IC538 - {03-26-2016} The Bus Painting Artist - Kathleen McElwaine Art
Big hugs & prayers to Audrie this week - she's a bit under the weather! Hope you feel better soon Audrie!
I'm filling in and I have chosen the work of a friend and local art favorite here in Austin - Kathleen McElwaine.
Locally, Kathleen is known as the "bus painting artist" because she used a portable watercolor setup to pass the time on her grueling commute (Austinites will feel this pain) from Georgetown to the University of Texas every day, painting beautiful Longhorns and other Texas pastoral scenes.
Her style is whimsical and sweet and many times she adds fun, loose ink pen work around her images when they are done.
She's truly a Texas treasure, and I'm so glad our paths crossed. One of the reasons I think I love her art so much is that she uses an opposite color palette from me - it's so warm and pretty and her images are beloved for those of us who live here.
I tried to get a Kathleen style image by first doing no-line watercolor on my image - just very quick and loose. Then I went around it with a Copic multiliner in her style to make it look like a hand-drawn image. Since I can't draw to save my life, this is a fun way to make it look like I could at least try.
Thanks for stepping up to the plate, Lydia, while our beloved Ms. Audrie is under the weather. Audrie, you take good care and rest well, my friend. Great Texas artist you've brought us, Lydia. It should be a fun challenge.

Lydia-I so enjoyed this site today- Kathleen's work is wonderful! I was inspired by the My Little Chickadee sketch and used SU's Honeycomb Happiness for my bird image, adding some coloring, and drawing a foreground. Here's Easter Chick tag
Sending good thoughts to Audrie too

Was inspired by Kathleen's Bunny Rabbit or Hare?- used a new stamp of artist's brushes- did a watercolor bleed- and some distressing. Paired with a die cut bunny and sparkly circle for Easter. Finished with a twines/button combo. Here's Bunny Art

Wow. What a challenge. I live in Texas and have seen some of Kathleen McElwaine's art in galleries. It's even more stunning in real life. Thank you for showing even the most reluctant of us that we can doodle.
Here's my attempt.
