Default Help with card making storage!

oh boy do I need some solutions for storage! LOL I spent like 30 minutes the other day looking all over for a stamp that I knew I had, but could not find. grrrrr

Here's what I need help with: acrylic or photopolymer(?) stamp storage. I want something that is similar to the SU cases (the thin ones not the clear boxes) or Dvd cases that I can label (yes, I do have a label maker and love it!) with the stamp name or types, something that is easy to see from the side as I have some in a book case. ps where can I buy empty cases?

Also my system of storing my cardstock is awful. I have 12 x 12 on a shelving unit which is ok, but I put my SU cardstock in file folders by the color groups(like all the blues, greens etc) (bad idea. LOL) and I want to put each color in a separate file with it's name from SU. ughhh how do I know the name of each color??? I tend to buy by the group, like regals etc... I am looking at a small file cabinet from Wayfair to put in hanging files then each separate file.

I know if I am more organized I will enjoy creating more, as I do with sewing and spinning. Help!

Thank you all! sue Ellen

Could you use CD cases for the stamps? Thrift stores have plenty of CD storage racks/holders. That’s how I store my stamp/die sets.

You can buy empty SU dvd-type cases from SU. I think somewhere around here there's a link for a place you can buy them in bulk for cheaper, but a couple of things: (1) you have to be sure to buy ones WITHOUT spindles; (2) I don't recall the pricing on the cases or the shipping, and (3) SU is more expensive per case (I think it's like $6 or $7 for 4 cases) just find it easier to add a pack at a time to an order I'm placing otherwise, but I know it's not feasible for everyone to do it that way.

Like Covington Crafter, I use CD cases for a LOT of my clear stamps, but I've been finding they don't quite fit some of my larger set (like larger sets from MFT) and they definitely don't fit larger stamps and die combos, so I like the DVD cases, too. I have a media cabinet with adjustable shelves so I can fit both CD and DVD cases, and the combo works well for me. I buy CD cases at Target, in a 10 pack for $6.99. Be sure you're getting the standard size ones and not the slim. In the standard ones, you can pry the spindle part out pretty easily. (Don't freak out when you hear a snap-- it's usually the spindle piece, not the case.)

If you like to use watercoloring techniques, save some of the spindles to use as disposable (or reusable) palettes.

Great ideas tu ladies! I think I do like the dvd cases better, as you said Emily I do have a few that dont quite fit in a CD case.

The paper storage I ended up figuring out last night, as my stamping friend had a Bible study and we talked about it. I am going to separate all the colors of Su cardstock into files then go over to her house and compare to what she has then label them. We will have an all night color matching event! LOL It will be so good to have the colors separated so then when there is a color challenge I dont have to guess anymore.

I love this site, you ladies are fantastic!!!!!!

I only keep sentiment stamps in CD cases, and I prefer to store them flat (there was a reason for that, but I don't remember now... probably so the smaller stamps don't fall out of the gap). My other UM stamp storage is described on my blog here:

I do keep regular letter size cardstock in hanging files, but I don't have a good solution for 12" papers - mine are just stacked in a drawer.

I keep my Stampin' Up cardstock in file folders in a file cabinet. The colors are alphabetized except white and black which are right in front because I use them the most. So I have blue, brown, green, orange, pink, purple, red, and yellow.
Within each color I alphabetize the paper so it's easier to find. Blue would be: balmy blue, blueberry bushel, marina mist, night of navy, pacific point, pretty peacock and seaside spray.
I have my 12" x 12" designer series paper in this type of crate, with this type of hanging folders.
It is Stampin' Up paper which is filed by name in alphabetical order as well. I was a teacher for 35 years so file systems like this are what I'm used to. By using this crate, I know that I can't buy more paper if it's full. LOL

My 12x12 is in a small cart with large white hanging files. Color shows up well against the white. The third picture on the left shows folders in them which look smaller than 12x12 from how high up from the bottom they are. The bars can accommodate different sizes of paper depending on where you put them.

Amazon.com: Advantus Heavy Duty File Shuttle Cart, 20 x 17.4 x 14.4 Inches, Steel, Black (FS-2BHD): Home & Kitchen

These are the folders, which are slotted at the top for tabs that come with them.
Cropper Hopper 12 x 12 Clear Hanging File Folders 6 Pack

The cart and folders are sold by quite a few shops so it can be worth shopping around. My cart is under my trimmer station, which is just an IKEA desk top on adjustable legs.

So many organizing decisions!

For my SU cardstock I used to write the colors on the file folder, but found it drove me nuts to go through all the files by hand to find just the right color.

I used the SU tab punch. I punched a piece of the cardstock and stapled it to the hanging file folders in my file storage cabinet. I arranged in like colors, all red, all blue, all green and so on.

Now all I have to do is bring the pattern paper or my image over to the file cabinet, open the drawer to the correct color family I am looking for and I easily match the colors I need.

As for my stamps, I used to organize by company/manufacture. I started going nuts looking for specific sets, so I now organize all my stamps by theme, no matter if they are rubber, or photopolymer.

If I have a few stray wooden stamps I pop them in the baskets. If I have a whole collection of wooden stamps I have them in the iris carts and labeled the drawers.

These are usually left for my Penny Black critter collection and my Whipper Snapper critter collection, but I pulled all of these stamps out for winter, christmas, fall, and halloween. Michaels has 5x7 plastic photo boxes that I use to put all my cling mount stamps in.

Just my way of making organizing easier for me, everyone has a different way. Just keep working with organization until, it fits your needs and you are comfortable.

Oh I have been organizing and organizing since 2005, It never seems to stop. Well that's my opinion.

Thank you everyone! great ideas! I have all my clear stamps (well except for about 6 sets-need more cases. lol) organized and used by handy dandy label machine to label by themes. So I have flowers, holidays etc. The wooden stamps I have in drawers of a real cool Danish modern cabinet on rollers that I found in a used store. It also holds 2 of my fave vintage Singers ( a 401 and a Featherweight) Very sturdy piece of furniture.

I used the file box idea, and have my 8 x 11 sheets in there by color group.

I still have a few SU colors that I have no clue what they are, oh well.

I labeled all of my tim holtz inks and Memonto inks already have a label. Oh my goshhh creating now is so much easier and hassle free. Thank you everyone!!!

I like your idea of putting a piece of each paper on punch tab so you don't have to search through the files. Think I will do that too.
