Tree branches keep breaking & landing on the roof, but so far none of them have hit the power lines. It's been several years since we had an ice storm this bad, this early.

Just watched the video of trying Thanksgiving Dinner. It was definitely not a really good test because if you like the white meat of a turkey you know that the mashed potatoes and gravy are what make it not dry. I can't say as I blame them about the sweet potatoes with marshmallows. Even though that is always how we had them for TG I never liked sweet potatoes until I quit putting the marshmallows on them and just put some butter and a touch of cinnamon in mine now. And I actually prefer sweet potato fries, which I roast at 450 instead of frying. But it was pretty funny to hear some of their comments. I just got home from work and am about to call HP support to see if I cam resolve my printer problem. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
Sabrina I wish you were close by as well, I need to learn more about computer things. Whenever I try to do something on my own it seems to go ok for a while and then there will be that question that I just don't even know what they are talking about. So then I don't dare do any more.

But I must have a printer that works so I'll make the call.

Fifteen years ago, I did all my own computer work: new hard drive, regular defrag/cleanup maintenance, cleaning up viruses, etc. I found it necessary to always have two computers on hand. One to work on and one to research how to work on the broken computer.

These days, I just whine to my son and make him do it. But I've noticed that the less I do, the less I understand what I should do and the more I forget the things I used to know.

Oh yes, I am the only one who likes deviled eggs unless my SIL in here. I do like some sweet potato casseroles if the have lots of brown sugar and pecans in them. Then it's dessert!
I just got off the phone with HP Customer Support! Thankfully my printer is still under warranty so I have full support! And with a remote session I can now print better than ever. Yea!!

It is perfectly OK to fix something MIL doesn't like as long as there is plenty she does. She can just skip it and let everyone else enjoy.

We never had mac & cheese with our holiday dinners. I never learned how to make homemade, but maybe I'll give it a try and make that my contribution to Christmas dinner--along with my traditional pecan pie and chocolate chip cookies.

Our Thanksgiving dinner is small, usually with just my parents and my boys. Christmas is big and includes my sister's family and our kids' current boyfriend/girlfriends.

You have not lived until you've had homemade mac & cheese! Here is a good simple recipe by Rachael Ray (and there's a link to a video that shows how it's made, too).

I started a new tradition this year with a Celery Root Apple Salad with Lemon Vinaigrette Dressing. Nice and bright amongst all the heavy carbs. The oddest traditional items on our menu are prune whip and Cottage Cheese Pie.

That sounds delicious! And you took me down memory lane with the mention of prune whip – I used to order it as a kid when my aunt would take me to a downtown hotel in Chicago for my birthday LOL I'm sure I was an odd 10-year-old but I loved it!

Or you can check out my Crack Mac n Cheese that Lydia became addicted to!! She easily changed a few things...it's simple to do with the basic recipe! And the fam all requests it at any time of the year!! I can't make it for just the two of us because it is NOT a healthy dish and we both have a wee bit of cholesterol issues!

The first year I was at my MIL's for Thanksgiving I made prune whip and she ate several helpings of it....she then spent the rest of the day regretting the decision to eat that many prunes.
When I make cottage cheese pie for others I tell them it is custard and then once they've tasted it I tell them it has cottage cheese in it. My middle DD made it this year and my dad told her that she is now the 5th generation to make that pie for him. He was the oldest grandson in his family and when he came home from college his grandma always made that pie for him. I learned to make it for my generation and of course his mom and mine are the middle two generations.

Just spent a half an hour with the kids watching the Irish People on Youtube! Thanks for a new obsession! We ate fake Irish dinner tonight too, Corned Beef and Cabbage. I know it isn't really Irish food, but it is yummy. Nice to have it cook while we were out watching the new Rocky movie.

Oh Dina that letter is so moving!! If we ever thought our cards were worthless this letter tells us otherwise! Thank you for sharing that with us all - it is beautiful and we are blessed knowing that our cards are uplifting someone in need. God bless!

I think they did... I thought it was with the turkey.

I also enjoyed watching them try American sandwiches, soda pops, and candy bars. Oh, and then I watched them watching baseball.

How can you not love hard boiled eggs! WE just finished up the leftovers today at lunch. Sorry to see them go.....actually I like leftover Thanksgiving better than the first!! We had a lovely day with kids, grands, and a guest (boyfriend of Erin's), and some had snoozes after dinner. Watched football, all went home, and DH, Mom and I regrouped with a glass of wine! Glad to see them come, glad to see them go. Mom gets very tired. We had a birthday cake for her (93!), and she was pretty tired by 4 PM.

