OK all you color enthusiasts this week I want you to hide your Copics, your Spectrum Noir markers, your Prismacolors....we are going to explore the world of black and white. I am a huge fan of black and white photography. Life magazine which ran from 1883 to 1972 was a staple on our coffee table when I was growing up. The photos in that magazine captured human moments from World Wars to the Great Depression to famous people and everything in between. Some of my favorite photographers can be found in the archives of Life magazine: Gordon Parks, W. Eugene Smith, Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams....if you don't know their names google them and I'm sure you will see photographs you are familiar with.
Today's challenge is to be inspired by black and white photography. Be inspired by Life magazine's fashion photos or the landscape photos of Ansel Adams (check out the links) or B&W photography in general (pick your own image and provide a link in your write up). Use black and white on your card, color an image with a No 2 pencil but keep your main image black and white. Guess you could use your gray copics for various degrees of shading in between if you like...lol. Feel free to use color in your background if you just have to add some color.
Remember to use at least two or more different mediums on your project. See this post for some ideas. Also make sure to put MIX189 in the keyword section.
Great challenge, Polly. Can I just ask, do we have to be inspired by a particular photo? What always fascinated me as a child was watching my dad develop photos, trying to figure out what they were from the negatives, and watching he details emerge slowly as he developed the prints.
The simple answer Sabrina is no. I gave those links for people who may want to use a specific photo but if you have something else in mind..go for it! My cards were inspired by the groups of fashion photos and Ansel Adams photos as a whole. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
LOL, I can't wait either...but we're both going to have to. I went and looked through images for Robert Doisneau, who is one of my favourites. And in spite of the fact that he was very much a people photographer, I did find an image that inspired a card. But - I'm having trouble getting it to be even one medium, let alone mixed . So far it's only paper. So it's back to the drawing board on this one for me.
I love the stark contrast of basic black & white but on this card I really had to fight the urge to add just ONE tiny spot of RED. I may still have to do that before I give it to my mom Here is my Study in Black & White:

what I want to know is... why does this challenge happen on a work day?
Cross your fingers I can come home early I want to play along
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you Stacy but.....remember there is no time limit on posting challenges ;) Can't wait to see what you come up with....I knew you'd like this one...you being a avid photographer :p
I chose this fashion image to be inspired by; OK, so that link didn't work. It's the second-last picture from the right in the third row in Polly's Fashion Photos link...
I still had a brick wall in mind from the photo I shared below, so my background is only bricks, no marble ;-).
