Default MIX69 - Faux Tile 05/23/14

Challenge Title: Faux Tile
Hostess: Scrapacat (Ky)
Date: May 23, 2014
Keyword: MIX69

VIEW THE GALLERY FOR THIS CHALLENGE HERE

Ready for a new Mix-Ability challenge?!! We hope you're having fun with these! Our goal is to make mixed media, easy, approachable and FUN! We want to convince you that no matter what your style is - you can DO it!

Don't you love the look of clean tile floors? Love the patterns the grout makes, the way it instantly transforms the whole area? Don't love how hard it is to do? Heehee have I got a challenge for YOU!

This works best as a background technique, but you can also use it as a focal point or embellishment. First, pick 3 colors of paint, ink, watercolor, etc. Cover your whole paper with a bold stroke. You want a busy, energetic background. Let it dry.

Next, lay masking tape, washi tape, post-it tape, whatever you choose, over the page in a pattern.

Third, paint the whole thing with another accent color, white, or a neutral, even black works. You want contrast between your 3 colors and this coat because it becomes the 'grout.' Let it dry.

Finally, remove the tape and enjoy your beautiful work! Use it on your project! Did you learn something? Repeat the challenge with different colors and patterns. Experiment!

Here's the site that caught my eye for this challenge:

DIY Paint Project

Remember, for your project to truly qualify as mixed media, you need to use at least 2 different types of art media. You can click HERE for a list of supplies you could choose from. If you want to start these challenges in the pages of an art journal instead of a card, or on scrapbook pages, or on 3D items - please know - ANYTHING is welcome! We want you to learn and enjoy!

Please remember to put in the correct keyword (MIX69) when uploading your image. Copying and pasting the challenge keyword is recommended to avoid typos. Then come back to this thread and paste a link to the card in your gallery so we can all love up on it! Now have fun!

Here are some samples to get your muse excited:

Here are the stepped out photos for my Love card. I will have 2 more stepped out sets for you soon for 2 other ways to approach this challenge!

Click on the first photo, and you can just click through them as many times as you need to. I first put down washi tape in rows with a 1 inch gap. Then I did the same at a perpendicular angle. I sponged Distress Ink in 3 colors around the A2 card front sized piece of cardstock. Once I was happy, I stamped a splatter pattern from my SU! set Gorgeous Grunge with Memento Tuxedo Black ink. I peeled away the tape, and voila!

I hope you experiment with this technique. It has so many possible applications!

Thanks, MariLynn! I hope you get a chance to play. Washi tape, if you have some, works equally as well as masking tape.

This was such good fun and a great way to use 'bad' washi tape.

I used low-tack narrow quilters tape for mine, and had enormous fun.
I'm still trying to figure out from your description how painting white/black over a coloured background with tape lines becomes the grout? Maybe I'm still too tired from a busy week, but it seems to me that the masked part is the grout, as in your great photos which I used to make a super-quick CAS card. I'll definitely be trying this again - thanks, Ky!

Imagine doing the entire card front with the colored bg then laying the tape over it leaving gaps for the "grout." Then you paint the white or black over the tape and when you remove it, the white is evident only where the tape was not. The project Ky linked uses this method and the photos make it easier to picture!
Both methods give the tile look, but the tape is serving opposite purposes.

I've really enjoyed the sample cards and tutorial. I've got an idea - hope it will translate from brain to paper

I think I did it backwards, but still achieved a grouted tile back ground. I couldn't see how to get the lines other than the way I did it. Anyway, it came out way brighter than I anticipated, but it is what it is, and IT IS FLOURESCENT!

That's what I reckoned, Gail - but cutting the tape into bits and getting them reasonably lined up just seems like an extra unnecessary step right now when life is already too busy. As in, I didn't even have time to follow up any links, just used what was available in the post . Using tape for the grout was so much easier that I managed to get another card made during a gallery mod shift just now .
I combined it with Dina's Sanded Pencil Background tutorial from the Inkling this week.

Sorry guys - I was waylaid by my Dad's plans. LOL

Here is another way to do the tile background - just click through the photos. I used rubber cement to get a more distressed look. Let me know if you have questions!

And here is another option using rectangles of washi or masking tape.

Yay! I'm so glad you are finding ways to make it work. I wanted to show you a couple of ways to get it done, along with photo steps that were available right in the thread. Jumping links is a hassle especially when you're busy! Can't wait to see what all you come up with!

Thanks for such a fun challenge! This is just what I needed to get started today! But a clean tile floor is a rarity here with so much traffic.
Here is mine.

Here is what I did for the challenge in my art journal. I just started the whole art journal/mixed media thing and am really enjoying it. I had a stroke 2.5 years ago and find I have a lot of time on my hands to try more things. My style is quite simple but I like looking at all types to get ideas to try. not sure how to add it to the challenge album tho.

I posted this in my gallery with all the details.

Thanks for the extra photo steps, Ky! Maybe next week when work isn't so busy I'll feel more like trying the 3rd option . But the first one worked so well for me that I might not get that far.
Rubber cement and me don't have a very good relationship - I've tried it for resist techniques before, so I'll probably skip that one .

Cindy - I'm thrilled you've decided to try art journaling. I love it, and it's so therapeutic. I also love that there are very few rules. You can add it to your gallery just like you would do for a card. Included MIX69 in the keywords blank, and also add the words art journal with a comma before and after. There are many videos on YouTube that can help you learn more, and I will do whatever I can to help you. I'm so glad you're playing!

Thank you for the kind welcome.

Adding to my gallery will take some getting used to as today was the first day I put anything in these. That is also part of my "getting out there and doing things" project.

I have also just started following the Documented Life Project and am almost done with the first week. I am just doing the weekly challenges. I didn't make their type of journal. Lots of great ideas there also.

Cindy

I'm doing DLP too, Cindy - and I'm not using the planner, just my art journal pages. I'm behind, but I think just about everyone is at this point. I love the stone patio you created for your house and that's one of my Mom's favorite sayings.

Ok, sweeties! I'm going to check the gallery and share some love. I've already peeked, and it is looking FANTABULOUS!
