My company has done two walks this year where we needed to walk 5 miles a day to qualify for some fun company swag. I did both of them and after doing the first one for 25 days I kept at it. Only walking 5 miles a day and eating smaller portions for 5 months I am down 20 pounds. At this rate I will have lost all the extra weight I gained in the last 8 years in less than a year. If I lose 10 more pounds I will have lost it all and if I lose another 20 pounds for a total of 40 then I will be the smallest I have ever been post high school.

My weight is the highest ever (except for pregnancy). Getting older is making it harder and harder to lose weight. The old strategies don't cut it any more and I certainly can't afford to gain more over the winter as I often do. My exercise routine is walking, but winter in Indiana makes that impossible so I have had to re-lose the same weight every year. I'm determined to do better over this winter!
Yes, I agree with getting older is making it harder to lose weight. Of course menopause doesn't help matters either..... I came to the shocking conclusion when I was 34 that I couldn't just continue to eat whatever I wanted any longer and still maintain a low weight. That's when I began an exercise routine which started at 3X per week and has increased to 6 days along with walking most every day. Some days it's a struggle, but I don't want to stop eating so I just do it. Lol! We all have choices: continue to eat what you want, when you want to and gain weight or exercise and be careful what you eat so that you can maintain a normal weight for your height. Remember that after age 25, women lose about 1 1/2-2 lbs. of muscle each year, so if we don't lift weights to gain the muscle back and keep toned, it turns to fat, and muscle burns more calories than fat.

Going through the same thing with my son and his dog that we had to put down three months ago. He says no more animals for a long time because he can't stand the thought of bringing in a "replacement pet."

This coming week I'm critter sitting for a friend. I wanted to bring the little ones (the two indoor dogs) here to watch them but my son said no. He doesn't want to be reminded of the ol' pooch we lost. So, I'll be living at a friend's house a couple miles away for 10 days.

As for 71, 5'6" and 140 -- Sounds PERFECT to me! At this point, I'd be happy with 56, 5'4" and 175, but that probably ain't gonna happen in my lifetime.

Poppydarling, I will definitely check out the Kessler book.

Very true. When I've done better at managing my weight it has been when I was being conscious and careful about what I was eating and when I was exercising no matter what. Eating only when hungry and stopping when full and no snacking at night was key for me.
34 was the year that my struggles began too; I gained almost 15 pounds and then got pregnant with child #4. Ever since that pregnancy I have struggled with pelvic girdle pain that makes running impossible and many forms of exercise painful; not making excuses just explaining why it has been tough.

I dropped 30 lbs in 2010 but gained some back. I remember going into the dressing room at sears and crying tears of joy because nothing I took in with me fit....it was all too big! I guess I was so used to crying because everything was usually too tight! One thing I did was quit drinking soda. They told me in weight class not to waste calories on your drinks. So I drank lots of water. I also have more than a dozen Leslie Sansone Walk Fit videos!

Our kitty was poisoned in that contamination of pet food by China - you might remember that incident. It was my husband's first cat and he loved her. Super traumatic for both of us, but he said the same thing - he couldn't do it again.

I pined and pined and then one day someone at his work rescued two kittens that someone had tossed out on a busy street at 3 weeks old and sent out an email to the office asking for someone to adopt them - he brought them home.

So never say never. He didn't understand until these two that it's the only way to get over that broken heart over a beloved pet. He loves these little kittiots as we call them

Hugs to you for Max.

Here's an article about the Kessler book. Looks interesting.

Soda has never been a temptation for me, but I do drink coffee with creamer which has plenty of sugar too....or fake sugar. It has been a goal of mine to wean myself back off caffeine in order to rid myself of those calories and also help with the sleep issues. I have migraines occasionally so I've got to be careful as I alter the caffeine.

Heading to bed in hopes of another solid night of sleep. Menopause affects so much doesn't it...the interrupted sleep is one of the hardest parts for me.

Going to walk right through that kitchen and not eat anything....there, I've written it down and now I've got to do it!

Default Hi

Lucky ladies- I hurt my neck at work and now have a (part time) desk job- sitting..... I am unable to be as active as I used to be, so the pounds add on + Thyroid is acting up. I never knew how hard a desk job was! I worked in Intensive Care for 25 years, where you do not sit too much!

Walking just does not cut it when I was used to doing much ore than that, but it is better that not being able to do anything at all ..... : ) Counting blessings : )

I kept guessing and was told that I had to guess higher, guess higher, guess higher.
Finally, I made my guess about 10x higher than my original guess and it was accepted.

Ann, congratulations on so many views.

Talking about potatos, try making potato soup with onions & habanero bacon with it in the soup. My hubby made it for us last night.

Been a hectic week, I think the good thing about this whole week is we bought a used/new car. It's really a nice Volvo Sedan 850 V6 electric, sunroof....nicer to drive in the snow than my old Saturn.

I fell down our stairs this morning in the dark, why I didn't turn the lights on is beyond me. I missed 3 steps, fell flat on my face & bruised my knees. I cried, am I to old to cry?

I've been getting quite a few messages from people on card groups through Face Book regarding this card drive. I shared this forum, so next year we will have more people making more cards. They thought it was a good idea for the patients.

