I use them for photo sorting. When my husband's first wife divorced him they split their photo's of the kids and/or made duplicates of some. They were all tossed into one shoebox. I gathered several additional shoeboxes and sorted the photos into one box per child and another box for pics with more than one of them in the photo. I've done the same with my niece and nephew.
Someday they will be sorted more thourougly and put into scrapbooks.
I tried using shoeboxes and to me there just wasn't enough organization to them. It was like I was just throwing it all in a box and I cannot stand that. I am one of those people that in my craft room everything has a place and that is where it belongs. But if it works for you go for it, I'm all about cheap storage solutions.
I do use shoe boxes for my ribbon storage. I used cardboard and cut slits in every so often, then spent an evening or two wrapping them onto the cards. Some are in baggies as well once I got tired of wrapping them, lol. But they are easily viewable as I stack the cards in between the baggies and sort by color. I have 2 so far and probably enough ribbon to possibly create a third now. I keep any really sturdy shoe boxes in the garage for future uses.

I would be concerned about using shoe boxes to store photos unless I were sure they were acid-free. If not, they will cause your photos to yellow over time. Just a heads up!

I covered mine with wrapping paper and attached label holders. When there's a certain project that I buy embellies for, I place all of them in a shoebox and label it with that project name. For example, I have a niece that loves Cinderella. When I find cute Cinderella embellies, I put them in the box labeled with her name. When it comes time to make her a card or page, I know which box to go to that has embellies presorted just for her.

I use photoboxes - but it's kind of the same as a shoe box - to store my seasonal stamps so my work area is not too cluttered. I have one for Valentine's, one for Halloween, ahem, 3 for Christmas (so far)...I mostly put the stamps and embellishments I simply wouldn't use any other time of year in the boxes.
It helps me stay organized (ish), takes away some of the confusion of too much choice, and makes it easy to find my seasonal stuff.
I think decorating the shoe boxes with patterned paper is a great idea. When things look pretty it makes most people happier.
