Default Wire shelf question

I just moved and I have a 11'x26' finished room in my basement to use for my crafting space. Has anyone used the 16" deep wire shelving in their craft room? I like how stable they are but wonder about things tipping and sliding through the wire shelves. I have 4 of them already I can repurpose. I also recently saw that Target has drawer units and casters that can be added.

Wow, what a huge room! I have wire shelves in my closet. For items stored in boxes, it's not a problem. For loose items, I cover the shelf with foam board. I'm not a fan of the wire drawers but you can get plastic liners for them, or make your own. Hope that helps.

I was going to suggest some type of liner to keep things from falling between, and to keep them level, as well. Another plus to the wire shelving is that you can make your own "Clip it Up" system along the front edge. All you need are the clips (I found them HERE), but not the organizer

Container Store sells a liner with their Elfa shelving here.

I would store supplies in big wicker baskets. You can get them cheap and it all kinds of colors. Not only will they hold supplies but also decorate you room with color.

I purchase 2 units from Target a few years back and found them to be very sturdy, you can put a lot of stuff on them. One ended up going to college with my son who broke it up into 2 shelf units: a two shelf in the closet and a three shelf next to his desk for his stereo, TV and school books/etc. Needless to say the can take a lot of abuse.

I cut down the box the wire shelves came in to lay on top of the shelves. Someday I'm even going to decoupage them and make them pretty. Bonus is being able to clip things onto it such as my color wheel and ribbon bits.

For my wire shelves in my closet I put the rubber-type drawer and shelf liner stuff on it.

For my wire shelves that I have my punches on (they're kind of basket shaped) I cut felt to fit on the bottom...used a few layers. (picture attached)

That looks great. Much better than the brown cardboard box I currently have my punches stored in.

Thanks everyone for the info. I like the clip-up thing. Neato jet! I'll post a photo when I finally get it set up.

Probably not as easy to work with but a lot cheaper is MDF. You would only need 3mm thick and a sheet 4ft x 18" would only set you back about $4.

Corflute is cheaper than foam core too.

Or out of left field...you can get sheets of cardboard for protecting your floor that are a couple of mm thick and would probably work really well too.

I bought sheets of foam board and cut it to size for liners. I have 3 sets of the wire shelving units (12x12) and use one set (stacked 3 shelves high) for storing my paper stacks in plastic totes. The foam board liners help the plastic totes slide easily in and out of the units.

Love my wire shelves! I made one that was 3 x 3 plus one that all of my paper is stored in Cropper Hopper boxes. I have another that is 3 x 2 and hold misc. stuff and is the same height as my table & desk so it is more flat surface. NO problems thus far and I've had them up and loaded for 4 years! I used zip ties to make shelves inside of some of the 16" x 16" square so things don't get stacked.

I have a comparably sized room that has a 10-ft high ceiling and my wire shelving goes all the way up the wall (when retrieving from the upper shelves, I call that "ladder work.") For my shelf liners, I used clear acrylic sheets cut to the right size--like you use for storm windows. This allows my storage containers to slide easily on/off the shelf. I have been in this craft studio for 15 years and everything has stayed in place. Love my room!
