Default MIX89 - Pin Ups!

Challenge Title: Pin Ups!
Hostess: UnderstandBlue (Lydia)
Keyword: MIX89

VIEW THE GALLERY FOR THIS CHALLENGE

Ready for a new Mix-Ability challenge?!! We hope you're having fun with these! Our goal is to make mixed media easy, approachable and FUN! We want to convince you that no matter what your style is - you can DO it! Have you seen our Mixed Media forum? I have found so much inspiration there!

I was prepping for my Convention presentation this summer and I decided to raid my EXTENSIVE stash of magazines for inspiration. My gelatin plate instructor - Linda Germain - had the most beautiful masks in the class I took with her - and she made them all out of magazines! You'll never look at a magazine the same way again after you try this technique.

Step 1 - Look through a magazine and choose an image that will be recognizable in silhouette - birds, flowers and people are great. Advertisements frequently have large people that are fun to use, which is what I did. I picked a cowboy from the cover of Texas Monthly.

Step 2 - Then, cut out the mask and coat it with something like Mod Podge, Gel Medium or even Crystal Effects - this makes it impervious to water mediums and turns it into something you can use over and over

Step 3 - using two mediums of your choice on your card - use your mask to spritz, sponge, splatter - WHATEVER on to preserve the silhouette on your card.

I encourage you to combine your card with one of the Hope You Can Cling To Challenges and support that great cause!

Remember to use the keyword MIX89 when uploading your creations to the gallery, come back and post a link, and let us "ooooooh" and "ahhhhhh" over your works of art!

Here are some samples to inspire you!

It sounds like a fun idea. Somewhere I have a magazine!! I don't buy them and I throw out all the junk mail that arrives here as soon as it's in the door, but I'll certainly keep my eye out for something I can use for this. Hey, maybe there's something in one of DH's old biker magazines. He NEEDS to cull them badly, LOL.
But I probably don't have time to go trawling through piles today, sigh...

This worked so well - what a fun technique! I used a catalog from the Kennedy Center - I think my ballerina was for the Nutcracker. I wish my gold stamped background showed better...I have taken over 10 photos and still can't capture it all at once in the card, just snippets. I welcome any suggestions to make it more mixed media...but there's stamping and splash involved

I didn't have any appropriate magazines... truck repair magazines wouldn't be much help. So I made my own mask using a photo of my profile.

No gelatin plate currently so I used my pinup mask and then cut a quick reverse mask to make my card.

I had to scrounge for a magazine! I really liked this technique, though. (In a tiny little voice... I'm actually proud of how this turned out.) Thanks, Lydia!

Fun! I decided I liked my rockin' gal, so I used some Scor-Tape to mount her on some acetate trimmed her a little more so I can use her again.
