

I found a class that runs from Jan 1,2021 u til Feb 14,2021. 6 weeks - one a day with downloadable content & videos👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 There will be 45 artists teaching techniques for mixed media art journaling. I’m so excited about it. It looks very promising.
I’ll find out if I can post about it here.

I’m interesting in knowing how to remove the binder coil and reattaching it when the pages are done. Would you share this with me, please!!

OMG! I just took apart three different sizes of my many art journals so I could work on flat pages like you mentioned. I'm scared! I hope i can put them back together when I'm done otherwise I'll have to make a do it myself book-binding!!

I purchased a set of watercolor journals during the seasonal sales. I've admired the work of so many creative spirits who have inspired me to create my own. I have all the supplies needed and it's time to put them to use.

I do mixed media in art journal used to do A5 size but moved to A6 size mostly as it is easier to finish page and less supplies and uses up all the small leftovers.
Sometimes watch youtube videos for inspiration.
