Do you mix in the in colors as well?

I am trying to set up a new way of storing cardstock. I had them by color family in a paper sorter. Now I want to put them in a drawer with hanging folders. I cant decide between color family or color group. I am a hobby demo, so that really doesn't play a role. I know I can try both ways to "see" which I like. But I would rather just decide and go with it as I spend way more time organizing than creating! I think the main point that is holding me up is the in colors, I guess for me I think if I go with color group (roygbiv) then it only makes sense to mix in the in colors. I don't know why I have a hard time with that?? I do have all of the years of in colors to deal with.

Any advice or helpful info would be greatly appreciated.

Heya, I'm not an SU demo (hobby or otherwise) so I'm not sure if there is a demo advantage to organizing, but here's how I do it and why.

I organize all my inks and paper by roygbiv, including in colors and retired.

Why:

1. Because I have a lot of retired colors that I still use, I don't want to have to remember what's in and what's out. I can just spin my caddy to the color range and pick what works for my project.

2. Because a lot of the old in colors are now in the regular color groupings

3. I don't want to have to remember all the in colors and go looking for them in a separate place.

For me, out of site is out of mind. If it isn't easily visible I'll forget about it - so if I go searching for a teal green and "bermuda bay" isn't included in that range, I'll forget I have it and choose the next best thing. That's great, but if bermuda bay is really the best color, I want to make sure it gets used

Good luck with your organizing. I hear you about spending more time organizing than crafting! I'm very guilty of that

I organize paper and inks ROYGBIV, too, and for the same reasons Gavlinne mentioned.

I organize all my paper & ink pads ROYGBIV. I bought my Memento inks in sets and I was hardly using them. I recently just put them in ROYGBIV and now I am using them. I have been buying my SU ink pads individually. When those ink pads started coming in I organized ROYGBIV. It just works better for me since I am a color person. The only SU item I do not have in ROYGBIV are my reinkers. I keep those in the original box. I guess my markers too since they came in the case.

Another ROYGBIV vote here. I put all my cardstock in color order, SU or not and it is so much simpler to match patterned paper and to do monochromatic cards. Also, I am much more likely to use it if I can see it. I separate my scraps into color order, too. I use them a lot more this way.

I keep my paper and ink in ROYGBIV. No particular order, just general color groups. I'm no longer a demonstrator, but when I was, I used the tab position on the hanging folders to keep track of what was current, In Color, retired, other companies, etc. So for example, tab position 5 might be all of the retired colors, tab position 4 all of the In Colors, etc. Made it really easy to scan the folders and know if something was current or not.

Thank you for the tip on the tab, placement. Duh, why didn't I think of that!!

I am a demo and I organize everything (well not DSP yet, but I'm working on it-at least the prints & patterns ones) in ROYGBIV order. Except, I a lot of times see the pinks at the end with the violets, but my pinks are at the beginning of the order. And my neutrals are after the purples.

White, Pink, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown, Gray, Black

I like mine ROYGBIV too. I may know I need a green, but am not always sure on which green I need. I can easily look at that section and select the one that I need. I do have mine in somewhat darkest to lightest order within colors, too. I'm also not a demo, so keep colors I had even if they retired if I liked them. If I didn't, they went into the camp craft box.

I keep mine in ROYGBIV order too, with the In-Colors mixed in. I just mark an "R" on the labels & tabs for retired colors and "IC" with the years active for the In Colors (Wisteria Wonder has "IC 2011-13", for example). I don't use what I can't see, so I have to have a way to know what can be used for classes, but still have everything together to use on personal projects.

Thanks for sharing the actual order you use. I've wanted to go ROYGBIV for awhile now, and as silly as it sounds, didn't know where or how to add in the browns, blacks and gray.

I also love the idea of the previous poster about using the rainbow, but use the tab position to tell the family. Great idea and my personal "duh" moment. It all seems so simple once you see it in print.

I have had my closet in color order for a long time now, and I've learned a few things that I applied to my cardstock.

First, don't stress if the order isn't perfect.

I use open top file boxes, and lay them on their sides so the cardstock doesn't warp.

My cardstock is grouped by color, then from light to dark within the color. My neutrals get their own box.

Each color gets a manilla folder. I use the word window punch to place a small sample of the color on the label, and write the name of the color on the tab. When the color retires, I write an "R" on the tab.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

me too, ROYGBIV all the way! I found it makes a huge difference in how I see paper & all my supplies. And I've made the all easier to grab by having them out in the open, so I will actually see & use them. Hope you love it as much as I do, Dina!

Thanks for posting this color order. I do roughly the same, but have a dumb question. Where do you put the odd colors, like retired Magenta Magic, or Pomegranate, or Guava, or Sahara Sand? Some colors fit into 2 categories. It shouldn't make me crazy, but it does.

I don't have any Stampin' Up paper, but I do have cardstock and printed paper that seem to fall in between. For those, I go by my first instinct.

For instance, a might have a turquoise that is not really blue nor is it really green. If my first instinct is that it's mostly blue, I'll put it with my blues. Later, if I pull out my blue section and think, "this turquoise actually looks more green than blue" then I can move it to the green. And, knowing me, in a couple of months I'll probably pull out the green section and think, "Nope, this turquoise really does belong with the blues." :-)

But as I said, just go with your first instinct. If it looks more purple than red, put it with the purples. If at first I think a color looks more orange than red, I put it with my oranges. You can always make changes later. The important thing is to give it a home with others that are similar.

Also, I keep my creams in my white section. But I keep my beige papers with my browns.

I organize paper and inks ROYGBIV,too. Doesn't matter if in-color or retired or current. I have 3 plastic totes designed to hold hanging files. I just removed the lids and store them under one of my craft tables. I have 2 tables, one where I create, the other where I have my paper cutter, and unmounted stamps stored in dvd cases.