My box was mailed yesterday, hoping it gets there by the weekend.

Congratulations to the newest winners. I'll try & pop in at work tomorrow, but I've been covering for someone all week, I'm tired.

Have a Great day & have fun with Lydia's questions.

Connie

I'm having the same problem being asked to enter a higher number. On Tuesday, no matter what number I entered I was told it needed to be a number higher than zero. It happened on my iPad but not my laptop. Weird.

I have to add a comment to the weight loss conversation.....I speak with authority as someone who has always struggled with weight. In my 30's and early 40's I was let's just say a lot, a lot, a lot heavier and it took me a year and a half maybe to lose most of that. I still go up and down and have been trying this year to lose weight once again. I'm down 25# this year..I've been keeping track on My Fitness Pal app which is great...really keeps you acountable...and walking a lot. It's coming off slowly and this summer it totally stalled out (chalk that up to slow metabolism as you get older) so I decided I needed to shake things up...I joined the Y and am back on track So I feel the pain of those out there trying to lose or even maintain....it's hard and it only gets harder as you get older.

Connie, its OK to cry! One time I fell down the back deck steps. Sat on the bottom crying until it changed to a laugh. I couldn't do that today. I have osteo so a fall would be dangerous for me. Doc is going to try to talk me into medication for osteo but with the listed side effects I'm afraid because I already have enough stuff going on in this body! Hope you don't hurt too bad.
T.Joy...I need to pull out Leslie Sansone DVD and get busy. I have at least a dozen to choose from!

LOVE!
I knew it would be one of those two....Anne with the volume of cards that she made, and Sallie combined with other challenges for most of her cards! Way to go ladies. I couldn't get my phone to cooperate when you were taking guesses but I would have guessed high at 1200 anyway!

Congrats to our new winners. My guesses were ridiculous........proves they were guesses!

Connie, I'm glad you didn't break anything!!

Menopause is not always brief. After 20 years, I still have hot flashes every 40 minutes, day and night. My oncologist says my thermostat is broken!! He is funny, but nothing we've tried helps. I can;t take anything since my cancer was estrogen driven.

I'd love to walk, but can't leave Mom alone, nor can I take her. Still dealing with fasciitis in both feet as well. But I'll tell you this.........I enjoy a glass of wine every day!!

Ann was amazing with the amount of cards she created AND I think she commented on EVERY card. Mind blown!

Congrats to all the winners!

I walk in my neighborhood - even on rainy days. I started during the summer so I have not done any in the snow. Also I work in a really big building and it is about 3/4 of a mile from my car to my desk. If I can't get my walk in before work then I walk to the parking garage at work and I can stay out of the sun and rain at lunch. When the winter hits, I can still get a "walk" done in my basement as I have 2 ellipticals and I can calculate 5 miles on them. Every mile is 2000 steps so I have a pedometer that I wear all day at work and when I walk in my neighborhood to calculate and I don't end my day until I have in my 10,000 steps.

34 was the year that my struggles began too; I gained almost 15 pounds and then got pregnant with child #4. Ever since that pregnancy I have struggled with pelvic girdle pain that makes running impossible and many forms of exercise painful; not making excuses just explaining why it has been tough.
I totally understand how it can get tough to workout. I have a really bad back (broke it twice and a shallow disk protrusion that if I turn wrong till cause it to go completely out). I struggle some days on doing the walk and if I have to do the elliptical I have to be really careful. I can't run at all it hurts too much but I can walk. With my little guy I gained 100 pounds and it was 2 years before I could start working out again to lose the weight due to breaking my back but I knew I needed to do it because the extra weight was hurting my back to do anything normal.

The elliptical doesn't work at all for me...anything that puts one leg higher than the other throws my pubic bone out of whack. We said last winter that we were going to get a treadmill but then never did it. This year for sure!!! There aren't even any malls closeby for walking. I think maybe people walk at our community center so I'll check that out too, but that would be just walking around in a gym. I guess even if it's boring it just has to get done!
I made it without through the kitchen without eating anything last night though I did sample the vegetable broth that I'd made....delicious with the pumpkin skins cooked in there.
Didn't make it through the night sleeping, but that was DS's fault for hanging out with friends playing board games after work....I never sleep well until everyone is home in their beds, even the adults!
It looks kind of cloudy but I'd better take the pooch for our walk now before it actually gets rainy like it was yesterday when we were out! Then I'm going to cut the herbs and break out the dehydrator to get that going. Somewhere in there I've got to work with DD on her school and I REALLY need to make a couple of baby cards today. I'll check in after lunch and see what's happening here. Maybe I'll have picked a winner?

I"m sure that it has been quite a process, such a vicious cycle when you've got an injury that makes it hard to exercise. Thankful you've been able to get back to it!

Yes, first time I was 5 and fell from the second story of our home. Then when delivering my little guy broke it during delivery. Did not learn about the shallow disc protrusion until I was already expecting my little guy and my back kept going out while I was expecting. It acts up all the time but I find ways to manage. I refuse to live my life worrying about not being able to do something because then I will not have a life to live.
