Default MIX81 - Rice, Rice, Baby!

Challenge Title: Rice, Rice, Baby!
Hostess: UnderstandBlue (Lydia)
Keyword: MIX81

VIEW THE GALLERY FOR THIS CHALLENGE

Ready for a new Mix-Ability challenge?!! We hope you're having fun with these! Our goal is to make mixed media easy, approachable and FUN! We want to convince you that no matter what your style is - you can DO it! Have you seen our Mixed Media forum? I have found so much inspiration there!

While poking around in the recesses of the interwebz one day, I saw a cool technique that is akin to Salted Watercolor, but with RICE! As is my custom, I dropped everything and raided the pantry for art supplies. So today's challenge is for you to try Riced Watercolor!!

Here are the instructions:

  • I recommend taping a piece of watercolor to a board - this is a very WET technique and your paper will warp.
  • Cover the cardstock with highly pigmented watercolor - I used Lukas tube watercolor but Koi, etc. will work - experiment! the more pigment on the paper, the better the rice detail will appear. The pigment needs to be VERY wet before step 3.
  • Sprinkle rice into the wet watercolor and WALK AWAY. It needs to dry completely before you remove the rice, much like the salt technique.
Here are some photos of the process:

Dina discovered that you can re-use the rice as well, so now there is a little container of it on my desk.

Remember to use the keyword MIX81 when uploading your creations to the gallery, come back and post a link, and let us "ooooooh" and "ahhhhhh" over your works of art!

Here are some samples to inspire you!

How cool is that? Wish I could play this week but my mom is town and we head on a road trip to see my son first thing tomorrow so my list of things to do today is long!

Peeking while I wait for the bus after work. Way cool - I'll get onto the wet stage as soon as I get home and perhaps I'll even be finished in time for a daylight photo. The one time I'll be wishing I had tube AWCs and not pans!

The pans work great too Sabrina - just have a high pigment:water ratio!

Kyra got beautiful results with Dylusions sprays as well!

We just moved and all kinds of things are placed everywhere. How sad is it for the running of my household that I knew exactly where the koi watercolors were but had to scrounge to find the rice!

I've got the paper soaking but need to head off to work. Hope I have energy tonight to finish

Beautiful samples, and fun challenge.

HAHA - sounds like my house. Art supplies are always easier to find than food

MIX81 - Eat the Flies or Find a Prince to Kiss
OK, here's mine - but I can't totally edit the photo properly because an experiment with distress re-inkers is still drying in the middle of my work space . I guess I made that one TOO wet. The pan watercolours worked great.
Definitely I'll be trying this again. Especially since I had to use my good Fleurs de Sel to get the only decent result I've ever had with salt, LOL. I think my normal rock salt is too rocky.
Thank you, Lydia.

Okay, I did it, I did it! I have riced artwork! LOL Letting the piece dry and then we'll see how it looks. I tried it with a "different" kind of watercolor medium since I don't have paints like shown above.

this is raw uncooked rice right? so, does the rice absorb some of the water? or just push it out of the way?

Stacy, I think the rice works like the rock salt does in the salt stamping technique. It kinda absorbs the color and kinda pushes it away at the same time. I see a "wall" of color around each piece of raw uncooked rice on my piece with the area directly under the rice looking lighter than the painted colors.

I had rice but my tube watercolors were down to the last drop in most..I had barely enough to make a saturated color bg. This was fun.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh it worked!!!!!!!!!!!! I just tested to see if my piece was dry, and brushed all the rice off to reveal a gorgeous background! Now to finish it......
