Default MIX290 - Just Add Patience

CHALLENGE TITLE: Just add patience
HOSTESS: UnderstandBlue (Lydia)
KEYWORD: MIX290
VIEW THE CHALLENGE: HERE
Happy Mix-ABILITY day. I am so super excited about my challenge for you today.

I used a super fun shaving cream technique at one of my retreats, and it's one of the most TIME CONSUMING techniques ever, because it involves about six hours of doing something ELSE while you wait for the right environment to develop. I call it the oxidized shaving cream technique, and I have a video on it. It's made for a MIX challenge, because even just adding ink to your background makes it mixed media.Start it before you go to work or start your day, and finish it in the evening!

Remember, for your project to truly qualify as mixed media, you need to use at least 2 different types of art media. You can click HERE for a list of supplies you could choose from. If you want to start these challenges in the pages of an art journal instead of a card, or on scrapbook pages, or on 3D items - please know - ANYTHING is welcome! We want you to learn and enjoy!

Please remember to put in the correct keyword (MIX290) when uploading your image. Copying and pasting the challenge keyword is recommended to avoid typos. Then come back to this thread and paste a link to the card in your gallery so we can all ooh and ahhh!

Hoping that a little more time won't be bad for it, because I'm leaving the house in half an hour and won't be back till about seven this evening.

Thanks for the closed captions! My first patience test was the video because unlike many I am so not a video person and usually 5 minutes is my patience limit...but with the captions on I watched it over breakfast with DH and know what to do now before I leave. Going to try the galaxy version. I've had a can of shaving foam on the desk for the last two months - thanks for making me finally use it.

p.s - I was so surprised after having seen your gorgeous DTGD card and seeing the technique title to discover it was regular re-inkers!!

Oh, how strange, I must be channeling you, Lydia. I was just reviewing your technique video last night knowing today was going to be a day for patience. I am so excited to play with shaving cream, and see the cool technique results.

Sabrina, I am feeling a bit curious about alcohol inks for this. I might try it.

I have a plateful (hah! iPad just autocorrected that to “playful” ) of inky foam doing its thing on my desk. Hopefully I’ll actually get round to doing something useful with it later!

Well, I'm not entirely convinced about the card but the background was fun to make! Maybe I'll manage to make something I'm happier with from one of the other prints.

I guess I'll try again tomorrow. I have one quarter sheet headed for the bin, two quarter sheets which will probably work for something and one quarter sheet of which only half has the oxidised look of Lydia's examples. It's probably too small to work into something unless I get an idea overnight. It's too late to try another one tonight.

This was fun! Of course I'm never satisfied with just doing 1 color combo...so I had 4 plates of foam and dye inks going..so I have about 12 more backgrounds I can use later. ;)

Oh, my goodness! So fun, Lydia! I put my shaving cream and inks on a plastic lid, stirred and left for the day! Just came home a minute ago and came in here to deposit, craft things. Surprise! I had forgotten about doing that early this morning! So have been in here making backgrounds. I can't quit, and I have gotten 15 prints, even some on embossed paper like you did. I hate to throw it away, the plate of shaving cream that is! I could make prints all night! LOL Now to think of a card to make. Love playing with stuff like this. Inky all over my new manicure!
thanks for the fun!

Here's mine - I realised I had enough of the lovely oxidised piece to fill a polaroid frame, LOL.

MIX290 Outer Space

Here's a close-up of the UFO, which possible required even more patience.

Thanks for this new technique, Lydia. I'm a more impatient person, so I decided to do it, but put the prints aside for challenges to come. One came today with the IC. My print is one of the later ones I lifted and thought it was suitable for a sympathy card that I needed.

I probably shouldn’t admit this since it says something about my craftroom habits....

I realised this morning that I hadn’t got rid of the inky foam after doing the prints yesterday. When I went to get rid of what I expected to be gloop, it was still a layer of foam and looked like the surface had bubbled over again so I decided to try another pull. Totally worked! I took enough pulls yesterday that it was smoothing out and looking more like the traditional shaving cream marbling but this morning after maybe 18 hours untouched it gave me another couple of oxidised effect pulls. I’ve deliberately put it to one side now to see whether I can get another one tomorrow!

Joanne, so I shouldn't have been impatient and thrown my 2 dishes of foam away? *sigh I only got about 4 pulls/prints from each color combo that I did. The green was SU reinkers, and the pink was alcohol inks. I even tried pulling on photo paper, thinking the AI would like that, but not at all. Plain cardstock, Neenah solar white, specifically. Here is my card, Stay Cool

They might have worked Julie! Never mind, you got a cool result anyway!

Here's a card made with a Day 2 pull, I thought it looked a bit like a snowstorm so I ended up going festive:

Did anyone use oxide inks for this technique? I know they work for the regular shaving cream technique.

I didn’t get chance to go back to the foam yesterday but I looked today - still foamy! So here’s a pull from it as well as how it looks on the plate - this is the foam and ink I did on Friday morning, nothing added, no extra swirling and it’s now Tuesday evening. The foam area has actually got larger, I guess because it’s flattened a bit and spread out.

I think it felt a bit more greasy on the paper, it certainly had more of a tendency to smear when wiping off the excess - I found it best to blot off first with a piece of paper towel and the flat of my hand. It’s a different look, the inks have sort of settled into more definite patches but it could still be a fun background!

Ok, I have played probably way to much with this technique!! But when it calls to you, you have to do it!

I used the same shaving cream four times!! Each time I added additional ink and stirred it into the original stuff! Worked great!! After the fourth time I threw the leftovers away!!

Now onto the fun part!! Tried Oxide inks with it!! Very weird, the colors seemed to separate and the shaving cream rose like a self rising pizza!!

Ok, look at the first picture! This is round one of the technique. It rose too and I got beautiful prints from it. I only used orange marmalade ink in it!

Now look at round 2. I added more colors and swirled them in! Look at it! It looks like a pizza or taco salad!!! Waiting to take the prints!