Now....I must say thanks for being a winner! I am going to check out Power Poppy and see what my heart desires!!

Just had a chance to check out the winners and found out that I AM one! I am totally unfamiliar with Flonz, so I will have to check out their website. Thanks so much! And congrats to all the other winners so far.

Had a really nice Thanksgiving at my son and DIL's house. And last night I attended my very first ice hockey game with them. Very exciting!

BTW, I love deviled eggs!

Well, either my head is in a cloud, or maybe under a rock, but I did not realize that this thread existed...I just thought that the regular HYCCT thread ended. Here I am 22 pages behind - I am not even going to try to go back, but glad I at least found it now. Huge congrats to everyone who has won goodies....I saw some names that sure deserved treats from the stamping elves ( they are a little known splinter group that broke off from the main branch of elves because of a disagrement over there being too many "paint by number sets" and no stamps, inks, and MISTIs). Hugs to all!

Default Hello

Sounds like delicious food was had by all. We went out to eat for the first time ever for Thanksgiving- just too hard for my Mother this year. My parents had their 60th anniversary in May, but decided to celebrate at the holidays so as many of the 7 of us could come. Parents looked really cute:

We had about 22 of us there- 5 of the kids, nieces and nephews and (finally), a Great Nephew.

Did anyone take advantage of any Black Friday sales???

Shelly

Oh. There's laundry? Rats!

Chai Latte here for me, though. That's my fix of choice.

So where are all of you who are having such a bad ice storm?

My daughter-in-law's parents WERE going to come from Oklahoma City...and they got out of the city before it got bad...but got stuck in Kansas somewhere. There was an inch of ice.

Having trouble getting moving this morning too! The crazed pace of preparations followed by the business of having almost 20 people around for a few days and then the weekend with just my own kiddos here, and of course the emotion of it all with our first holiday without my mom has left me feeling quite exhausted. Today I drive my older kids off to fly back home too. I'll get through it, but I really just want to crawl into bed and stay there for a week! Decided I couldn't handle doing the 6 hour driving option which would take the kids all the way to the airport. Instead, I'm driving them to a train and then from there they'll take the subway out to the airport...it means longer travel time for them but helps me out considerably.

Now I'm thinking I need a bit of something in my coffee...like a bottle of vodka or something. lol Too bad I don't like alcohol! Monday in full force!!!!

I'm pretty sure this year of having a three year-old is the longest one of my life! The screaming! Oh the screaming and drama.

Good Morning, everyone! We had a quiet but quite a lovely Thanksgiving here- lots of turkey for DH and I- now I go back to working on Christmas projects- but not before a cup of coffee and some breakfast! My DD arrives on the 11th and I can't wait

I'm baaaccckkkkkk!!!

Catching up on site help emails and getting ready to post the last drawing's BONANZA winners.

But FIRST - how far are you into your holiday leftover recipes??

Last night I made turkey noodle soup and turkey broth for the freezer and tonight I will make turkey pot pies.

What are your favorite ways to use turkey for leftovers? Don't forget to update the recipe thread with your faves!

The turkey noodle soup recipe I used was Martha Stewart's and I'll add it. I either added too many noodles or not enough stock because this morning it's a big container of (delicious) turkey infused noodles with no broth - LOL

No leftovers for us this year. We did the 24 hours in a car (12 there, 12 back) to visit the family Christmas Tree farm. It is great to visit and see family.

We have a tradition every other year the family does a beer tasting contest the day after Thanksgiving. I am not a beer drinker so I enroll in the designated driver group so DH can enjoy.

If I do have leftover Turkey we like to do a pot pie with the turkey and turkey chili. Yum!

I found a dibby dab of green bean casserole and there is a small container of stuffing otherwise everything is long gone here! I knew I was cutting it close with turkey as we had a large group and not too big of a bird so I also cooked a duck and a couple of duck leg quarters as well. The group put a whooping on the meat so I'm pretty sure the leftover turkey didn't even make it past the first day! I cooked the stock right away but didn't have meat to put into the soup so we had duck stock veggie soup instead! I need to get the turkey stock into the freezer!

I get some mac and cheese (like the frozen packaged Amy's Country Cheddar bowl) and add some leftover turkey, potatoes, stuffing, and wild rice. Yummy!

No leftovers here. We never get turkey leftovers so we usually cook our own turkey and freeze a lot of it, but they only had 20+ lb birds and at over $100 we just couldn't do it.

The inexpensive birds were in the 14-16lb range. Funny thing is that the 6lb duck was almost the same cost as the turkey!
