Challenge Title: Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head

Ready for a new Mix-Ability challenge?!! We hope you're having fun with these! Our goal is to make mixed media easy, approachable and FUN! We want to convince you that no matter what your style is - you can DO it! Have you seen our Mixed Media forum? I have found so much inspiration there!

I've recently started a new obsession - my calendar art journal. I use the squares of just a desk calendar to do a tiny little sketch or painting each day. I find that when I don't have time to make a card, this is a fun, quick way to be creative each day.

I didn't get started until January 19th - I'll have fill in the other days when I have time. But it's been so rewarding! I just decide what I'll do in the moment.

Right now, this Texan is losing her mind because we've had a week of nothing but grey and rain. My tolerance for this is exactly two minutes. So actually the last three days of my journal have been inspired by rain.

I had watched this awesome video the other day and loved the water drop stamps she used - but I don't have any water drop stamps, so I decided just to draw them, which is the basis of my challenge to you today...

So your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to use my water drop drawing technique on a background featuring two or more mediums. This also looks great on patterned paper, so your two mediums can be ink and gel pen - that's what I used. Here are the steps:

  • Draw a circle - be careful not to make them perfect circles - water droplets aren't perfectly round most of the time - with a pen.
  • Shade half of the circle a bit with the same pen.
  • Using the same pen, do some stippling below the shading on the inside of the droplet, as well as OUTSIDE the droplet opposite the shading.
  • Using a white gel pen, add a highlight to the top of the shaded part of the droplet as well as to the unshaded side of the inside of the droplet. It's really amazing how real they look!
My sample is attached.

Experiment with different colors of pen, different backgrounds or on top of stamped images, like leaves, etc. or other images you'd normally see water on.

I can't wait to see what you do!

Remember to use the keyword MIX105 when uploading your creations to the gallery, come back and post a link, and let us "ooooooh" and "ahhhhhh" over your works of art!

Here are some samples to inspire you!

Oh - très cool. If I can keep the only rain we get here today on my card I'll be happy - though rain would be better than yesterday's snow. I think I'll tuck my Pitt pens and some paper into my work bag before I leave!!

Terrific challenge, tutorial, learning experience, Lydia. Thanks. I have to practice a bit more...only made one water drop.

I just watched Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with my oldest DS the other night and he loved the scene featuring the Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head. I have a piece started that might accommodate raindrops.

Lydia, love your calendar idea. I am so inspired! Lately I have been trying to paint water drops. I just LOVE how they look. I am still in the practice mode but hopefully later today I can put some on a card for your challenge today. I am so excited! Thank You! :0)

As per my write-up, I am SO glad that I peeked at this before work and brought card and pens with me. I even emailed myself a photo of Lydia's sample and saved it so that I could look at if offline (no WiFi in work, boo).

I really love this challenge. Lydia picked a fantastic one. At first I was a little intimidated by the raindrops. My first ones were a joke. I think if I had a black gel pen it would have been better. But all I had was a plain ball point pen. My stippling looked terrible. So I had to figure out my raindrops a different way. I drew horse shoe shapes with my pen. Then I shaded it with a plain pencil. Then I added highlights with white acrylic paint. I was surprised how realistic they turned out. What I also figured out while playing around, my drops of water looked better when I did it on dp. The colors made the highlights stand out more.

This is so perfect. I just saw Rain: A Beatles Tribute last night with my DD and thought I wanted to do something with "rain" in my art journal. You must be a mind reader! I can't wait to try your technique and create something (hopefully) fabulous!

I hope you can see the raindrop details. I've got a couple of other cards in the works, but need to do some school with the kiddos first.

Wow, what a challenge!

Still no luck getting live links. Never a problem until the format for iPhones changed. No response to my requests for help through the SCSI site.
